RE: Baby it's cold outside and wet inside.

Definitely get a dehumidifier. I bought a 25 pint Fridgedaire from Lowes for $160 (they have bigger ones) and it was probably the best accessory I've ever purchased. And I've been RVing since 1987. It's amazing how much moisture will accumulate just from bathing, cooking, and maybe some laundry drying. We usually camp in weather no colder than 25-40 degrees and generally in the mountains of Colorado where the outside humidity is low anyway and still may have to empty the dehumidifier tank every 2-3 days. No windows sweating, not even the single layer windshield. Wagonmaster2 2004 Meridian 36' DP

RE: mnotorhome magazine march issue page 4

Even Toyota and Nissan no longer list a 4x4 that can be towed 4 down. I always thought any vehicle with a transfer case with a Neutral could be towed flat down. Don't know what has happened. Thus as stated above, I tow a Jeep Wrangler but would love to have a good small size 4x4 auto PU to tow. Right now I think GM is the only one with a smaller size. Wagonmaster2

Removing air lines from Midland Purest air dryer

I have the Midland Purest Air dryer (think that's the description, or is it Haldex) on my 2004 Freightliner chassis that gives me problems removing the air lines. It is held in place by 3 bolts to the frame and the top of it is held down with 4 bolts that must be removed to access the filter. The last time I changed the filter on the air dryer I was unable to remove the air line that is held on with the slip type catch, kind of like the Chinesse finger trap. One of the air lines is just screwed on and no problem but the one with the slip type just wouldn't budge so the filter had to be changed from under the coach which was a real pain. The dryer can be removed from the frame but held in place with the air lines still attached while changing the filter but no fun. Question is: Does anyone with this arrangement know how to get that one air line loose? It would be so much easier to change the filter if the dryer could be removed out to the work bench, and probably be a lot less apt to get contaminates in it during the filter change. It was impossible to get off 4 years ago so it will probably be double that by now. I know Freightliner tells me they change the filters without even removing the 3 bolts holding the dryer to the frame but I can't imagine doing it that way. Wagonmaster2

RE: steer safe

I had one on a 1993 P30 28' Bounder. When I first purchased the coach new on a first outing short trip a slight side wind had the it all over the road and the steer safe helped that tremendously. So when I traded for a 1997 P30 Southwind that was the first thing I put on it. Wagonmaster2

RE: Best source for ISL air filter

A Fleetguard Engineer states that you should not change the filter unless the Filter Minder shows the filter is dirty. Opening up the filter system allows dust to enter. I might add that he claims that almost all MH manufacturers install filters that are too small. He does not like the Ecolite filters for that reason. I think they use small filters as space is a problem. Moisheh That's kind of the attitude I've always taken. The last time I changed mine at 4 years old the Filter Minder read 15 on the old one and after resetting it still read 15 on the new one. Had a Cat dealer in Wichita tell me that if a person didn't keep their air cleaners changed at proper intervales the filter paper could deterioate, come apart, and get into the engine/injectors causing all sorts of problems. I suppose so if the filter was 10 years old and had been run in a lot of rain or high humidity, but just seemed to me like a good "sales pitch". Wagonmaster2

RE: Eliminating State Income Tax

Thanks for all the replys. I'm sure Oklahoma is going to get its money from us one way or the other. The argument for eliminating the state income tax is that the state is going to cut expenses in enough places to offset the lose of the income tax. And just look at all the industry that will come running into the state with no income tax to pay. Yeh, sure, and the sun comes up in the West every morning. Thanks again. Wagonmaster2

RE: Best source for ISL air filter

Golly, what a deal that is. The best price I've been able to find so far for the air cleaner on my Cat C-7 has been $81 (RVchassisparts- part number 114880-003) and the last time I changed it two of us worked about 30-45 minutes wrestling that dude around to get it stuck back into the rubber connections. Laying under the back end of the coach and working around the muffler doesn't help matters any. Wagonmaster2

Eliminating State Income Tax

This is a question for those RVers who uses Texas as their main address because of no income tax. There's a push in Oklahoma to eliminate the state income tax to conform to surrounding states like Texas and further away like South Dakota. And there's a web site now asking for opinions from Oklahomans. I've read that Texas property tax is extremely high, maybe making up for lost income tax money, so I was wondering if this might really be the offset. Our income tax is 5.25% or less depending on what rate the person falls into and our autos are taxed at about 3.25% excise tax instead of the sales tax rate of 8.67%. I retired from a financial institution where we did some auto financing for customers living in Texas and it seemed the sales taxes on autos were terrible. My property tax here in Oklahoma on $150,000 home is running about $660/year so I'd hate to see that jump just because they eliminated the income tax. Guess my loaded question for Texans is, do you feel you're paying for the "no state income tax" in other ways? I just wonder if the right hand giveth and the left hand taketh away so I'm not sure how to answer their web site survey. Full timing could be a possibility in the future for us and I know the question of a home state will always need to be decided on so all this is very pertenant to me. Thanks fellows for any input. Will be greatly appreciated and hope you overlook my rambling on like this. Wagonmaster2

RE: Towing aToyota Tacoma???

