Its really hard to tell anyone which state or area is best for winter living since everyone has thier own idea of what is "ideal". Some people will stay in the general region they are used to/closest to home and some go for the opposite type of climate.

The absolute best plan for newbies is to "meander" around the whole country. You may find several places you will enjoy and not want to spend your whole winter season in one place.

We've spent time in winter in many different states from coast to coast and north to south. We got sick of Florida and the southeast and found we liked the openness and quiet of New Mexico. However we've changed our travel schedule and will be traveling in the spring, summer and fall from now and staying home in the snow in winter.

sowego we might be doing the same thing as you are going to do and stay home this winter in the snow. Wife and myself planning a trip for next fall to go back out West. We always went out west hunting or sightseeing in June or Sept, October until about 6 years ago. We went to Arizona (been to Arizona a few times on the Harley also)and Florida 5 times, kinda getting sick of Florida and going south in the winter. It time in our life that we experience the great rocky mountain that we always enjoyed and loved.

I've found people in places that we have traveled to in the North, West, East, and South that just don't open their arms to outsiders. It has nothing to do with geographic locations or where you are from. It has everything do do with varying personalities all over the Nation. Some people are nice, and some people are not nice. It's always been that way and I don't expect it to change, nor will it stop us from raveling where we want to.

Texas is the best state to winter in by far. Az. gets to many Canadians.

"...don't listen to those who might have been discriminated because they have a pop up or pick up camper"

I certainly know I am reading the Class A forum.

One guy takes a swing at popups and pickup campers, then I read,
"too many Canadians"

Guess I had better leave, the lack of oxygen in these lofty surroundings is making me faint!

(of course, we are all RVers, yeah right!)

Every Canadian that I have met are the friendliest people we have ever met. Fact we have some real close friends that live in Canada. So lets not speak bad about our Canadian friends. Act civilized!
OH! I almost forgot about the OP. Southern California has some real nice places to spend the winter months. The southern deserts are perfect for spending the winter, such as Palm Springs area. Also San Diego area has some nice places.

What makes a whole state "RV friendly" or not?

My experience is that different communities are more or less accepting of snowbirds, and there is certainly some hostility to be noticed in places where the snowbird invasion has been more recent, and has greater impact (e.g. bringing suburban sprawl to what had been a rural community).

But this hostility has little to do with RVing, as the great majority of snowbirds occupy non-movable housing, not RVs.

If you are looking for a place where RV snowbirds are such a large community that locals are so outnumbered that you can ignore them, whatever their feelings or attitudes, you might look at the Rio Grande Valley or Yuma.
