RE: Why do I get "dues notices" in the mail all the time?

....We have reduced the amount of mailed renewal notices per member by 50% this year.We have reduced the lead time for mailing notices to 120 days prior to expiration..... It's not a matter of how 'far in advance' the renewals came in the mail, it was the fact that every one of them purposely where printed with had an earlier 'incorrect' date of expiration that did not match the 'actual' expiration date. We offer a 25% discount to members who opt into the automatic renewal process. So I guess this means that a long standing member who chooses not to foolishly give out personal credit card info on line for auto pay is punished and made to pay more for their membership? :R

RE: LP Detector problem

...... Looking at big whitey's post, I don't have any gas cans, but I do have a couple of small disposable propane cylinders (1 lb) for my barbecue grill in an outside storage compartment. Any chance they could be connected? No indication of leakage. YES THEY DO! Once they have been attached to a BBQ and then taken off they LEAK gas. I used only half the bottle once and took it off and stuck it in the bay of my MH. We were all sitting outside drinking and smoking and we all smelled propane! Inside of MH smelled like propane too. Took a few minutes but I found it was the bbq propane bottle leaking. Since then if I only use part of a propane bottle to cook something the darn bottle gets thrown out NEVER put in a bay. Ticks me off I can't use the whole bottle for a couple of BBQ's but sure can't have the damn thing leaking in the bays.:R Sometimes it's not enough for you to smell it at first but next time you take one off that's not empty smell the opening and you'll be tossing them too. Interestingly the Coleman ones leak more than the generic ones do.

RE: Do you use cell phones while backing into campsite?

My Dad taught me trailering and backing long rigs as a child and the one good point he made that has stuck with me was.... IF you have the option of coming from either direction to your point of backing, come from the direction where the trailer breaks towards the 'drivers' side when backing up. This makes it a piece of cake for even the newbiest of drivers backing in a trailer because they are using the drivers side mirror for visual of the actual rear of the trailer which makes it easier for them and they most likely will get it in one shot versus the other way. Hard to explain in words but anyone who trailers knows what I mean! :W

RE: Sorry state of fuel in North America

Good fuel, bad fuel. All I know for a fact is also consider the condition of the fuel holding tanks. Never put gas in your car after you've seen the tanker filling the tanks. I had 6 of my employees take their new company cars to the gas station across from the office to fuel up for a night out on Friday. One by one all night long I got calls that each one of my 6 cars were dead on the side of the road. The tanker had just filled the tanks, stirred up all the garbage on the bottom and I had to pay for 6 cars to be towed in that night that all needed new fuel filters that were plugged up tight.

RE: How to research the tiny city/county campgrounds

One untapped resource for camping that I discovered is local fair grounds. Almost every town has a local Fair Grounds and other than the dates of the Fair they are virtually empty. Most have full hookup camping sites for when the exhibitors are showing at the fair and the rate they charge is 'very' reasonable.:C

RE: Do you use cell phones while backing into campsite?

1. Two small red cones that fit under the front seat. 2. Get out, place one cone on each corner of the back of CG site. 3. Back in between the cones, put it in park unhook and have a nice QUIET cold one. 2 small red cones don't wave hands, jump up or down and don't yell at you while you are trying to back an RV in a CG site........ I love my 2 quiet red cones, I don't leave home without them! :B

RE: Primary Liability Insurance - Which States Require It?

My insurance company states what ever I pull attached to my vehicles is automatically covered under my vehicle insurance. I believe that's common practice with most policies and with 'reputable, established' auto insurance companies.

RE: Secuirty and Surveillance Systems?

Figured might be useful if kid gets lost, :H something goes missing, interesting animal visits etc. Not creepy; just curious. And safety minded. Could also get some entertaining Youtube fodder from it. IMHO it is creepy and just 'what' and 'who' would this camera be pointed at in a family CG where the sites are all close and other children playing all around?? Not quiet sure what I would do if I found out the camper next to me was sitting inside his MH watching a video camera pointed any where's near me or my family. Just saying.

RE: Why is it so hard to find a decent used unit???

