RE: should I use bumper mounted tie downs?

I have been using bumper buttons for rear tiedowns for years and not one single problem.

RE: used camper purchase, checklist/how to for water damage?

Back a few exterior trim screws out and look for rust on them. They should go back in tight. Water damage is usually much worse than you can imagine as water travels and is then locked in. My entire cabover had to be rebuilt because of a leak on one clearance light. Also look for gobs of caulking. Good luck.

RE: Personal Satellite Locator

I've got a SPOT Messenger. My wife requires that I carry one when I am riding my horse by myself (which is most of the time). Good insurance and I also buy an annual MedStar membership for my region to cover a medical helicopter evacuation. If I'm gonna get saved I would hate to get the bill for it.

RE: How tight should I hold down my camper?

From what I have heard on this forum over the years you could probably go down the highway with no tie downs and nothing would happen. I snug mine just a 1/4 of a turn past tight. The truck and bed do flex. I had to rebuild one side of my camper and was shocked at how light weight the backing plate for the tie down hooks is. If there was really any significant lift on the highway the tie downs would simply tear apart. There was also a picture one here of a TC mfr who put something like (10) people on the top of the cab over to prove that you can't tip a TC over very easily.

RE: camper stands.

Build I-Beam Sawhorses out of 2x6's. Search internet for I-Beam Sawhorses; I made mine as tall as the bed of my truck so I have very little up and down movement of my TC. The construction is simple and could probably support a sherman tank.

RE: Off the truck support options?

Wooden I-Beam sawhorses made out of either 2x6 or 2x8 built to just about the height of your truck bed. Search on the web for free plans.

RE: Checking for rot

Actually in the Class C forum there is a picture of a cab over bed that collapsed onto the top of the truck. A good way to check for rust is to back exterior screws out and if they are rusted there's your sign.

RE: Going to South Dakota, any advice/suggestion?

Sylvan Lake is awesome and you can usually hear the elk bugling. We were in the tent one morning and a herd of elk ran through the campground

RE: Are screw down turnbuckles out of date?

Turnbuckles may not be super strong but if you have ever looked at the attachment points on many TC's they are not really that strong either.

RE: Just Don't Think I Can Do It Anymore

I agree with everything said here. I threw myself into the fire so to speak by going this time of year. We did spend one night at the Pheasant Hill(?) RV Park in Wilsonville and it was GREAT. RV's only no tents which boiled down to mainly retiree's. We have horses so I'm thinking of selling the TC and the horse trailer and buying a horse trailer with Living Quarters. I did winterize the tc and put it back in storage today just in case. I realized that I don't have to go camping ever again if I don't want to it just seems like since I have the camper I feel like I need to use it. We got a really good deal on the hotel on Cannon Beach an recommend the Surfsand Resort. They have an attendant working on the beach and for $10 they will come out and build you a fire. It is going to take a few months to pay this trip off but the dw is happy.

RE: Just Don't Think I Can Do It Anymore

Wow I guess this was a good topic. We dont have kids and really dont like them too much. There are 2 rv parks in Cannon Beach. We had a res at the rv resort but when we checked in there were no less than 10 kids bike in the site next to us. They were very nice and gave us our money back. Then we went to sea ranch rv park and were camped between the horses and lots of kids. We have horses but have never slept in the barn. DW needed to be pampered so we ended up at the surfsand resort for 3 nights. Beyond our budget but dw is happy and she IS the one with a job. We are going to skip the usual driveway overnight at the inlaws in portland and head for home. On the bright side we have a bathroom for dw everywhere we go.

RE: Filling camper water tank from a hand pump?

I use a 5 gallon blue jug with a water spigot screwed into it. I fill it up and put it up on the ledge next to the cabover bed and run a short length of hose out the window into the fill.

Just Don't Think I Can Do It Anymore

This is the second year in a row we have taken the TC to the beach and the wife has only lasted 3 days before we checked into a hotel. The campgrounds seem more crowded, the kids more obnoxious and the showers further away every year. I LOVE my TC when I am working on it and reading this forum but I just no longer enjoy staying in it. Has anyone else experienced the 'lost' feeling of the camping of our youth? My biggest concern when I was 18 was bringing a pillow. Now the list of stuff I seem to need take with us is endless. My wife of course says I can't sell the TC even if she never spends another night in it. Is this a hint???

I had really good luck with a warm metal putty knife. I had my propane cylinder torch on low and kept the knife warm.

RE: Rear tiedowns - do you bother?

I use bumper buttons; the buttons are I think around $32/ea and then a small length of chain and a turnbuckle. Cheap insurance I think.
