In the past my wife and I have crossed into Mexico at San Luis or Algodones on the California & Arizona border for eye glasses and dental work.

Is it still safe to do visit these places, or are they now also involved in drug violence?

Thank's!

There is no "safe" answer to your question. Even if you find out that there hasn't been any problems up until now, and there are no "known" activities in the area that suggest the possibility of violence, the day that you cross the border may be the one day it all breaks loose just where you happen to be.

We've been to Mexico many times, as far south as the Yucatan, but will not go again, even just across the border, until major changes are in place for long enough to rebuild our confidence in the safety of making the trip.

There are also places in the US that we avoid for similar reasons. We spent 6 winters in Arizona (both Phoenix and Tucson primarily with some time in the Yuma area), but won't be doing that again either. There are also areas in most big cities that we avoid, especially in LA and New York.

It's all up to you.

Used to go across at Algodones couple of times a year when going from SDiego to Dallas. Not going to Mex anymore until it changes. I understand that Border crossings into Tijuana is down to about 50 or so a day now!! NO problem getting back into US !! Be sure take your passport and a copy of your will with you!

Beave,
I think you would get a much better answer if you asked on the RVing in Mexico and South America discussion area. The folks who post there should be "in the know".

We will be going to San Felipe next month. We do avoid the big cities and don't travel at night. I'm not sure where we will be crossing the border, probably Tecate, Mexicali, or San Luis.
We have spent the last 6 winters there and have not been exposed to any violence. Not to say it can't happen. In my opinion life is too short stay home and hide my head under a pillow.

I would say Algodones is safe. I'm assuming you're parking in the lot and walking across the border. The place is guarded like the Bastille. I can't imagine anyone trying something in Algodones. Just MHO, of course, but based on my observations.

Algodones in years past has been very safe for the walk across traffic. I assume the same is true for the drive across also.
Obviously that can change in a heartbeat. We plan on going across this coming winter again but of course we will listen to the locals in Yuma before actually making the crossing. We only walk across. We only go there for prescriptions, dental and eyeglasses. Thats really the only reason to cross other than that tacky lantern or painted satellite dish

I have also traveled yearly to Algodones. The first few hundred yards across the border I think are Algodones life blood. I would think that if someone tried to hassle the tourists the locals would protect their lively hoods by trying to discourage any negative activity against tourists, which are their bread and butter income.

We will be going back to Algodones in the near future. DW is in the middle of major implant work and we will finish her program. She received an email from her dentist explaining how safe it was and why. The town absolutely depends on U.S. and Canadian citizens crossing for dental work and pharmaceuticals. There have been no reports of any problems in this town. We feel comfortable going across.
