Rule #1: Never buy fuel, whether it be gas or diesel, when the storage tanks are being filled or right after for that matter. All of the sediment has been stirred up so it can clog your fuel lines and filters. Quite a few of the station filters are not maintained regularly. The water, if there is any, will not be floating on top as it usually is but mixed in. If I see a tanker at a station I keep on driving. First thing my daddy taught me. Well, not the first thing but close enough.

This is what I do. If I see a tanker delivering I drive by.

Top Tier Fuel is just another marketing 'angle'. I think only five companies actually recognise it, BMW, VW/Audi, GM, Honda & Toyota.
The validity of the science is disputed. But go ahead, if it makes you feel better, then go for it!

Water is heaver then gas. Water will not be on top of gas. Gasoline will float on top of water This is why some stations will "FLOAT" there tanks. They will stick there tank to see how low the gas level is. They know what level the pump pick up is. It is always a few inches above the bottom so it won't pick up the water on the bottom of the tank. So they put water in the tank to "FLOAT" the gas up so they can sell more gas before they reorder. When the gas pumps stop delivering gas there is still gas in the tank. It just dropped below the pick up tube. Also when they stick the tanks they put a green paste on the bottom of the stick that will turn red when it touches water.

After this is done they have to call the service company to come and pump out the water. I could never see the logic in this but they did and still do it. I used to work for one of those service company's and I also drove gasoline tankers. Been there done that.

A new class of fuel called TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline is appearing at retail stations of some fuel marketers. This gasoline meets detergency standards developed by six automotive companies. All vehicles will benefit from using TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline over gasoline containing the "Lowest Additive Concentration"

Just a fancy new marketing word that fits right in with= Duluxe,Hightest,Gold,Supreme, etc. Some reading from Another forum.

I thought as much! I did find the list of gas companies that 'qualify' for this 'honour' and was surprised to see 'Quicktrip' listed first. I wasn't totally familiar with this name, but thought I had seen it as a small discount gas station.
Who would have thought that they appear to be the originator of this. Good find Jambo!

Years ago, Shell advertised their gas as having "TCP" in it. Turns out that "TCP" stood for Tri-Cresyl Phosphate. what is that? Why, TCP is a Phosphate-based detergent!
When the refinery got a call for Shell gasoline, the mixing controller simply opened a valve, and added a little extra detergent to the mix (I learned this in the mixing room of a Texaco refinery way back when). VOILA, Shell gas!
I guess that would mean that the old Shell gas would now be a "Top Tier" fuel; After all, it had an extra shot of Phosphate detergent. Of course, it also had a lot of Tetra-Ethyl Lead, but what the heck.
The amount of detergent in the gasoline has nothing to do with the contaminants that may be in the gas station tank.

This won't help. all brands have the same problem. Gas is lighter than water. The bottom of the pipe the gas is drawn thru on fillup is several feet from the bottom of the tank (don't know the exact distance). This is done because you always have moisture in the tank. because water is heavier it will settle to the bottom. When the tanker fills the tank everything is stirred up. The tanks are periodically inspected and any excess water is removed. Properly maintained the bottom of the pipe will always be above the water.

Detergent will not remove the water.

Also ethenol is alcohol and alcohol attracts moisture.

I worked for Amoco years ago in the G.O. Gas is gas. Regular is regular, premium is premium, A lot of gas, unless you are close to a refinery, is transported by pipeline. The difference is the additives added at the terminal. You could have tankers from several brands loading up from the same spigot. The additives are added as the tanker is loaded. At least that is what happened back then and I am talking a lot of years ago.

We noticed a drop in sales once. At the time we were adding an additve in the winter to prevent carburator freeze up. It waa thick liguid until it was added to the gas. Well the terminal operator spread the word not to use our gas because the additive would gum things up.
