RE: It finally happened at the dump station...

In mid-July, we camped at a nice RV resort, beside a couple and their teenage daughter, who all had a "big city" attitude about them, very sophisticated in the clothing attire for candle-light dinners, a casual glass of expensive wine during and after the meal, on and on ad nauseum. . . She wouldn't lift a finger to help, as if she was afraid of getting dirty (hight maintenance), and he was very obsessive/compulsive about things having to be just perfect. Clincher came when they dumped the tanks at their on-site hookup, to leave. He simply pulled the tank valves, both at the same time, if I recall. When the waste stopped flowing, he unhooked the white fresh water hose from the camper and stuck it down the stinky slinky to rinse. All that first impression of sophistication, wealth, and class got washed right down the drain, literally. I just looked at my wife and said, "They's city folk, ya'll can tell."

RE: R L S

I just today looked at a Jay Flight 26RLS with two swivel rockers. Salesman explained that they were both to be flipped upside down on the sofa and strapped down with straps supplied by Jayco. He also said we might want to replace the standard straps with something stronger.

RE: Mountains or Turnpike?

I have towed our 28' JayFlight over both routes and prefer, hands down, the PA Turnpike. The hills are much less stressful and predictable than the steeper and more frequent climbs and descents on 68. Someone previously posted about 6% grades on all interstates, but you will find several 7.5% grades on 68. The downhill runs on these are the ones that make the PA Tpk my choice for travel.

RE: toms cove cg va

We've been to Tom's Cove 5 or 6 times. The last 4 times, we've stayed in section M, the week before Pony Penning. It's not crowded then, but the temps and the skeeters were a problem in 2010, the last time we were there. We spend most of our time at the beach on Assateague, at the pool, or in town shopping or resturants. Mr. Baldy's is a great home-town breakfast spot, just down the street from Tom's. Check out Cap'n Zack's for seafood carry-out and the BBQ shop near the traffic circle on the way to Assateague.

RE: Not a good (camping) year for us!!

Our summer camping experiences were also cut short due to family health issues. My wife and I were only 2 or 3 days into our 2-week vacation when we were called , on July 14, with news that my dad was in the hospital, suffering from a mild heart attack. One stent was installed at that time, and 2 more still need to be installed.
My wife had just retired on July 1, and had scheduled a surgery, for July 26, to repair damage to her left achilles tendon. That out-patient surgery went well, but with a prognosis for a long recovery.
The very next day, I drove myself to the ER, shortness of breath and tightness in the chest. Medical staff determined, after a clean heart cath, that it was probably stress related angina. My symptoms worsened over the next 2 or 3 weeks, until I was able to convince my doctor it was more than stress or a respriatory infection. A more thorough scan of my lungs detected blood clots in both lungs, and a doppler check determined that I had serious blood clots in my entire left leg. More surgery followed to remove the clots from the leg and install a filter to block future clots. The doctors now tell me I'll be on blood thinning medication for the rest of my life, not exactly what I was hoping for in my "mid-50s".
But the good news is that we're all alive, and hopefully, on the road to recovery. Dad is back home, waiting for the next surgery and stents. My wife is healing and recovering well with her foot. And I am slowly, but surely, regaining my strength and stamina. We are all facing many continuing doctor visits and treatments, but we're still hoping and planning some more time in the TT before winter closes us down.

RE: Black Streak Prevention Question

Extentions for the rain gutter/spouts will help to some extent by directing the rain water away from the camper body. One easy step in battling this problem.

RE: The term "dog owner" tickles me

While packing the TT for a trip, our two dogs disappeared and couldn't be found for 30-40 minutes. We searched for a while, then presumed they went roaming in the woods, not unusual. We found them sitting in the back seat of the Suburban waiting for us to finish packing, they couldn't wait to go camping!

