RE: I'm bragging - taking off weight !

I agree with with NoraExplora. I did the Dukan Diet which is a low carb way of eating that allows for carbs in the form of complex carbs which means fruits and veggies. Unlike the Atkins Diet, it is low fat. I usually eat eggs for breakfast with 30 minutes of waking up. I walk a mile or two 5 times a week. I prolly eat more that I ever did, just no processed foods.. I went from 270 down to 195-200. I've been there for 18 months now. My Doc is liking my numbers. Sugar, Cholesterol, Blood Pressure were all high and are now all in the normal range. My only complaint was having to buy all those new clothes.

RE: Need help/advice on bakes and power steering

Dr Quick, that was the problem. What a pain to change that thing. I had to get a special tool to get the pulley off, and to change the tank was a PIA. It's getting harder and harder to fix these things on your own. It used to be an hour and a half job to change a pump.

RE: Need help/advice on bakes and power steering

Hi, Bud. I've got a serpentine belt. I checked the power steering fluid and the belt. All looks good. I have no fluids on the ground or all over the engine. I guess that may mean a bad pump?

Need help/advice on bakes and power steering

Boy, do I have a problem. I'm 1200 miles from home and still in the water. I just lost brakes AND power steering in my Chevy Class C with a 454. I was at the gas pump here in Walmart and had to make a tight turn to get out. Everything was fine. As soon as I came out of the turn, very little brake and no power steering. Any one have any ideas? Waiting for Good Sam to call me back. Stuck in the Walmart lot in Defuniak Springs, FL.

RE: How to identify the breaker for the converter / charger?

That is exactly what I do. If my cable is plugged into the 30A female outlet in the cable storage compartment, then I am on generator. I installed a 110 outlet in the storage bay right next to the 30A outlet that is tied into the inverter. If I'm plugged into that I'm set to use the inverter. I just don't use the microwave, AC or converter when I'm on the inverter. I can hear the converter hum when it's on. It stops when I hit the right breaker. Easy.

RE: Wierd heating issue

I love when things go nice and easy. I went out there this morning figuring I'd have to take it in for service, and who is going to want to work on it a couple days before Christmas?
The board and the connector was LOADED with a thick coating of dust. I pulled the board, blew it off with my compressor and then used a paint dust to make sure all the dust was gone. Cleaned up the the female part of the connector and put it all back together. It fired right up and I let it run for a couple of hours before shutting it down.
Problem solved. NEXT.......

Wierd heating issue

I'm going to go out in a bit to check on this, but I have no heat up here in New England. I turned it on this AM and it fired right up, but it shut itself down within 10 seconds and just blew cold. I shut it down and tried again with the same results. I checked the propane level with the level indicators and NO lights light up. Hot water heater lights, and fridge is on propane. Stove works. I'll have to check the % level on the tank when I go out. Could maybe a spider have done this? I haven't looked at the unit yet. I'll go out there in about an hour or so.....
I know it's not much to go on, but maybe one of you had the same problem?
Thanks.

RE: Rt 66 in Illinois

I say, "DO IT!!!!"
The wife and I took 7 months travelling from CT to Chicago and took as much of the original Route 66 (Although it doesn't "formally" exist)as we possibly could ending on the pier in Santa Monica, CA. We then headed South and then headed East roughly following I-10 to FL. Made it back to CT in March of this year. We had a ball! We not only did Rt 66, but took some awesome side trips, including Lincoln's Tomb and Museum, the Grand Canyon, Painted Desert, the Petrified Forest, and on and on. We found many city campgrounds, some even free with hookups. There are many state campgrounds along the way. Once we made it out west, you could stay pretty much anywhere in the desert as it was BLM land. We stayed at WalMarts, Home Depots, Cracker Barrels, Flying J's, Lowe's, VFW's, American Legions and many other places of business that are RV friendly.
Do your research on the web and if you want, PM me on what guides we used. There was only one problem we encountered and that was travelling to Oatman, AZ. We should have bypassed that part and took I-40. Going over that mountain pass got my wife a bit excited the higher we went. LOL When we got to Oatman, the locals were pretty surprised that we made the trip with our 30' Class C towing a Tracker.
I would do it again in a heartbeat. We met a lot of very interesting people from all over the world doing Route 66, including bicyclists from France, an older couple doing Route 66 in a 66 Merc convertible, a Vet doing it in a wheelchair, and many more. The wife kept a daily journal and we took over 5,000 pictures that we are still editing.
PM me and I can give you a few tips. There are many exciting adventures that can be had on 66 even though it no longer exists. Some of it is well marked and you will get lost trying to find the parts that are not so well marked, but in the end, you will have many precious memories.

RE: The Everglades - What to do?

