Hi, we had a 99 HR Endeavour 34cg for 12 years, bought new in 98.

You need to remove the upper inverted cap on the roof toilet vent, by just breaking the little upright legs that keep it on, they became brittle over time, a few snapped when bumped when washing the roof.

You do not have to remove the caulk to get to the open pipe. I replaced the inverted caps on ours, and just slipped on new ones that I bought at the RV store, no need to break the seal at the roof surface.

The replacement inverted caps had a metal type spring which slides into the vent pipe itself with jagged edging to hold it it place.

Doing it this way does not interfere with the vent/roof seal, a great quick fix. Eugene.

Great point! I can always remove the legs later, I'll try this tonight, thanks!

Um, really seems to me to be something blocking or wrong with the vent. I'd climb up on the roof, remove that crappy rounded cover that came with it and grab onto the vent pipe, gray and black, and tug on them. They should be glued in place. If one of them moves...there's the problem. If neither moves, THEN put the water hose in the black & gray tank vents and turn it on low.

You could also get a long 1/2" dowel or something similar, flush the black tank, add water and a bottle of red dye, then drop the dowel down there and see if it's red on the end when you pull it up again...proof that it's not a 'forgotten' vent hole.

Leave the old vent covers off and replace with simple plastic 'T's available from Home Depot. In my case, I had the odors but usually when I drove. Adding the 'T' to the roof vents solved it. Your problem seems a little more complex.

Now we're cooking with gas! Great ideas thanks guys!

With most coaches you don't have to crawl under them to see the floor under the toilet and the top of the black tank. All side panels on your coach that are not doors can usually be openned by removing a couple of screws that hold the doors in place with small brackets. A call to your coach manufacturer will confirm where the tanks are located on your rig and which panel to remove to easily access that area.

good luck...hope you find the problem.

Sending an email to them now, I know which basement compartment to look at as well. Thanks.

It could be a dried out gasket between the toilet and the floor.

Had a similar ongoing odor problem that seemed incurable. We had the flooring replaced, which involved re and re of the toilet including of course a new floor gasket. 3000 miles later and still no smell.

When I look at the toilet I didn't see how it was mounted. Since I have more time tonight I'm going to take a good hard look at everything.

It's a ceramic toilet, do they use wax gaskets like in a home?

NO, do not use a wax gasket, they use a rubber seal.

With all of the responses here, never let it be said that we don't know $h!+.

Great ideas, thanks, will use the hose method when I get the vent cap off. I would prefer not to use any chemicals if possible so hopefully this all works and we can just enjoy the RV soon.

Check your vent first if OK, then use chemicals! Modern living through chemistry.

Hi
I've gone through the same thing. Everybody is right. Figure out your preferred sloshing, digesting, rinsing cleaning method and do it regularly. I tested my vents with a garden hose and later with a smoke machine and they worked, kind of so I put in an electric vent. It helped, sort of. I checked all the little stuff kine the toilet filler trap and the various seals. In my case it was all fine to begin with but it still needs to be done as maintenance so do it. After a while you learn how to deal with your particular setup and it gets better but in the end there was one particular cause that I could not do much about. The plastic that the toilet is made of is not truly odor proof. The bowl will smell. So will the outer section of the bowl because the crud splashes up between the inner and outer sections. I need a porcelain throne.

Just think of it as a boat except that it is the top that needs to be waterproof.

Hey KlipschHead281, any resolution to your problem? I'm having a similar problem with my trailer and I'm interested to know if you worked it out.

I learned early on in my RVing life .. after a finial " dump" on the way home. I stop at the gas station... pick up a bag of ice... put that into the black tank with a squirt of dish soap (I like dawn) and then head on home... The action of the ice , slooshing about in the black tank, + the dish soap = a nice clean black tank

If you're depending on the LED's to tell you how full your tank is, don't be, as another one of those could light up at any time. From what you've said, my first guess would be that the vent pipe is down into the tank too far and maybe all the way to the bottom, so as soon as it fills above the pipe, you lose the vent and this odor only has one place to go.