Thanks bumpyroad, I guess one of the plus's for a Tacoma is good trade-in value. I found two 2012 GMC Canyon's on a local lot with minor hail damage. Both have around 9k, one is the 5 cylinder inline and the other 5.3L V8, both are 4WD, auto. I think I'll see how they will trade. Be Blessed!!! I have a 2006 Colorado 2x4 with the 5 cyl, wasn't aware they ever put V8s in them. In a 4x4 that ought to make an awesome off road vehicle with a V8, and assuming GM has improved their quality control over he last few years. Any idea what it will cost to get a tow bracket installed on one? Wagonmaster2

RE: Going to travel the Trans Canada Highway and have questions.

All I know is they gave my family HELL when we crossed the Canadian border. I have no idea why. I was respectful, courteous. We had our 5 children with us knew our destionation... They pulled us all out and searched the RV for 3 hours. I'll never go back to Canada. I'm with you. No way do I want a bunch of strangers tromping across my carpet with their parking-lot dirtied street shoes, pawing through all my clothes drawers, shuffling around in my closet, digging through the kitchen drawers and pantry, etc. with hands that heaven knows where they've been or handled before the search. Many people tell how violated they feel after a home burglary and I'm sure that's how I'd feel after a complete search. I've been into Canada back in the 70's with an automobile and realize how beautiful the country is, but so is the U. S., which makes it not worth the hassle going in either direction across the border. And as was stated, being from Oklahoma is like have a big sign on your RV, "Search Me". The Canadian Director of Tourism (think that was his title) several years ago remarked in the Motor Home Magazine after reading about many complaints of searches that he encouraged the owners to accompany their guards during an RV search, but I've yet to hear of anyone that was allowed to do this. Upper management has no idea what's going on down the line in the real world. Wagonmaster2

RE: Towing aToyota Tacoma???

Wonder if Toyota and Nissan ever happen to read any of these Forum posts to realize what kind of market they are losing out on? I've towed a Wrangler for 10 years and now would like a small 4x4 automatic PU for comfort, room, and carrying capacity but unfortunately found out only GM makes this possible with their Colorados and Canyons. RE: What do you use your outdoor shower for?

Have never used it. Took the shower head off of it and used it inside when the one on the inside shower quit spraying. Just something else to have to think about when doing winterizing. Wagonmaster2

RE: Shurflo Smart Sensor 5.7 vs Revolution 4008 pumps

Sounds about like me. I'm ready for my 5th one, not counting the original one that came with the coach. Amazing Shurflo could even keep up with production to replace all the failing ones in the last 5-6 years. Guess eventually they'll run out of the 5.7s then we'll have to take the cheapy one for replacement. Unless their engineers get on the ball and develop a comparable pump. Wagonmaster2

RE: Shurflo Smart Sensor 5.7 vs Revolution 4008 pumps

My latest replacement that now is in need of being replaced shows it was assembled outside the U. S. , wonder if they all have been and might be part of the problem with the 5.7. One of my current problems is that my pump would keep running (rather a low humming that could only be heard up very close in the compartment) and if the wall switch was left on for an hour or so the pump motor got so hot it wouldn't start pumping water until the wall switch was turned off and back on again. Was able to help some by adjusting the screw in the center of the head but then it wouldn't run water for several seconds when the faucet was opened. Could fix one problem and create another. Shurflo should be sending out a check with each replacement if all they have to offer is the cheaper Revolution pump but I know that will never happen. Wagonmaster2

RE: Atlanta to Colorado

Thanks JD, looks like we'll probably get to try out the by-pass in late May or early June since this is usually our first trip of the season to Gunnison and Ouray (that is assuming my recovery from hip replacement in late March goes like everyone says it should). Wagonmaster2

RE: Atlanta to Colorado

If you plan on taking HWY 24 from Limon to Colorado Springs there is a bridge being replaced east of Colorado Springs but the bypass is no problem to negotiate and there is no problem with delays. Any idea how long before the bridge is completed? We travel from Oklahoma to Gunnison a couple times a year and this is the route we take. Any problem with the by-pass in a 36' mh towing a Wrangler? RE: Really Big Campsites

The biggest sites we've seen, and maybe the fanciest, were at Crown Villa RV Resort in Bend, OR. Beat me to it. I was just getting ready to get up to look in my Trailer Life Directory for Crown Villa. Stayed there in Bend several years ago but couldn't remember the name of the CG. You're right on the size, think I could set my 1,600 sq ft house on the sites. Wagonmaster2

RE: Shurflo Smart Sensor 5.7 vs Revolution 4008 pumps

And the worst part of it all is they don't have a comparable pump to replace the 5.7s with under warranty. If you've paid over $200 for the 5.7 the Revolution 4008 they are replacing it with has about 1/2 the water flow and sells for just over $100. Wonder if they'd give a person two 4008 for the defective 5.7? Then we'd always have a good spare. Funny, I know. Wagonmaster2

RE: Using a Sears water softner in stick house

I wouldn't go too cheap. At the bare minimum get one that regenerates by metering the amount of water used. They will pay for themselves with the savings of salt and water wasted during unnecessary regeneration. Agree, I never like to go the cheapest nor the most expensive on anything but the tiny are the builder left for the softener doesn't really give us much choice. Even though our current rental is an automatic the wife keeps track of how many days and how many loads of wash she does since the last re-charge and we just start the recharge as needed. Sometimes it'll only be two days later and sometimes 4-5 days. Takes a little bit of accounting but worth it. Would be nice to have one that meters water useage but don't think we have that much room to install one. Will do some more measuring. But you know the old saying " measure twice and cut off once", which I do and still come out wrong. Same with our small space, if I can't measure precisely we'll end up with a softener we can't install. Thanks for all the suggestions. Wagonmaster2
