I just stayed in a CG that charged $1 a foot over 30 feet.

In California having a larger rig, will definatly limit your options, in state, and federal campgrounds. Since our favorite places to camp, are the state and federal campgrounds, we choose a 25' fifth wheel.

But even 25' will exclude you from most state parks in California. (Do they give you a special exception since you're towing a fifth wheel?)

Not true as I fit in the parks restriced to 24'. That leaves a small handfull I would not fit in. No, nobody gets special exemptions. However I have yet to see anyone check either. Others may have different experiences.

This thread brings up a post in a previous running thread.

I would assume that when one say fulltime, they intend to live it in 24 hrs a day, 7 days a week, 365 days ayear. Under that assumption, are you going to stay ONLY in state parks ? And if so, can you stay there for weeks on end? Are you going to visit the "granduer" of America and are the state parks everywhere? Are you going to "satisfy" yourself with a 30 fter, as compared to a 40 fter? Is the time you are going to spend in that 30 fter as enjoyable or entertaining and "liveable" as that 39 fter?

Basically , are you really that sure that a 30 fter that you can "camp" in the state parks gonna make you happy and you can enjoy the sacrifice of that extra 9-10 ft , so you can stay at a state park?

If it came down to not staying at state parks or having a 40 fter to live in "fulltime", I believe I would say goodbye state parks, rather than my extra 9-10 ft of "living"space and the atmosphere and commradarie of the private parks over the uncontrolled madness of a state park.

While state park living my apeal to you for a while , I do believe you will end up in a apt long before you expected to, if give only a 30fter and state parks to live in.

In all my years of fulltiming, I have never had to pay for extra feet of my living quarters. Some parks I could not get into, but so what, there aint like there is a shortagge of parks out here. I would rather be restricked to private parks, than be limited on my personal space to live in. Whats to miss if you cant stay in 100% of the state parks? Bad neighbors, loose dogs, drunks, kids running everywhere and peeeing in the pool water, broken windows, louds cars, domestic fights, etc, etc, etc,

I guarantee this post to spark more interest now.

This brings up another point: Do the campgrounds actually check? If a campground only allows a 31' and I roll in a 33', is it usually a problem?

Special thanks to all of you who have helped answer my questions. I really appreciate it!

I know the cgs (state and county) we worked in CA did not check. If you could get there and fit, it was OK.

May I throw a size question into this thread? We're planning to fulltime soon and are looking at motorhomes. We also want to be able to fit into state and national park campgrounds so we've been looking in the 30 to 35 foot range. Will we be able to fit in most parks with that size? I thought I read somewhere that anything under 35' is okay for most National Parks.

I hope it's ok to ask this here. I don't won't to hijack your thread.

My wife, my 65 pound mutt, and I are fulltiming in a 23' travel trailer after deciding to downsize from a 28 footer. We find ourselves much happier with the smaller trailer, and it has more space than what we need to be honest. I would certainly say we're in the minority, but for us having a small, easily maneuverable lightweight and energy efficient home is a higher priority than space.

You may be in the minority with liking the smaller trailer but I totally get it. We have a Class B now and while I have no intention of fulltiming in it, I will miss it terribly. We have traveled cross-country and back 3 times in the past 3 years and taken many, many multi-state trips and we still love it. It is going to break my heart to give up my B.

We've gone back and forth on the livability-vs-mobility/flexibility issue and, like you, we feel that the latter is a higher priority for us at this stage. We don't plan to stay in State Parks and National Parks all the time but I would hate not to be able to stay in some of these great places, at least while we're starting out. Who knows what we'll want in a few years-maybe bigger, maybe a 5th wheel in a permanent site and a B for travel, maybe a house in a part of the country we discover in our travels. We're budgeting for an upgrade once we get out on the road and learn more about what works for us. That to me is the beauty of the fulltime lifestyle-there are so many different ways to do it. One size doesn't necessarily fit all.

Do you know if most National Parks have a 35' limit for motorhomes? I seem to recall reading that some place but I don't know where. I really like some of the 30' motorhomes we've looked at but we'll probably go a bit bigger. We're thinking 34' might be a good cut-off point for our search.

My 25' fifth wheel is fantastic for short burst living. I love it's convenience, and compact size, perfect for state park visits. Camping and traveling with it is fun and exciting!

That said, I would hate it fast, if I were full timing in it.
