RE: Help me narrow down from 3 choices...

I guess I should just keep researching rigs under 30 ft. and under 6000 dry my lesson learned the hard way. use the GVWR of the trailer to make your tow vehicle decision.. The dealers will not make these as easy to find as the dry weights they will have plastered all over the sales signs... it will be on a sticker on the street side front of the unit.. buy a TV that can pull that weight and handle the tongue weight at the GVWR.. remember in my earlier post I said I used to have a yukon XL... buying on dry weight made it obsolete. RE: Help me narrow down from 3 choices...

There is NO way I would want to tow a 30+ TT with any of the vehicles you are reviewing. The 2009 and 2011 Dodge Durango are two different generations. A 2500 series Suburban would make for the best towing capable large SUV. Why not? Without knowing the specs off hand, a Suburban's wheelbase should be similar to a crew cab/shortbed or ext cab/longbed pickup. Can't see why it would be less capable than a similarly-sized pickup. Do agree with you, though, that IMO a 2500 Sub would be the best bet. While I agree it's probably "best case scenario" to tow with a 2500, my husband would flip over the thought of that being my daily driver. Ok, maybe 32-34ft. would be getting a bit long and 7900 a bit heavy. My uncle tows an Open Range 32 ft. 6800 lb. trailer with his 1500 Suburban, although he has a tow package on it that's supposedly rated to 10K lbs or something? I can't imagine that in order to have a 30-32 ft. trailer, we NEED a huge truck or 2500....right? I should probably be looking for something more in the 6-7500K I suppose? what you really have to watch is handling the tongue weight of a large TT with a 1500 series.. with a GVWR of 7900 you could be looking at a solid 900lbs of tongue weight +/- 100-200. you can estimate this on 13-15% or gvwr or loaded weight of the TT if you know it.. so consider the payload capacity of any 1500 and then take away the curb weight and the weight of your dogs/family and see what you are left with... I recently worked through this with my brother in law and there was no way around a 2500 series burb... I really stress doing the math on this as I used to have a 1500 series burb and you will notice I no longer have it... Bryan

RE: TV Tire Selection

I used to have a similar tow vehicle. The best recommendation I can give you is to move from P-rated tires to load range-D rated tires, unless you have already done so. Stiffer sidewalls will help you with stability. As for brands, I am a fan of BFG All Terrain TAs and Toyo Open County AT's. Also had D-rated Cooper discoveries on my Yukon and they were great too. RE: New Truck Break in period

Haven't decided about adding any steps to it, she said getting in and out with a dress was an interesting proposition but was a good sport about it. I never ended up adding steps to mine and don't really miss them. Nice to have the ground clearance and they don't load up with snow and slouch in the winter Bryan

RE: New Truck Break in period

I have also heard it is for the ring gear. I had the same issue a while back and just went out for drives every night the week before the trip. Map out the local Dairy Queens that will give you inspiration to clock the needed miles... Bryan

RE: just saw post on ez lube

Would you have a good source for buying the backing plate assemblies? I might just go ahead and buy bearings, seals and backing plates for spare parts if they're not that expensive. I have typically bought parts locally. We have a couple RV store with decent parts supply and also a good trailer parts store as well. I have a hard time matching numbers, so I just carry in my old parts... seals, bearings, etc.. and say match it.. FWIW while you are getting parts, I always carry an extra set of bearings and a seal or two with me in the TT... Bryan

RE: just saw post on ez lube

pulling, inspecting and re-packing is the same on an EZ-lube as any other trailer axle.. Pretty simple and cheap to do yourself, just messy.. Personally I like to see it all, so I pull, inspect and repack every 2-3 years. If I had to do brakes I would swap backing plates. Not bad $$ wise and a heck of a lot quicker.. I had to swap a set of magnets on my TT and it took quite a bit of time, just to do them.. Bryan

RE: Music download transportability

Only real way around this issue is to record the licensed file to a cd and re-rip it to a file imp3 format. This is reall why when folks ask what tablet , music player or phone I should get my first reply is what online store do you want to buy media from The ads on tv make it all seem so simple... Bryan

RE: Towing long or short TT?

