RE: Sun covers for tires

Wal-Mart is never cheaper when you consider how much of a taxpayer subsidy they get for their stores and not paying workers a living wage or providing most of them with medical coverage and putting local business owners out of business who actually spend their income in the community instead of sending the money back to Bentonville.
I have no idea what WM pays their employees, but I'm pretty sure those that do choose to work there (and at lest have a job) spend their money locally and do not send it to Bentonville......
I guess elkhornsun doesn't like WM.....I personally love to use them at home to save a few bucks and especially when out in the RV.....one stop shopping, I know pretty much where everything is, I can often get fuel there, I can have all my prescriptions filled at any WM, get our groceries there, have our glasses repaired, grab a quick bite to eat, etc., etc.
You are so right, we always use Wal-Mart, and it makes it nice to find what we need out on the road, all in one store. I don't understand the people that don't like Wal-Mart.

RE: traveling to yellowstone, east entrance from cody on hwy 14.

I have been told that hwy 14 from cody into park is a tough road in a rv pulling a toad, any one have any info on this?
We were told the same thing back in 2007 by friends that had gone all the way around, to go into the West enterance. We used the East enterance, and it was just fine. We pulled our 27ft trailer that way, and I an so glad I didn't listen to our friends. There is nothing wrong with the East Ent.you will not be sorry going that way with your rig. Go for it the climb is nothing you won't find other places.

RE: Television - Do You Need a Special One For an RV?

FWIW, the LED/LCD tvs are much thinner and lighter for the same size screen. We just picked up a 32" HD LED/LCD from Walmart (on-line) for $178.00. Of course it's made in China, but what electronic device isn't these days? Anyway, also bought one of those articulating wall mount units (also made in China) and mounted the tv in the corner of the bedroom.
The picture is great!
Ron
ps.. isn't anything made in the USA anymore?
Answer is NO:(

RE: Walmart overnighting yes or no?

just thought I would ask the question, I am looking at stopping overnight with my family overnight in Cortland, NY at the Walmart. I know lots of people do this but is it safe? Will Walmart bother us or kick us out?
Thanks
When you ask if it's ok also ask where they would like for you to park. I always park where the manager tells me to. By the way it's not camping it's over night parking.

RE: Having a panic attack....

Could not get into Yosimite to camp, so will camp in Groveland. Only problem is priest grade on route 120. Hairpin turns, swithbacks and steep grade. I am very faint of heart, and closing my eyes won't do. We have a 32' 5th wheel. My hubby sees no problem with taking this road and because we will be coming from San Francisco it is the only road into Groveland. I was a nervous wreck descending Mesa Verde. Yosimite is the one place I've wanted to see the most, but this fear is making me consider skipping it. I would feel more comfortable if I knew any other big rig or 5th wheel has taken NEW priest grade on route 120. If anyone has or knows of anyone who has this would ease my mind.
Mema
On July 16, 2009 we took that route with our 2007 GMC 2500 truck pulling a 27 ft. trailer. I had no problem with Rt.120, but our trailer brakes stopped working. The brake controller was flashing "error" I could tell we had nothing coming from the trailer when I applied just the trailer brakes. I didn't tell my wife until after we had seen Yosemite. Our truck brakes handled everything just fine. Now I didn't do any fast driving just took my time, but keep up with the traffic. Later the controller started working, but after we got back home I bought a new one, and the problem was solved.

RE: Pennsylvania

Mostly we've just passed through PA on our way to someplace else, visited Valley Forge, Philadelphia, and a very few of the historical sites. We are planning to wander around PA in June and would like some suggestions for places/things that might not be quite so obvious. I like to do landscape photography. We'll be towing our 17 ft Egg Camper. Thanks
Don't pass up Titusville,Pa they have a train ride, and the very first oil well "Drakes Well" Also near there is Linesville where the ducks walk on the fish you can feed them old bread and watch then fight for it.
Just North of Butler, Pa is the "Old Stone House" it has a lot of history, and that's on the way to Titusville. Butler is the home of the Jeep where the very first one was built in Sept. 1940. About 10 miles from Butler is the McConnell's mill and old griss mill and they it is a very nice place for pictures there is also a covered bridge at the mill, if you would want to see a picture of the mill just let me know I have them.