This is the most frustrating purchase. I have been looking since late last summer. It has almost turned into a game to guess which side of the coach has delam & / or which corner of the cabover is leaking on the way over to look at one. My budget is $50 k. You would think that would find something but no luck. I bet I have looked at 25 units, possibly more. I found one that was good but was a few thousand off on price. If only I could have a do over on that one. I don't know how folks decide to buy one, go look at about 5, find the perfect one, & buy it. I am seriously considering adding $10 k, getting a new Sunseeker at RVDirect.com, & just taking the depreciation hit. I figure the fiberglass roof / Azdel walls are a good combination & then run it through yearly SealTech tests as insurance. I just want to get out & enjoy it before I get even more sour about the whole thing. Sorry for being such a downer but thanks for letting me vent... Be glad you're buying it used and can SEE the delam up front and center. Instead of paying full price for a new one and then YOU being the owner watching your new coach delam.:( It's a fact it happens. Does leaking windows cause it? Yes sometimes but it leaks inside the walls and you don't know it's leaking UNTIL it delams. It's a vicious circle. Are you looking at used RV lots or private parties? I quickly stop looking at dealerships for used. One thing that I think is a plus is most Rv'ers are anal about keeping their coach up and have the need to keep incredible records, and rarely have to dump their beat up RV at a dealership. Find a full timer or snowbird RV owner that has their RV for sale and you will usually find a clean kept up coach. Try escappes.com they have a forum where they post their coaches for sale. Most are full timers coming off the road. Good Luck you will find one, my first was used and gave me thousands of miles without repair or delam.:C

RE: A/C servicing

Clean the coils 'regularly, and in extreme humidity and heat keep the fan on low instead of high. And do NOT let anyone tell you you can add freon. My first RV the service guy said it needed freon and I let him do it. Fast forward a couple of years and I needed repair service to look at 'just the fan' and he opened the lid, slammed it closed and said he couldn't work on it because someone had tapped the line to add freon and that prevents him by law to work on the unit. With all the regulations in place regarding freon if he even just replaced the fan he would loose his license.

RE: LP Detector problem

My guess is was not your dogs 'breathing' but maybe something he ate that gave him gas! I've heard tell you can actually light 'that' kind of gas and make flames so it would make sense it could set an LP detector off! :B

RE: black water treatment tablets or liquid

I gave 'em up 3 years ago. Plain old H2O ever since, and no problems. Robbie I think it has a lot to do with location that has not been brought up on these threads and needs to be considered when helping others with what to do. Last year I experienced RV'ing in the south w/o hookups. Dreading having to move the MH to go to the State Park to dump I started pushing the limits of how long I could go before I had to break camp to dump. To do this I found I had to add 2 bottles of chems instead of one. So I know first hand whether they work or not! If you dry camp and don't dump every day in the blazing heat of the south......you'd be 'running' to the store for chemicals.:B

RE: Laptop or iPad?

I am on the road full time and do 'all' my finances on line with a laptop via a broadband connection. Ipads are ONLY wifi capable. Depends on which iPad one gets. There is an iPad model with no cellular connection and their are iPad models with cellular connection. The Verizon version of the New iPad has these cellular protocols. 4G LTE (700 MHz)3; CDMA EV-DO Rev. A (800, 1900 MHz); UMTS/HSPA/HSPA+/DC-HSDPA (850, 900, 1900, 2100 MHz); GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz) If you want one that has the usb ports for mobile broadband internet access you have to buy the one that costs $500.00 plus. :R I can buy laptops with 100X the memory and is secure internet capable all day long for that kind of money. So for me it's a NO on the ipad. None of the iPads have a USB port. All of them can use USB via a dock connector to USB adapter cable. The ipad is nothing more than a large Iphone, and I already have one of those. There are apps unique to the iPad and many iPhone apps have been enhanced to take advantage of the larger "real estate" of the iPad.Tom Thank you for clarifying the capabilities! Best Buy needs YOU as an employee! I have spent countless trips to computer stores inquiring about what the ipad can do getting different answers each time.:R I do have a question though. If you buy the more expensive Ipad that has the cellular connection. You HAVE to use that connection AND pay a monthly fee to the provider right? Don't get me wrong I would love to have that new little toy but here is my problem with it: I already have a sprint mobile broadband I use on my laptop. From my understanding the IPad as it is designed now will not accept my usb mobile broadband. So I would have to pay for 'their' installed cellular connection. I don't want to have to pay for 2 separate internet providers every month, just to add the new IPad to my stash of new electronics! :B

RE: If you dont travel with the FW tank full???