Our first one wasn 26ft and the current one is 31, actually about 34 ft overall Really not too much difference to tow. The really big difference was the height... The first one did not have a slide and was really low slung. I drug the rear end of it everywhere I went. I ended up flipping the axles which helped quite a bit, but still was challenging at times. The current one sites much higher and I would definitely watch for that as part of looking for my next unit . I really have not found a place I wanted to go that I could not get I and out of. Bryan

RE: DSLR, Live View and RAW question

Not to open up another can of worms but in considering a new camera purchase I would be giving more consideration to the lens than to RAW or live view. I see so many really nice cameras out there in kits with glass that just does not keep up with the camera. . I am with you. I don't use RAW, but rarely have to do much post processing to make them look good for what we use them for. For me having good lens for low light conditions was the best investment I could make Bryan

RE: Ipad or Android Tablet?

this may be more than you want, but I wrote this up in the past for someone who was considering a Toshiba Thrive.. First is from the aspect of why I bought an Ipad, but secondly how I would base the decision if I had not had some of the reasons below... When I was considering an Ipad, I had already : Owned several ipods and had purchased/licensed content from iTunes, or had a significant library of audio and video files that were in format to support apple products... For instance, my first couple MP3 players were Rio products and could play either MP3 or WMA files. I had ripped most everything in WMA for them, but when I got an iPod free from work, I converted it all to MP3. At this point just about anything will play MP3 files, but when you consider video you have formatting concerns as well. So onto video, when the iPod touch came out I began a project to convert all of our DVDs into files that could play on the iPod. At this point that is like 2200 files totaling almost 750GB, so it's a large investment in time... the iPad could play all of this stuff with no re-work, whereas not all tablets would... sames as why we bought an apple tv, and before we bought our roku box, I shipped some of our video files to a buddy to ensure compatibility first... purchased /licensed content.. Took me a while to finally break down and do it, but I started buying a lot more and now pretty much exclusively buy music through iTunes... With that comes licensing for some content and also format... You have this with any storefront for content (think kindle/nook) so since we were already into apple, we stayed that way.. lastly experience... we have had great experience with our apple products... The user experience is amazing... they are very intuitive devices.. so it was easy to consider more of the same... I do not care for iTunes, but it keeps getting better and better for managing content... So now onto what if I had nothing, how would I decide... so price is certainly important, but unless it was like a 2x difference the other stuff in this list would matter more... what do I intend to use it for? if it is just for a web browser, then it seems just about any tablet has that... If I wanted certain apps/functionality, then I would see if it was available on the platform... What media do I want to put on it (pictures/video/music) and how is that done? For instance apple/itunes model works very well and relatively easy to use. Compare to my Blackberry experience.... The media manager product for it could not handle the size of our library of files, and the interface was terrible... For a android based tablet, what interface do they provide and how well does it work?? I have seen the PC interface for putting content on some of the droid phone models and they are not all real pretty. The demos on TV are slick, but you need to ask/think, what did it take to put all that content on that device... App store: what might you want apps wise and is it available on the platform?? need to consider what you might use it for as to what you would need for apps... market share and alignment with core business... I realize market share depends upon what site you look at and I am not suggesting that it is most important to use the most popular platform, but consider what business a company is in... Think about Dell and the smartphone market... they have been in, but got right back out... For those that bought it, they soon had a orphan product... So the toshiba tablet looks slick, but will they stay in the tablet business long term?? To me this is important as it drives the apps that ill be developed and the accessories that will be developed by third parties... MS Zune music player is a good example of this. They came out late to market as an also ran to apple... Neat device, but required different format, different store, etc.... Since they couldn't make money in the market they got out relatively quickly. I think they were in the market for about 3 years in total. If you went into a best buy and looked at accessories for ipod vs. zune it was 99% ipod, 1% zune... BTW they ended up buying two thrives and really do like them, but they are not folks that have much of any music/video content. Mostly use it for web , email and some apps. Although they now have an iPad 3 as well.. BTW, we now have two iPad 2's and four iPhones in our family (just traded in the last two droid phones)... so i guess I am a bit prejudiced... Bryan

RE: Towing a 33' bumper pull

mine is 34 ft ball to bumper and the truck adds another 23ft or so. Really have not had a problem with it. Toughest part is the corners in some campgrounds, just need to think them through before going down that road. I have been towing for years though and am very comfortable driving and backing my setup, so that helps as well. Bryan

RE: Removal of small concrete splash on camper door?

i would try white vinegar and a soft cloth. I had concrete on my truck a while back and it worked.. vinegar is a weak acid and should clean it up.. Bryan

RE: DSLR, Live View and RAW question

i also use the view finder, not the LCD screen. I think having the camera up to my eye makes for a steadier shot.. mine will save in RAW, but I just use JPG ... For what we do with our pictures (share online, scrapbook , even 11x8.5 prints ) it is plenty good enough for us.. enjoy, they are fun cameras.... my view is go less expensive on the camera itself, so you have more money for lens'... even a low level DSLR is more useful with a couple of good pieces of glass, than a really high even body with just the stock lens.. RE: RV checklist sharing between devices

if both i-devices use the same iTunes account you can turn on iCloud and share documents, tasks (reminders) and notes between them... Other great solution which works on those devices and also your PC and web is Evernote.... Bryan
