Well stated bigdaddogg1!
You know the purist at work used to constantly harrass me about going out in my trailer. That's not camping they said!
How mmany nights did you go out last year in your tent I asked? Normal answer was, "we were busy and didn't go last year, but the year before we went to the lake for a weekend", OK I say so in two years you've been out for two or three nights, in two years I've been out for about 100 nights.
Their kids don't talk to them now that their all grown up. My kids are weird! 20 and 27 year olds. Still go CAMPING with us. The 27 year old has a husband now and a tent. She is "forcing" him to like camping. It helps that we have the trailer to set the tent next to for him!
Went to Arizona near Sedona in May. Didn't ask my son if he wanted to go because he goes to college and works 20 hours a week. (at our church). About two days before we left he says with hurt feelings, "you know dad, you never asked me if I wanted to go"!
Son, could you have gone for two weeks, with school and work? No he says. I said I didn't think so, we'll get you next time. And YES there has already been a NEXT time!
Anyways all that to say, YES we DO go camping!!

Cooked my food over a small fire, bathed in a "creek" or when it rained, brushed my teeth out of a canteen cup, and hiked for miles through the the "woods". Never once did I consider myself "camping."
Now I do my camping in a 28 foot 5th wheel. To me camping is being outdoors enjoying nature, sitting around a campfire with like-minded individuals having an adult beverage and telling lies to each other. Eating food cooked either over the campfire or on a grill and being able to fart when I'm finished!
Lighten up everyone...this thread sounds pretty snobby to me. If you're out having a great time with old and new friends, who cares what you're sleeping in or where you're going to the bathroom.
Camping is a state of mind, not a defined activity.
Just my two cents....apologies to anyone who feels offended. Just don't stop by my campfire for a drink....LOL

I'm with you Brian!!! Now that I'm retired, I'm out CAMPING about 6 months of the year. My married kids (35 & 36) still go camping with me, and they bring their kids too! Have to find a big enough spot for the 5er and the tents though...LOL
Matter of fact, I took my grandkids (all 5 of them) camping for a week in June. Yes, we stayed at a family-friendly resort in Myrtle Beach (just a short walk to the beach) that had a pool, game room, restaurant, ice cream parlor and all the other amenities. But if they can make s'mores over the campfire, try to tell them we're NOT camping!

I looked up "camp" at http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/camp. It said:
"...any temporary structure, as a tent or cabin, used on an outing or vacation."
Now, a cabin seems to me not to be a temporary structure, but rather, a structure that is used temporarily. Likewise, an RV of whatever description is (I hope) not a temporary structure, but most of us use them as temporary lodging.
I conclude that going off in an RV for a weekend or a couple of weeks' vacation is "camping." Full time living in an RV, not so much. JMHO.
(DW and I are currently "living" in the MH while waiting for our new stix & brix to be completed. We DO NOT consider this to be camping. Once the s & b is complete, we will move in and then go "camping" in the MH the following weekend.)

Guess that means, we are "camping" 24/7 year round.
We live in a Campgrounds, have been now for almost 17 years.
Never get tired of it, just enjoy some places more than others. Never get enough of Organ Pipe National Park or The Grand Canyon and Yosemite or Yellowstone. Visit them at least twice a year, some years four or more times. Enjoyed fishing in all of them as well as other Campgrounds enroute. Like the 35lb Salmon caught on the Klamouth River.
Taking thousands of pictures per year. It has always surprised me at how much people spend on vacations, then bring so few pictures home. Used to take at least 10 rolls of 36 exposure film. Now with a Nikon digital, average over 5000 of keepers per year. When the weather is Bad, we can sit and watch a slide show of places we were. Things we could do when Backpacking into the Rockies or Sierra's until 70 years. Now at 80+ my backpacking days are over, but no one can take the memories, as we have all those pictures.

Since we rarely sit outside enjoying a big fire and never cook on one, I think we are rver's.

So by some of the definition the early settlers were RV'ing since they had a covered wagon to travel in? They call it Camping World not RV'ing World.

For us it was a progression - I started out hiking and my tent was a rope and sheet of plastic, lol.
DH & I started out with tents, upgraded to a popup and then upgraded to an tiny TT and this year we upgraded to a very nice TT.
To me it don't matter what you are in - tent, cabin, camper... it's just getting away from it all to an environment you enjoy. Having some fun with family and/or friends.
When my kids were small I would make them a big tent in the living room and they would camp there over night. They had so much fun. They loved their little camp outs.
Camping is what you make of it.
