One man was killed in a bear attack early Wednesday morning at Soda Butte Campground a mile east of here. Two other campers in separate campsites in the 10-acre campground also were injured. It is unclear if they were attacked by a black bear or a grizzly or if more than one bear was involved.
The Park County Coroner’s Office has not released the name of the fatally injured man, pending..... (more)

Possibly. They did lock their food. No way to tell if they had 'smelly' tents (cooking upwind of their tents) or smelly clothes (you're not supposed to sleep with the clothes you sat around and cooked in).
You really have to follow some strict guidelines to tent camp in bear areas. And, it could also be bears who simply are not afraid of people or campfires any longer, and know there is food.
The jury is out about 'playing dead'. A lot of rangers will tell you to run from a griz --- play dead for a black/brown bear (yes, I can spot the difference right away).

I am not sure I could tell what kind of bear it was at 1am and being woke from a sound sleep, or if I could play dead while it was chewing on my arm… I would guess the teen that beat the bear on the head did the right thing, because it worked…
Anyway the risk of my being attacked while sleeping in a tent in bear country is very low now…
If you are going to cook and eat at the campsite, and most do, it would be difficult to prevent all smells and wind changes that could attract them… being wild the bears don’t always follow the rules either…

I saw on the tv last night that Jack Hannah from the Columbus Zoo was up there as well somewhere and fought off a bear with pepper spray...

Stories like this make me glad for my hard sided toy hauler.
It can be hard for people to remember that when they leave the city that they're no longer at the top of the food chain.
JJBIRISH, Any "Ranger" who tells you to run from a Griz should be *fired*. Unless you can cover a football field in 6 seconds you CANNOT outrun a Grizzly.

Makes me think it was a black. I can't imagine a grizzly being punched into discouragement by even Joe Louis.

Nor can the horse you rode in on.

So...do we need to take extreme bear precautions in a hard side RV. Cooking smells, food in the unit etc?

We passed that campground on Sunday while on vacation in Yellowstone. We commented at the time that people who camp in tents in the park are CRAZY. It's bear country....not people country!
