Maybe some golf carts.. but they're usually 36v.

The golf cart manufactures began using six 8v batteries when then went from 36 to 48v. and what a mistake that was. I mean nobody uses these things for anything else and it's especially a pain when installing 12v accessories on your cart. Since then, they woke up to what everyone else already knew and even though the carts are still 48v, the newer ones use four 12v batteries in series.
Now these super 12's should be good for RV use and will be available at discount prices once Sam's and the other chains begin to stock them. Right now, they cost a small fortune from Trojan and some of the others.

I have an acquaintance who bought a set of Costco GC batteries. He is a ham operator, and draws a lot of current. The Costco batteries had too much voltage drop. He returned them, and replaced them with Trojans, which had way less drop.

You may infer what you wish from that, but it would not be a stretch to say that the extra current ability could translate into longer life.

Whether the high price balances out that hoped-for extra life is what you have to figure.

Hi Gang,
OP here, I've read all the posts and at the present time, it looks like I might end up with Costco 6Vrs. I do have a question though, I was there at Costco yesterday looking at them ($75.99 ea.) and We (the salesman and I) could not find ANYWHERE, the output in Ampere Hours. It said cranking time in "100" minutes only. But no Ampere Hour rating at all. Does anyone know (with proof) of what the ampere hour rating of those Costco units are?

I do have one more question, since at least two of you have stated that many of the 6V batts are actually the same battery with just different stickers on them, How do you account for the different "COLOR" of the Trojans then any other 6V Golf Cart battery out there? I can see sticker differences but, the color of a battery would not be easily stuck on to just any battery. Just wondering.

From 1989 thru 2003, I worked for a battery company that was eventually bought out by Exide. We sold most of the raw materials to the Trojan factory in Atlanta and bought their 6v gc batteries. We would bring them back to our distribution center, put our stickers on them, then deliver them to WalMart, Sams, Batteries Plus, Napa, and several different small distributers, all with their own proprietary stickers. All of them were the same batteries that Trojan sold themselves.

You are not the 1st I have heard say this. I stand by my earlier comment, I will NOT pay a 80-100% premium for the Trojan name on the battery. Thank you alageezer.

I've been reading all the responses on this thread and have spoken about this subject with both my Parts and Service managers.

The concensus is that there just isn't a whole lot of difference between 6 volt, deep-cycle, wet cell batteries. There are only a few domestic manufacturers anyway that make ALL the batteries for all the private labels.

When our battery dealer (Dekka) delivers the batteries we put into coaches and on the shelf, he applies the brand sticker before they leave the truck. He carries several brand stickers with him and applies them according to his customer's requirements.

Generally speaking the more expensive tier of battery the more lead goes into them during manufacture.

Finally, in all their experience, my managers suggest that the greatest causes for premature battery death is the lack of regular maintanence and secondarily an improperly adjusted charger.

I will say this about the 6 volt gulf cart batteries; I bought 2 for my previous motorhome ten years ago and only replaced one during that time; and I do a lot of boondocking camping.

I remember, perhaps 9 or 10 years ago, that Costco sold maroon batteries under their name that looked exactly like Trojans, right down to the lifting brackets, caps, etc. The similarity was much more than color. But cheaper.

I think you'll find that true deep cycle batteries are not rated as such, hence no CCA or amp hour caps are stated.
Don't know about this thing of one manufacture for most all batteries, but I guess Trojan could refuse to give away their signature color when manufacturing for someone else.