RE: grey and black tanks readings wrong

Once you find a way to get correct tank reading , please share with the rest of us.
Black Tank:
1. Open toilet lid
2. Step on pedal to open flap
3. Shine flash light down opening
4. If you can see TP and #2 floating by......run don't walk to a dump station! :B
Gray Tank:
If your shower tray is full of water and you are not in it taking a shower....you tank is full! :B
See you really don't need no stinkin tank sensors.
Same procedure in our camp!!!
I do find the fresh water sensor and the battery sensor to be fairly reliable. But, IMHO, those two other stinky-sensors are there to impress new buyers at the RV Shows and on the sales lot, not good for much of anything else after the first fill-up.

RE: Best Weight Distributing Hitch with Sway Control?

Best bang for the buck is the Reese dual cam.
X2!!!!!
I didn't have to fuss with the "dial it in" issues. I have a reliable dealership who did all that for me, and have never had the need to readjust anything. Having such a good service department isn't always a given, if you're driving the long distance to pick it up, but is a "priceless" asset for all your maintenance issues.

RE: Anyone know how much damage Assateague suffered..

The VA end of Assateague island has reopened to some public access. However, the public beach and its associated parking lot were covered with sand from the hurricane, and state and federal officials are working to clear and repair a limited area of parking and beach for the up-coming Labor Day weekend. Log on to an appropriate web site for the MD end of the island. I checked the Chincoteague Chamber of Commerce web site for my info, since our trips to the area take us to the Chincoteague end of the islands.

RE: Calling West Virginia Residents

When we're in Fayetteville for Bridge Day, in October, we stay at Rifrafters Campground. Google their website for more info. We've been staying there for about 8 or 9 years, and have become good friends with the owner, Randy. May I also recommend a dinner at Dirty Ernie's Rib Pit, a fun atmosphere and great food!

RE: Sanitizing Your RV Water Hose

My owner's manual also recommends the 1/4 cup for 15 gallons ratio. My 60 gallon FW tank gets the full 1 cup when I de-winterize in the spring. In order to sanitize both the tank and the hose, I simply insert the male end of the hose to the camper fill valve, pour the entire one cup of bleach in the female end of the hose, attach the hose to the spigot, and fill the FW tank. The bleach is flushed through the hose, sanitizing as it goes, and is then adequately mixed as the rest of the fresh water fills the holding tank. After waiting the required time, I further sanitize the entire water system by running the solution through the pump and out each and every spigot in the camper and into the gray water tank. This is then drained down my paved driveway (not an environmental/code problem where I live, IMHO). Another one or two tanks full of fresh water usually serve to flush out any remanining smell or taste of the bleach. My Jayco owners manual also suggests adding a baking soday mixture to neutralize the bleach smell/taste problem, but I've never felt the need to use it.

RE: Rug Container

We have the open-mesh storage bags for our mats, and store them in the front pass-thru storage, normally. But, if they've been soaked or muddy, they wedge snuggly behind the bike rack bolted to the back bumper of the TT. The bike rack is used to carry our blue tote, strapped on, rather than bikes. The mats fit so snuggly that we've never had any problem with them shifting about. Perhaps these mats could also be wedged in or strapped on between a spare tire carrier and the camper???

RE: Mirrors

I've used the CIPA mirrors on a Dodge Dakota pickup and on the three Suburbans we've owned. Each set is engineered for the specific tow vehicle. The three Suburbans have been able to utilize the same set. IMHO, these are the best value for those of us who aren't full-timers.

RE: Interstate 70 from St louis to Pennsylvania Turn Pike

I prefer going straight through on 70, the 270 beltway is a lengthy detour with traffic as heavy and fast as you'll see on the main route. Most professional truck drivers will do the same thing, taking advantage of the shorter distance and time factors.

RE: Keys

Our Jay Flight 25RKS came with two keys, one for each of the two entry doors (covered with a black rubberized manterial), as well as the universal silver key for all storage bays. One "black" key locks both the handle and the deadbolt on each door, memorize the numbers etched on each key to learn which key for which door. The top key slot is to be turned from 12 o'clock to 3 o'clock to lock, then remove the key. The bottom slot turns the key from 12 o'clock to 9 o'clock, then back again to 12 o'clock before removing. To unlock the doors, simply reverse the "combination".
