we just had a failure with our fridge. Lost all referigerent. really bad oder of amonia. I am talking about nose bleeding eye crying can't breath environment. The facility says the warranty will replace the coolimg coil but not the complete unit. I have had vegitables that left oders before but I can't imagine ever getting rid of this odor. Will it ever go away??? when I open the door it just knocks you down. Have any of you had a replacement of this sort and was satisfied with the results of the odor?? Thanks Larry

Two things: first, we left our RV at a service shop for a week one time, and when we came back, they had turned off the frig which was full of "stuff" and stunk to high heaven. DW spent some time cleaning the frig and it turned out nice and didn't smell. Second, our cooling unit failed also and was replaced a couple of years ago. My personal impression is that it works better than ever now. JMHO.

I am having the exact same problem right now. My motorhome is in the shop waiting to have the coolant pack replaced. The ammonia smell was horrible when the refrig. went out. I'll let you know how mine turns out as well. My problem is that my motorhome has been in the shop for about 2 weeks and they can't get me a coolant pack. The company that makes them was out of stock and had to "make" one for my unit. It was supposed to be delivered Wed, however it is still not in. Not sure how this will turn out but I am surely missing out on come RVing while I wait.

The ammonia smell usually disperses pretty quickly once the source is gone. A good airing out should take care of it.

Thanks for the replies ours is a Norcold 4 door. never been turned off since we had it except for mayby a transition between shore power and travaling.. They would replace the complete unit if destroyed ( as if a fire) but only the cooling unit otherwise. I have no problem with this if this works. I have my concerns. The odor is pretty bad and I can't imagine it ever going away. Which is why I am asking if any of you had this and it went away. Thanks Larry

The smell left with the leaking cooling unit the day we packed the cooling unit out of the MH. Like Larry ours cools better with the replacement than before. On a test with the frig empty we got -8/21 readings on the upper/lower compartments with the new cooling unit and -2/22 loaded with four gallons of water.

Some testing results with reman. Pines RV Amish cooling unit.

Thanks all they offerd a complete replacement at an increased price of course. I just want to be sure this coil replacement will be OK. A whole lot of money either way I just don't want the odor after all is done. I can't believe the strength of this stuff.Larry

A few folks we've known had their ammonia leak out, both bought rebuilt units and installed them themselves. They even had a 2 year warranty and are still going strong.

Use activated charcoal from a pet shop in shallow pans set around where the smell is the strongest. This will absorb the ammonia smell completely after a few days. Change the pans and replace the Activated Carbon every few days. It will also work inside the refer to get rid of bad odors. Arm and Hammer baking soda is also an odor absorbtion media and can be added to warm water and used to wipe surfaces free of odors!

I have had them leak, (we could not enter the motor home for 2 hours) as stated, once the source was removed, the odor in my experience was gone.