It depends on the design of your RV. In RV's where the fresh water and the fuel tank are located 'behind' the rear axle. Fill both of those tanks up plus all what you have inside and most are over weight on the rear axles and all the weight is behind the axle which will affect the tongue weight on TT's. Truck stops. All truck stop lanes have a fresh water hose. You have to read the sign though I have stopped at some that say water 'not' potable. I carry 1/3 for bathroom calls etc. while traveling. Fill up if needed near destination.

RE: Why do I get "dues notices" in the mail all the time?

Hmmm, GS actually 'pays' for unscrupulous direct mailings that nets them a 'loss in revenue' from dropped memberships BECAUSE of their direct mail policy. What's wrong with this picture? Their financial history tells the story! Think bank failures, golden parachutes and the market crash, AGI was one of THE biggest ones, only thing is they owned waaay too many companies so the gov had to bail them out.:R GS ~ Affinity ~ AGI all one in the same. "The FDIC estimates Affinity's failure will cost its deposit insurance fund $254 million." "On August 15, 2009, AGI failed to make a $6.2 million interest payment to bondholders, and Standard & Poors subsequently lowered AGI's credit rating to D. Standard & Poor reported that they had taken this view because bondholders will be receiving less than par value for the notes and because of the company's highly leveraged financial profile, weak operating outlook, and limited liquidity given the near-term maturity of its senior credit facility. In May 2011, AGI announced that it was changing the company's name to Good Sam Enterprises." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Good_Sam_Enterprises So it's no surprise how they do business. :W

RE: Verizon kills unlimited data plans for existing subscribers

Bought my Sprint mobile broadband in 2004 unlimited data. That all said the software needs to be updated BUT if I update I will loose my unlimited data plan. They dang well know this and my broadband is now unstable and pop ups saying to upgrade, throttling during peaks times, etc.......I'll wait till the damn thing dies completely and then change providers. IMHO with the onset of smartphones they will be shooting themselves in the foot if they keep poking the bears that have contracts on mobile broadband that will be expiring soon and do not renew and they watch their revenues drop like a ton of bricks. In a year or so when all this happens we'll be seeing all kinds of data perks to get us back.

RE: Why do I get "dues notices" in the mail all the time?

Funny, I am a GS member and have their emergency road service, and I don't get junk mail. Perhaps that's the solution... I opted out and it did stop the 'junk' mail but it doesn't stop the fake renewal notices. At one time I had their extended warranty and their ERS services. Certainly not a small pittance for yearly premiums yet, my obligatory comment ~ You can not access any of the RV'ing services, trip planning, campsites info, etc., on their website unless you pay an "additional" fee just to use the website. Barring Rush Limbaugh, GS is the ONLY other website I know of on the internet that you have to PAY to view it even though you are a paying member of their services. :R

RE: Why do I get "dues notices" in the mail all the time?

This is marketing. Did you ever drop a magazine or newspaper? They do the same thing. Good Sam's website did have a place to check you didn't want mailings that don't apply to you. We did this several years ago and our mail dropped quit a bit. No it is not "marketing". It is criminal fraud. To bill someone for goods or services that they have not contracted for is a crime. You are under absolutely no obligation to respond, much less send them a check. Any firm that persists in this type of behavior is probably on its way down the financial tubes to be so desperate. GS/CW could terminate this practice tomorrow but too many people just blindly pay every bill that comes in the mail and GS/CW knows it, exploits that fact and rakes in the money. Don't tell me you can just "opt out" as it often does no good and the junk mail solicitations and fraudulent billings just keep on a coming. Been there done that. :S They ALSO will send renewals notices marked: "URGENT you are not covered, your membership has expired, fill out send ASAP to be covered" to you when you ARE a member. BUT, your membership is NOT due. I personally find this to be the lowest of lowest direct mail.:R I full time and depending where I am at, sometimes my friends pick up my mail, they see this URGENT notice and frantically try to contact me regarding this irresponsible non professional direct mail. I just don't get it why they want to tick off a paying member with this? Do they think that the member is stupid enough to fill it out and send money when it is not even due? I wonder how many double annual payments they 'do' get out of members with this practice and pocket it?
