RE: Class B+ priced way over NADA

Make them an offer based upon nada. Who cares what they are asking. If they say yes to your offer then there you go. When we bought our rig the seller was asking Nada, we offered 10k less, he countered for 8k less, and it is ours. If you are shopping in Calif it is a buyers market; lowball and you may get a steal.

RE: Biggest New 5er behind my '06 Dodge 2500?

I disagree. See our sig. 4 slides, 37', <=13500 when loaded. We are within specs on all numbers and have towed the rig with great success through most of the lower 48. You will need airbags and should already have the exhaust brake installed. The only difference between my truck and yours, other than the spring pack, is probably lack of 4x4. Saves us a few hundred pounds. plus the short bed saves a few dozen more.
Do note that running at the limits will put additional stress on components so you will need to be religious on maintenance.

RE: Young family potentially hitting the road soon

I agree with a lot of the sentiment already expressed on here... sounds like you are heading for trouble. My wife and I are young, started when I was 30 and she was 25, and like you I work as a web designer and internet marketer. We planned and worked toward this lifestyle for two years in advance. Hitting the road I had completely setup a virtual business and our income has grown every year since.
As a young full timing family you need to start with a totally different perspective than the folks who are retired. You need to have steady work, growing savings, and a long term view on the life you want to lead. In our case we do everything the same as if we were living stationary; the only change is that our home moves around every few weeks. We work a regular schedule and spend our free time enjoying the area.
As a perfect example of potential problems with your plan... in our very first trip out we suffered a blow out. Within 500 miles a second blowout. After the first week we were out 1500 bucks in tires alone! Do you have the cash to handle the inevitable?

RE: Truck Tire Suggestions

Op... we have the same weight trailer and essentially the same truck. Went with the ms2 and am really happy with the decision. The only downside so far is that these tires grab and throw large rocks when driving on gravel or dirt. I was unaware of this and found out the hard way on our first dirt road. Otherwise they are great.

RE: Banking while on the road

BofA contrary to their name is not operating in every state. Co and Wy for ex have no branches. The advise for the credit unions is spot on.

RE: RV Graphics ?

Every once in a while I search ebay for my brand rig. I have purchased 2 random stripes and replacements for all the lettering for a grand total of $15 plus shipping. I simply store away what I dont need.

RE: Trouble with heat in Sandpiper 355 qbq 2011 model.

Thanks for fast reply. The bottom is covered ... should i take that plastic off or try one if those inspection cameras in the vents.
Jason
whichever is easiest. On our rig there are a few spots inside where I can pull a panel and see underneath, cant fix anything just see if there are issues.

RE: Dexter EZ Flex question

I'm no expert but I don't think they would cause your springs to fail. What's wrong with the springs, is there cracked leafs or?
No visible cracks. Riding 1/2 in lower on driver side and both sides have light scuffing where the tires have rubbed the underside of the rig. I was guessing that they were losing arch. Was arranging to take it in to trailer shop.
To rocketscientist - wouldn't the shorter equalizer place undue stress on the springs?
UPDATE
Just spoke with Dexter. The new order of EZ Flex are due in 30-45 days. They will be shipping me out a replacement setup. Discussed the spring wear and they are not related to the failing EZ-Flex. Service was really professional.

RE: Dexter EZ Flex question

Okay this pisses me off. During our last trip out I noticed the rig riding low on one side. I assumed it was just my springs going bad. I have been talking with a local trailer repair shop about replacing the springs, they needed some measurements of the springs so today I climbed underneath. As I was there I remembered this thread and took a look at the ez flex. Both sides are crushed and cracked! I installed these in Jan 11 and they have about 8k. Could this defect have caused premature wear of my springs?

At least you changed them before they shredded and caused damage.

RE: Tires in Idaho or Montana?

To the original question Idaho will be your best bet. We purchased four new truck tires while in Montana. They have no sales tax but the per tire price was higher by about $20 per tire. We also had a really hard time finding a reputable shop to do the work and when we finally did the workers damaged all 4 rims while mounting.
Our original plan was to make it to the Couer d Alene area and purchase tires at Discount Tires. They are affiliated with Americas Tire which is a large chain down in our home turf of so calif.
Overall there is a lot of competition in that area for business so just call around for the best price.

RE: EZ-Flex

I had one go in rather easy last year when I installed mine. Fast forward to now and I will be replacing the springs because they are worn out. Your springs may be shot.

RE: Neighbor hit my MH!!!

Great advise all around. Go thru his ins company. Get a copy of the note left at the office manager, get a written testimony from the manager, if possible get written admission from the at fault. Accident occurred on private property in Ventura Cnty, cops will not come out. Take the above noted documentation down to jurisdiction in charge of that area; either Ventura pd or Sheriff. They will fill out the rest.
Don' t let the other party or their ins know you were selling it. It is your baby that you took and take wonderful care of. Make them fix it to pre-accident condition.

RE: ADVICE FOR A NEWBY

Wow. This is a dealer problem to handle. Water is not necessarily bad as long as it was removed before penetrating the flooring, walls, or furniture. If it were me I would demand a replacement. If this gets back to the manu they will probably be none too happy. It is up to the dealer to perform an initial test of the various systems in fact you were probably charged a few hundred for them to have done so. Water lines are the worst as they tend to get loose after the first few pulls.

RE: How To Remove Orignal TV From 2006 Montana

Our Challenger is basically a rebranded Montana. When I removed the tv there were a series of cover boards screwed around the frame, a velcro strap over the top, and about 20 oz of that black goop on the bottom. Took a flat head screw driver and a bit of force to finally pop it loose from the goop. There were no screws driven into the tv itself. If yours is the original just be careful, those crts are front heavy and once pulled loose it will try to tip forward.

RE: Air Bags Needed?

In our case we do not need them but I find the ride to be much smoother with them. My pin weight is just enough to have the 1 ton leaves barely touch their mounts. On smooth roads it is fine but pulling around the off road courses we call freeways in so- cal causes the rear end to bounce on and off the springs.

RE: Top Three!

One of the best threads I have read in a while! Our 3 things:
1. no one else really cares how great your lifestyle is. If you blog about it make the blog for You. Same goes when talking with folks; ft means so many things to so many people. In conversation we just answer that we are travelling.
2. already noted a few times =SLOW DOWN
3. Take lots of pictures

RE: Keystone Runaround

Actually my main concern is that the tires on this unit are not what the placard says they should be. Placard 235/85/R16E... the unit has 235/80/R16 tires...the Placard calls for E meaning 10 ply, the tire says 5 ply...this and the proper inflation of the tires actually on my unit is my main concern...the tires state that the psi should be whatever the mfg says on the placard but the mfg put different tires than the placard calls for.
We had the exact same issue and they responded the exact same way. When replacing the tires I went with the tire that matched the sticker in BFG TA. They too are e rated and we run at max psi. If you know the exact weight riding on each tire there are tables out there that will guide you as to the adjusted pressure.

Mattress Lift Gas Springs - Upgrading Problems

When we bought our rig the first thing out the door was the cheap mattress. Replaced it with a regular household mattress. Only problem has been its weight and not being able to lift the bed easily and leave it propped up while accessing the storage underneath.
Decided to order some same length and stroke 150lbs struts to replace the original 80lbs units. Just mounted them and they are too strong. Completely bent the strut mounting bolts. Any ideas how to rectify?
