coffeebreak, there are TONS of people, (city and school bus drivers, soccer moms, taxi drivers, people driving cars), all under the influence of something. Liquor, pot, oxicotin (?), vicadin, you name it. Oprah has done some shows, but news and other shows have done exposes also. There's a whole lotta room for Jake to pilot that boat on the ocean than regular folk in their regular lives. NOT MHO .... fact.

"Ocean Room" doesn't give Jake any more latitude for mistakes than anyone else; nor does it make him impervious to poor judgement caused by chemicals or inexperience.

He's responsible for a $100,000+ boat and equipment, not to mention the lives of the crew members.

If he buries the bow in an unanticipated storm, the investment in the boat and the lives of the crew, plus his own, are at stake and survival may depend on upon a clear head; and in his case, more so because of his inexperience.

I'm still astounded at the juxtaposition of the wild adventurous life Phil led, and the meticulous detail he put into the amazing bird houses he built.

On the episode honoring Phil they showed a clip where he corrected someone that they are bird feeders, not bird houses.

Whatever they are, they are awesome! I can't imagine the time and patience that went into one of those.

Ok, I'll take the correction on that easily. Just looking at it should have clued me in.

True ... but those storms and waves are the dramatic and not the norm. What kind of show would Discovery have if they showed calm waters and sunny skies all the time? Yes ... Jake is a danger, on the water or on land, ... my point being ... he is less of a danger on the water EVEN with a several million dollar boat and equipment and all the crew. There are so many on drugs on the roads driving your children or sharing the roads with your kids and loved ones. It's appalling.

p.s. Jake doesn't captain the boat. I haven't seen him at the wheel at all. It's Josh who got time in the Captain's Chair.

WOW! I hope after I die, people do not tear apart my life, dissecting it with such judgment! I (unfortunately) have made some mistakes along the way too!

I choose to listen to what the people who actually knew him had to say - he loved life and loved (most) people. End of story!

Regardless of what anyone thinks about the show or about Phil's lifestyle or whether things were staged, Phil was my favorite of the captains and his death brought tears to my eyes and sobs to my chest.... and I'm man enough to admit it.
