RE: Best route thru ON from MB to QC borders?

Beware. I believe it's still construction season in Montreal. If so, there is no way to avoid traffic jams, since you pretty much have to go though there if you stay on the Canadian side. There's been a lot of TV coverage lately about the rehabilitation of the (I think) Champlain bridge over the St. Lawrence & its effect on traffic.

RV Dump Notice (No Chemicals) in Ontario

When I dumped at Esker Lakes Prov' Park on Monday there was a notice from Enviroment Canada saying that if you use chemicals in your black tank you aren't permitted to dump. I've never seen this notice at Halfway, Arrowhead, Algonquin or Silent Lake. Is this a new development?

RE: Recent Border Crossing

Kopit, I'm wondering if the CBSA had some reason to question the bishop? I've never been asked if I had a laptop w/ me crossing @ Detroit/Windsor or Buffalo/Ft. Erie.

RE: Best route thru ON from MB to QC borders?

We drove down from Kirkland Lake to Huntsville on Monday. Some construction south of NL and rough pavement south of Latchford. The 4 laning work in the Burks Falls area is a minor slow section but pavement is good.

RE: Missing honeymooners on camping trip didn't know they were missing

pretty bad pictures!!!!!! Another couple missing. What about the elderly couple that went missing last year? Still no news about the Mcanns. The RCMP should be embaressed. Might as well use the keystone cops. Not to apologize for the RCMP, but the McCann's RV was found in a pretty desolate part of the country. I's not like they made a wrong turn in the suburbs. There's been cases in Ontario where hunters in the fall find human remains months or years after a person disappears. Hunters and or hikers often are in areas most of the general public avoids.

RE: Trailer flips on Queen Elizabeth Way-Toronto bound

Was the accident on the Burlington side? No it was on the Hamilton side of the bay, near the exit for Eastport Dr in the Toronto bound lanes, this wuld have been right before the skyway. Oh OK, I thought maybe that the accident was on the north side & maybe the driver had "issues" going downhill. We'll probably never hear what happened.

RE: Trailer flips on Queen Elizabeth Way-Toronto bound

I saw the report of the traffic backup last Friday, but no details. Was the accident on the Burlington side? I've never trailered over the bridge, but am familiar w/ it. You are correct in mentioning the wind being an issue as occasionally the bridge is closed to trucks due to high winds.

RE: Best route thru ON from MB to QC borders?

No problems getting diesel at the Nairn Centre truck stop (north side of highway). In the Sault, there are Husky truck stops on both the north & east ends of the city. The east end location may be easier for an EB vehicle as it's on the south side of the highway. If you're going to take the bypass around Sudbury (thru downtown isn't the most direct) there isn't any services along it. Just as you get back on the TCH east of Sudbury, before Coniston, there's a Husky truck stop. It's on the north side of the highway. North Bay is a bit tricky IIRC, because most of the truck stops are on Hwy 11 north & south of the city. On 17 you might be dealing w/ "regular" gas stations. Between Mattawa & Deep River gas availabity can be an issue. In Pembroke there's an Irving Big Stop @ the jct of highways 17 & 41.

RE: Best route thru ON from MB to QC borders?

Since you asked specifically about gas and camping in Ontario my preference would be Hwy #17 all the way. The only area I would be a little careful with for fuel would be from White River or Wawa down through Lake Superior Provincial Park. Fill up at one of those places and you are good to go. There is a large gas station on the east side of the highway just south of the entrance to Pancake Bay Provincial Park so don't worry about having to make it all the way to S.S. Marie. Yes, the stretch of 11 between Nipigon & Hearst is a bit on the lonely side. From Longlac to Hearst it's 230 klicks of "nothing". If someone should decide to take 11, I'd gas up in Nipigon then Hearst. When I was snowmobiling in the Greenstone area in '09, I found that the gas station in Geraldton (a Husky) was directly on the highway. In Longlac you turn off the highway onto a service road that parallels the main road.

RE: Trailer flips on Queen Elizabeth Way-Toronto bound

Good to hear that everyone was OK. In '99 we saw a similiar result on I-75 north of Atlanta. An S Blazer was being pulled on to a roll back & you could see the remains of the TT beside the median divider. A couple of years ago A family from that part of Ontario has a crash on I-77 near Wytheville VA : Click Click 2 I wonder how the "expert" that commented knew the trailer had suffered wood rot? I wonder if the TT was too big for the Envoy in this situation?

RE: Best route thru ON from MB to QC borders?

If you're not interested and/or can't enter the US, using Hwy 11 to North Bay rather than Hwy 17 is 40 klicks longer. Flatter & more desolate/less scenic on 11 though. I've driven all 3 routes (w/o a TT) & would use the US route.

