What the op states is true. I have a B5.9 and had the fan replaced because I lost a blade (another story) by a competent (I thought) shop. Same symptoms, I finally called freightliner and spoke to one of the engineers who helped design my particular chassis. He told me the "concave" side of the fan blade should face the radiator. He says it is a common mistake made by technicians since the fan will mount either way. Had the fan turned around, the engine started cooling as it should and all is well and has been for four years.

Thank you Homer+2
I was beginning to doubt my own information.
Yes you are right, The fan "Concave" side facing the RAD is odd looking to the avg guy / mechanic I guess.

My son-in Law has returned from BC towing his Boat and with the Fan in this state - no overheating!! temp never went above 210F even on hills.

For those that wonder about reversing the flow of an electric fan, you may want to read these instructions that are given with this fan:
Summit Radiator fan, reversible

No one is talking about reversing the direction of the fan?? so not sure why your bringing up the electric fan situatiion?? as it has NOTHING to do with discussion at hand.

A fan installed backwards would suffer improper(poor) air flow for sure thats why they have a front(rad) and (rear) towards engine
I suspect if your fan was backwards then you have found your overheating problem when pulling hills or +75 temps