RE: That don't look good......EWWWWW

Oh I've seen everything. We're summer seasonals. Our site is near the dump station. Thankfully, it's not stinky at all, but I thought, what a horrible site. Au contraire! Since we're never in a hurry to leave on Sunday, we have front row seats to the dumpers and their various methods. Great entertainment.
We've witnessed everything from gloveless handling, snaking the hose through windows, kids sitting on the "curb" near the septic hole, awesome spillages, wife vs. husband battles to people drinking and filling fresh water tanks with the "poop hose".
It takes all kinds I guess, and we've given up trying to re-warn these folks what the bigger-than-life warning signs are trying to warn them about.
As host of a State park campground in Pa. we seen a boy fill his water bottle from the dump station hose. As I was telling him what the hose was used for his grandmother came. She then told him too empty that water out and get water from the fresh water station. We told her too have him get rid of that bottle, but she said it would be ok. What can you do with people like that?

RE: Help with Tire Rub Issue

Looks like a camber problem to me. If it was toe wear the tread blocks would be feather edged. Yours look like they are worn smooth. Call the dealer and maybe email them the same picture. Let them know how far you've driven and how far you have to go to get back to them. see what they offer. Heck, contact the manufacturer also. Tell them you don't think it will make it back on the existing tires and will they reimburse you if you replace them so you can get home?
I contacted my contact at Cruiser, waiting to hear back.
These are those H188ST, which are evidently******tires anyway. It's probably a little bit of both the tire and the camber issue. I'll be in a place on Saturday that I could theoretically get some more tires put on, but I hate to do that knowing I'll just ruin another set.
Any other ideas for temporary fixes? I just checked cold pressure, right on at 50.0. The trailer should distribute the weight on all 4 tires, right? My front compartment is full of stuff, but the tongue shouldn't be overly heavy, but I would bet that more weight is up there. What about loading more of the "stuff" directly over the axles?
I said this in another post about the same type of problem. I had a tire on one side doing that same wear problem, and on the other side it was the tire on the other axle. I took it to a spring shop, and they found that the shakle bushings were shot, and the tires were running off at an angle. When they replaced your axles did they change the bushings in the hangers?

RE: Al ko axle problem

I have a 2004 shamrock by Forest River. Just noticed tire wear on inside of one tire of one axle. Same wear on opposite side, opposite axle. Looking at several posts it would seem Al Ko has a quality control prob. I only put about 750mi per yr so the prob took several yrs to show. It also looks like Al Ko will not has not stood behind their product. Any one else out there with this prob. lately?? Should I just put Dexters on it??
We had a problem just like your's, and I found that the bushings in the spring hangers were shot and after having them replaced the tires wore just like they should. Before you change the axles have a shop check them for you.

RE: POLL: WOULD YOU BUY THE SAME TRUCK AGAIN

Still in the air about which truck to buy; I did make a decision but changed my mind (for now).
Just another decision making tool...
GMC 6.0 engine, and NO I would not buy another one like this.

RE: Yamaha EF2400iSHC Gen Who running their AC from one?

A hard start capacitor could make a huge difference in whether or not it would work. I have a Yamaha EF2800i, which I think shares many of the major components with the model you're looking at. It would not run my 13.5 BTU AC on economode until I added a Supco SPP6E. It's made a huge difference with shore power too.
On edit: Sorry I guess I didn't focus on your subject line very well. Good luck with your decision.
I have had this same set up for 5 years and it starts our 13,500 air cond. we can even use our micro wave at the same time. We start the micro after the air cond. is running.

We could not stay at that place because my wife has health problems and we never know when she may have too go to a hospital. You were so right in doing what you did. Push it all the way, they need to make a change in that rule. You need a way out in case you have too.