Travelaire Question

I have been following the history of Glendale RV since 1977. Back in 1986 I had the opportunity to meet the original founder and owner of Glendale, Reginald Lever Thorn. Reg was a builder and at one point had 9 different manufacturing plants across Canada and an international operation in Australia. (This operation is still operating as Glendale Homes Pty. Limited) Due to rapid growth and expansion of Glendale through the 1960's it all hit the wall in the early 1970's with the gasoline shortages and high prices and an economic slowdown that hit North America. Sounds familiar eh? As a result Reg Thorn and Glendale had taken on too much and was on the brink of collapse. Morgan Firestone came along and bought Glendale @10 cents on the dollar and re-engineered a slimmer and more efficient company. The result was the sell off all plants but the original complex at 145 Queen St., Strathroy , Ontario. The newly formed Firan-Glendale Corporation focused on only RV production from this one factory. Glendale did a complete turnaround and became a leading force in the RV industry. In the late 1980's Glendale acquired Travelaire Industries in Alberta, Canada, Barth Motor Coaches in the US and expanded it's base both in Canada and the US. The motorhome plant in the US was short lived and closed it's doors in the late 1990's. A Travelaire plant in Strathroy was closed as a result of Glendale moving production to their Queen St. plant just around the corner from the Travelaire facility. Over the years from the 1975 purchase of Glendale from Reg Thorn, Glendale has changed company names several times from the Glendale Corporation to Firan-Glendale Corporation then Firan Corporation back to Glendale International etc. etc. Why?? Restructuring, amalgamations etc. In 2003 Morgan Firestone stepped down as Chairman and CEO and sold his interests to the exisiting board because of health issues. The new Glendale International Ltd was a result of this sale and the board taking control. This board was was responsible for placing Glendale into voluntary bankruptcy. My guess after reading all the different articles on this was for personal gain and getting out while Glendale had no long term debt and had positive cash flow and lots of cash and assets. Rather then ride out the slowdown as they have done numerous times in the past 60 years of it's history, they decided to pull the plug. Very sad, as Glendale was one of Canada's best RV manufacturers employing hundreds of very skilled and talented employees supported by a long list of loyal dealers throughout North America. Reg Thorn and Morgan Firestone would be rolling in their graves to hear of all this news! Reg passed away in 2004 and Morgan in early 2009. Ironically Glendale was to celebrate it's 60th Anniversary in 2010! From humble beginnings in a barn building house trailers on the "Glendale Curve Road" in London Ontario in 1950.... to a leading international RV innovator and manufacturer......it's all over! Thankfully Glendale produced a top notch unit and for those existing Glendale owners they can take comfort in this fact. Up here in Canada we still have units that were built in the 60's and the 70's still seen travelling the highways and parked in campgrounds from coast to coast! Lou A Glendale Enthusiast since 1977 A friend reminded me awhile back of the Travelaire trailers that were built in a plant in Oshawa, Ontario years ago. Is this the same Travelaire as mentioned in the quote?

RE: Emily Provincial Park - Ontario

Archer thanks for adding the info about the flooding. Some of the Trent lakes are very nice while others (Scugog anyone?) are quite weedy.

RE: Wow, Canada is really expensive!

The other excuse for the higher prices in Canada vs the US is the smaller market means they don't sell enough product to cover their costs.

RE: TransCanadian Hwy Sault St Marie to PEI

I'm not sure what Lil' Kopit's route thru Quebec is like for services, but between Hearst & Longlac on Hwy 11, there's a stretch (I think around 250 klicks) w/ no services. Hwy 17 isn't as bad (during the summer months).

I've never camped there, but I'm familiar w/ the area. The park is at the south end of Pigeon Lake on the river. I have heard that the water quality isn't what you'd call crystal clear.

RE: Roads in Canada

After having been taken on some "interesting" roads by our Garmin GPS (like through downtown Toledo OH hauling our 5th wheel!) I always check a second source (such as a road atlas or Streets and Trips) to ensure that the the route suggested is appropriate. Twice in the past copuple of months Garmin's City Navigator has routed me onto roads that aren't even suitable for a 4WD. The one road I wasn't familiar w/ I had to turn around due to it being flooded by beavers (& no township maintenance). The 2nd road I was quite familiar w/ & avoided the area. Has anyone ever contacted Garmin about these "issues"? I'm wondering if the Canadian couple that got stranded in northern Idaho, fell victim to this? The road where they found the van looked marginal @ best.

Esker Lakes Prov' Park (Ontario)

Has anyone camped @ this park east of Kirkland Lake? I was last there in '82 & don't remember a lot about it. I worked on the boundary as a JR in '79.

RE: TransCanadian Hwy Sault St Marie to PEI

If I may, I would suggest another little detour along the way. When you get to North Bay along Highway 17 you might want to consider heading south on highway 11 to Huntsville (approx 60 miles, most of it 4 lanes), then East on Highway 60 which will take you through Algonquin Park and will hit Highway 17 again at Renfrew west of Ottawa. Algonquin Park has numerous RV campgrounds and is a beautiful place to visit for a day or a week. cheers and have a great day. Just a heads up there is construction between Burk's Fall's and Powassan. Not sure if it affects traffic on the current route (4 laning & bypassing of the towns).

RE: northern ontario -port huron mich

You might have to pull into Sarnia to find any services. There is NOTHING along the 402. Are you heading along the bottom of Lake Huron or heading east towards the London area? Just east of London on the 401 there are Flying J, Husky & Fifth Wheel truck stops.
