Particularly when it comes to locally grown produce, we find the major national stores to be very poor. We live in the Skagit Valley of Washington which has the most prolific agricultural produce system anywhere. In season, local farms grow potatoes, strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, loganberries, tayberries, blackberries, tomatoes, carrots, peas, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower. Just over the Cascade range, they grow apples, pears, etc.

Who picks the crops ?

Ross Perot, I think it was, said there was I giant sucking sound as jobs moved south to mexico, if I recall correctly. The winds have shifted to the orient. We keep losing so many jobs, it's going to be really bad here, really bad.

FWIW I can say that part of the problem of jobs leaving the USA are the cost of staying in business here and some of the regulations. We had a small manufacturing company in So.Cal. We made top quality solid doors for hotels and hi-end homes all across the country. We were growing in the early 2000's, but so were the regulations and costs in CA. Workers comp doubled one year and again in the next. In any interaction with government agencies you were treated as guilty or criminal because you were an employer. I won't go into details here but businesses were the bad guys. The end result of all this over the years was increased cost of doing business.

Well in 2004 we moved the factory to Nevada as they are much much more business friendly. They actually want factorys and other business here. So they don't enact draconian legislation to smother business. They are fair! Here's an example of the cost savings with the same employees and business level: Our workers comp policy cost $11,000 per MONTH less than in CA, Electricity cost 40% less (that meant $2,000/month less) and the cost of the building saved us another $10,000 per month. We had less red tape to deal with etc which saved us hundreds of manhours per year of management time.

That move allowed us to stay in business and compete for quite a while with other US manufacturers. But then the imports from Indonesia, China and Viet Nam started pouring in. I could have bought a completed product from any of these countries for less than part of the cost of the raw material need to make them here! Our product was far superior and would last forever, but people wanted cheap, not good! BTW, all the components/raw materials we bought were from other US manufacturers. Unfortunately with the severe down turn in construction we had to close the company earlier this year. The last big contract we were going to get went to an importer!

I have appreciated hearing from all those that try to buy USA made products, it really does help. Keep pressure up on your legislators to keep them from implementing more laws in your state or our Nation that will only drive more companies out of business or to job out their manufacturing off shore.

Live Long and Prosper.

I want to know what is so bad about saying "Buy American Made" and "Buy Union Made"?

I would also like to know.

Nothing bad about it at all.We just have to be prepared to pay more
and hope to get better quality.
Well it seems that one of the powers to be on the forum seems to think it is bad, cause they deleted the guys post and that was all he said. I figured that the person who deleted it was anti American or anti Union. I know that there are lots of Americans here and I also know that there are lots of both active and retired union members here.

Lower teh American wage to that of a Chinese worker. $5.00 per day and where would you get the money for your RV toy?

Y'know, I am getting REALLY sick of the "you drank the Kool-Aide" garbage. It HAS to be one of the stupidest statements ever bandied about by a politically motivated writer!
NOWHERE did I say anything about the capabilities or motivation of the American worker. I have been an American worker, Union and NON-union, for most of my life. I have also been part of first-line management. I have had a militant "Strike this (blankety-blank) place" UNION member in my face demanding to know if I would be willing to work there for $2.50 per hour. He got very upset when I said "Sure I would, if the cost-of-living was the same as it was when the average worker was making $2.50 per hour!" By the way, he was demanding a strike TWO MONTHS BEFORE THE CONTRACT TALKS STARTED! When they had the "strike authorization vote", I voted NO!
You can't tell me the unions haven't demanded more money for the same work, I have been there, as a union member!

We stopped at Cabela's today. Much of the stuff on display was made overseas. Especially shoes and clothing.

You have to remember the actual drinking of the kool-aide. If you remember that you would not call it stupid. And I thought you were retired Navy. When did you find time to do all this other stuff? There are lots of militant folks out there, union and non-union! Sorry you had to put up with one. I put up with them on both sides of the aisle. And we had union guys who were in the companies back pocket working against us union members.

As I get older quality is becoming more important to me than price. I sometimes get disgusted when I can't find a quality piece and refuse to buy ANYTHING.

It saddens me to hear a story like yours, I wish more people shopped like I did.

"No one in the nearby towns wants to lower themselves to "eww" working at McDonald's."

I made a darn good living because I would work in jobs involving sewage. People WILL work in ANY job - if they are paid adequately for it.
