the Northwestern, in addition to crab season, also fishes cod during that season. They have said that the boat is working almost year round. I think this would be the case of all the boats. If they are not fishing, they are not making money.

Quote: Late Wednesday, Russ Herriott, the Business Partner and Manager to Capt Phil Harris and Sons Josh and Jake told me exclusively that owner Cornelia Marie has worked out a deal by which she will be the majority owner of the boat, and the boys minority owners. Bottom line is this: the Cornelia Marie will be back out for next season with Jake and Josh continuing the fishing legacy.

we liked phil on the show but after last weeks episode where they did a synopsis of his life i sure wouldn't want him as a role model for my kid or any other youngster. they could have played down all the drinking, drugs and other undesirables. sounded like his life was nothing but drugs, booze, and a carefree attitude who just happen to have a job that could support it all. not much of a fatherly image. I don't know... he certainly loved his boys; and the fact that they can step up and continue the legacy says he must have done a few things right??
One thing I noticed during that episode that confirmed my suspicions - that Phil was a Red Bull drinker. I wonder if his Doctors were aware of that, after the first scare with blood clots? I've been reading about an anecdotal connection between the drink and blood clots:

But it's not like the entire "crab-fishing Captain lifestyle" is healthy...

to a point i agree, MAYBE. who knows what their relationship really was before the show. and once the show started the idea of fame and money is tempting for any kid to join in whereas otherwise may have never joined the crew. and lets remember that the one son did become a addict which is typical when a parent is or was one and the children are raised in that type of environment.
wonder how many times also he may have been piloting the ship while under the influence. again JMO and experience's from working in that field for many years.

Red Bull wasn't the reason he had a stroke--but it probably wasn't the best thing for him to be drinking. Cigarette smoking was most likely the primary culprit.
Phil must have had a death wish to continue smoking after his episode with the blood clots--as the doctors would have told him to stop smoking immediately. Smoking can cause high blood pressure, and that leads to strokes.
I had a cardiac scare about 2 months ago that put me in the hospital for about 4 days. The doctor told me to stay away from alcohol for the next 6 months. My 30+ year cocktail before dinner routine is put on hold for the time being. I've had to make some diet changes as well.
Phil and I are only about a month apart in age (53). I don't have a death wish, so I'm doing what the doctor told me so I can live for a while longer.

Phil was a wonderful character. Full of life and lived it one day at a time with absolutely no thought about tomorrow. I think the only place he felt in control was the sea. He was captain of the ship and totally confident about his fishing ability. When he was on shore, he was just another displaced lost soul and seemed to seek out thrills with so many unhealthy habits. I think Jonathan of the Time Bandit is the closes character to Phil. He also seems to live a day at a time.
Yes, there is no question Phil loved his two boys. But a good father? No way. He was rarely around them until they were young adults. And just look at the example he set. Both of the kids smoke and the young one has a drug problem. Wonder where they learned that? I doubt either will ever be more than deck hands.
If loving your kids were all it took to be considered a good father, then Ma Baker was a good mother. I will miss Phil. He was my favorite character followed by Jonathan. Maybe I like to view the life these types of characters lead.

I'm still astounded at the juxtaposition of the wild adventurous life Phil led, and the meticulous detail he put into the amazing bird houses he built.