DixieChick, the pontoon boat sounds good. I also found the the tram ride to Shark Valley.
If I had my way, I grab a canoe, get a permit and head for the backcountry with my lensatic compass, a topo map and my gps and stay for a couple of days. That wouldn't be fair to the wife though. She enjoys the flora and fauna type of tours and can walk on flat and smooth trails, as long as there are places she can rest. Anything exciting like an airboat is out for her. We both used to be very active until she had problems.

The Everglades - What to do?

What exactly is there to do in the Everglades for 2 old farts in their 60's? I'm in good health, my wife is mildly physically handicapped, so we are limited to her capabilities. I've often thought the Everglades would be something great, but as I do a flyover on Google Maps, there seems to be just the wild swamp. She couldn't do much there. She can't go on an airboat due to her panic attack episodes. Any ideas? I'd love to go, but don't want to if the wife'll be bored.

National Forests in Florida

Anyone know how much the camping fees are for the NF's in FL? I was hoping to spend a couple of weeks in the Osceola NF and kind of wanted to see how it'll affect the budget.

RE: Can I jumpstart the engine off the genny?

Yeah, I screwed it up. What I should have said was Genny Battery, I guess. Same as house battery, I guess. Didn't mean to make it confusing. I'm going to have some time tomorrow and plan on checking out all my heavy wires coming off the batteries. I'd like to just be able to hit a rocker switch to make it all work.

RE: Can I jumpstart the engine off the genny?

Sorry, Rocky. Just my opinion. I'd take my old Winnie back in a heartbeat, but the wife couldn't deal with the wet bath. It was pretty tight in there. But the cabinetry fit and finish was much better. I don't mind the Four Winds, as I've driven it cross country and from CT for FL several times, but I liked that old girl better.

RE: Can I jumpstart the engine off the genny?

Kendall, I thought about jumpers, but I'm about a foot too short. Genny and battery are on the wrong side from the engine battery. I suppose I could make a set that would work. I'd really like to go with a switch. I don't need it all that often, but it's a nice to have kind of thing.

RE: Can I jumpstart the engine off the genny?

Four Winds is a pretty cheap coach compared to the Winnies. I really miss that camper. She was a 1988 20' and had a wet bath which my wife absolutely HATED. She wanted bigger with a separate BR. Now I have to make all this work the way I want it to. I'm trying to replicate that switch somehow, but don't have any kind of schematic.
IMO, bigger is not always better......

Can I jumpstart the engine off the genny?

My old Winnie had a switch where I could hit it and link up to use the house battery to jump the engine battery with. Is there a way that could maybe hook up a solenoid, with a toggle off of the house batteries so that if I start the genny, I could let it charge the engine battery for a bit so as to start it? This is in a 1999 30' Four Winds. Has anyone done anything like this?

RE: Help! Blueberry Mountain Cake

THANK YOU ALL!!!! None of those were the ONE that I was looking for, but I thank you for those great sounding recipes. My wife finally found the one that I was looking for, but now I'm thinking I have to try all these new ones. I love blueberries. This is the one and I thought it turned out pretty well.
Mountain Blueberry Cake
10" oven
Bake @ 350
45-50 minutes
Grease inside of oven and dust with flour
Blend the following in a medium mixing bowl
1/2 Cup butter
1 1/2 Cup Sugar
Add and mix well:
2 Eggs
1 Cup buttermilk
Mix:
3 Cups flour
1 1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp salt
Dash of cloves
Dash of nutmeg
Need:
1 16oz can of large blueberries
Beat well for 5 minutes. Drain blueberries. Fold gently into batter. Pour batter into prepared oven. Sprinkle top with cinnamon and sugar if desired. Add heat and bake. Remove oven from bottom heat after 30 minutes. Continue cooking with top heat only. When done, remove from oven and cool
We did this at a primitive camp with no electric mixer. All mixing was done by our 10YO grand daughter . We did sprinkle sugar and cinnamon over the cake liberally, as we did this for breakfast. Nothing better than having this warm cake with hot coffee while camping for breakfast. We hope you enjoy it as much as we did.

RE: Help! Blueberry Mountain Cake

Nope. I've got that one memorized and have used it often, but thanks for trying, Donna. This one had only blueberries and was a lot like a coffee cake. I made it last year for breakfast and it was HUGE hit. I don't remember what I did with the printed copy and that hard drive was toast. I've been searching, searching and searching and.......

Help! Blueberry Mountain Cake

Help, please! I had a fabulous recipe for the Dutch Oven called Blueberry Mountain Cake. I thought I had saved the recipe on my computer, but my computer died and I couldn't recover anything off the hard drive. I don't remember where I got it, but I know I was web surfing when I found it. I've used all sorts of search terms trying to find it on Bing and Google, but anything I've found wasn't it. My wife says she'd recognize it if she saw it? I know we used canned blueberries, not pie filling and oh, was it good. If anyone has a DO blueberry Mountain Cake recipe or has a link to one, could you please post it? Thanks.