RE: Power Chips

I'd challenge any tuner maker to submit a vehicle to EPA testing and publish the results.
Lol....I'd like see any manufacturer get the same mpg as what the EPA gets in their "official" testing.
They are getting close... the latest revisions of tests is coming a lot closer, and yes, they are not there yet.
I am the guy that posted the question, now all of what's been said would a tuner help with better milage on my truck? How good is a Blackbear tuner, or what is the best company to deal with?
Thanks for all the information so far.

RE: Power Chips

I have the 5startuner in my 2005 motorhome with the v10. I do not down shift on many hills that I used to. My gas milage went from 7.9 to 8.3 while towing a 3160 lb hhr. When not towing I get just over 10 mpg accoeding to my scan gauage This may not seem like much but for me every bit helps.
I know what you mean any improvement is a big help with gas on the rise. With only 9 M/G pulling my trailer, and 11 without it I don't think we will be able to go to Alaska pulling our trailer. My wife has big time health problems and the trailer makes life a lot better for her, that's why we want too take the trailer.
Thanks for all the information about the power chips and tuners.

Power Chips

Has anyone used a power chip in their GMC truck for more MPG? I did a search of the web and a ton of them came up, but do they really work?
My truck is the 2500 6.0 gas engine, auto trans. Right now I get only 9 MPG with the trailer on and 11 without it. I asked the dealer if there was any thing I could do to help with the milage. He said for $69.99 they could hook my truck up to their computer and see if Detriot had some changes that could be made to the on board computer that might help. I don't know if I want to spend that kind of money and find out nothing has changed.

RE: Unlevel sites!

Well after reading through RVPR it got me wondering. how many people here get really upset over an unlevel campsite? there always seems to be a few reviewers that comment on how they had to use they`re boards/levelers to level out their RV. Now I know their are a few sites I`ve been to that are extremely unlevel, but not to the point I would comment on it. only one time did I have an issue that bugged me, and that was because my front tongue needed to be waste high to be level!!! otherwise I`ve never given leveling a second thought. I consider it part of RV`ing. just wondering? kinda bored tonite :B
I carry a long 2X10 (as long as the two wheels) and some smaller blocks. We back in find where we want the trailer.
On the low side I put the 2X10 next to the wheels then back up until I can slide the 2X10 over, lined up with the wheels. I put a short 2X4 under the front of the long piece, pull forward until the trailer is level, if need be more blocking under the front of the long board. This I do without even thinking about it, and in no time we have the trailer level and I don't have a lot of wood to carry with me.

RE: Unusual Tire Wear - One Tire Severely Worn

I noticed this weekend that one tire on our tandem axle travel trailer is worn much more than the other three. It's the right rear tire. The tread on this tire is seriously worn down while the other three tires still have a lot of tread left. The travel trailer and tires are just over a year old.
Any ideas what would cause this? Tire pressures are checked frequently so over/under inflation should not be the issue.
We had the same problem and it turned out to be the bushings in the springs and shakle bolts. They were Dexter and they had a plastic type bushing which was worn out.:M

RE: Private Membership RV Clubs

It's just my opinion, but I'm not crazy about ANY of these membership resorts. We joined one about ten years ago, and it was great at first, but then we noticed a few problems with it:
First, you find that as they sell more and more memberships, it becomes progressively harder to get a site.....too much competition from your fellow members.
Second, you find yourself becoming bored with going to the same old place time after time, and eventually you start going to other parks for a change of pace, but you're STILL paying for the membership.
Third, the dues or maintenance fees, seem to go up every year, and you eventually realize that you're not camping for "free" like they advertised, you're just PRE-paying for the site, whether you use it or not.
Finally, you decide that it's not what you thought it would be, and decide to sell the membership, but find the market glutted with other sellers.
I finally got rid of mine, but I would NEVER consider a membership again.....especially if I was just starting out RVing. There are just too many other places to see out there. JMHO
We never got into that type of camping and for what you said I never will. Well said.
