Taking it in this monday to have it removed. hope we don't have trouble getting a new cooling coil. Thanks for all the replies. Larry

We got ours from David Force out of Memphis. Works well installed.

Not sure about the smell since my failure was not from a leak, but just had the cooling unit replaced a few days ago at RV and Camper refrigeration shop just a shout distance from Charlotte, NC and it works better than ever so far. They rebuild the units there. They also added two more fans and a lot of insulation. They seemed very professional and are a small shop. They also explained that I should only make ice at night when it is cooler since the ice maker produces heat. So far all it great.

Well, hopefully your repair is going better than mine. My RV has been at the service center going on 3 weeks now. 1st it was the company that makes the coolant pack had none in stock and had to build me one, well then they didn't get it made before they closed shop for 1 week for vacation. Finally it arrived via freight truck to my repair shop on Wed. When they went to unload the unit off the truck someone had stuck one of the prongs of the forklift straight through the box, through my coolant pack. Naturally noneone knows who did that. Well now I'm waiting for the second delivery, not sure if they have to build me another one or not. Cancelled 2 planned trips already, I am not a happy camper (no pun intended).

I had the same problem with mine and the ammonia odor was gone in a couple hours after the cooling coil was replaced.

Your nose is very sensitive to ammonia, so it only takes a few ppm to make you smell it. And Ammonia is very bad stuff to breathe so GET OUT and STAY OUT!!!

The shop will have respirators to wear while they work on it. But you have a problem if you need to drive it there. Also, air/ammonia mixtures are flammable and explosive so get the coach power off and get the windows open to air it out if you can.

I remember an incident where we had an ammonia leak inside a cold storage which was full of product that would warm up and spoil before we could get the place aired out. Our solution? Fire hoses with fog nozzles. The water droplets absorbed the ammonia and froze solid on the way down, where we swept it up and took it outside. Took a while, but we saved about $5 million of product, so it was worthwhile. In you case, if you have a sewer connection, turn on the shower and let it run, and let the sinks run slowly (you don't want to add a flood to your misery) and open the tank valves. It will clear a lot of the ammonia up without a lot of work.

We had the same situation in our previous MH and elected to replace the cooling unit. The ammonia odor was virtually gone when the defective cooling unit was removed. Replacing the unit only took an hour or so and was a lot more comfortable to the wallet.
Good luck with whatever decision you make.

Happy RV'ing!!

May be just as cheap to order a new lock set so you can do it yourself?

Wow daddydaniel that is a string of bad luck. Kind of glad we did our own replacement but it was not any faster with me paying with it so much but we are having fun.

Instead of leaving the motorhome at the dealer you could put a cooler with ice in it and enjoyed camping. In 38 years of RVing I have never left a RV at a dealer. I tell them to call me when they get the parts and I will come and wait for it to be fixed.

When my Dometic NDR1062 sprang a leak last year I ordered a coolant unit from an Amish place that has been mentioned on rv.net. It arrived three days later and I replaced it myself. Total cost was $325.
