RE: Laptop or iPad?

Thank you for clarifying the capabilities! Best Buy needs YOU as an employee! I have spent countless trips to computer stores inquiring about what the ipad can do getting different answers each time.:R
I do have a question though.
If you buy the more expensive Ipad that has the cellular connection.
You HAVE to use that connection AND pay a monthly fee to the provider right?
Don't get me wrong I would love to have that new little toy but here is my problem with it:
I already have a sprint mobile broadband I use on my laptop. From my understanding the IPad as it is designed now will not accept my usb mobile broadband. So I would have to pay for 'their' installed cellular connection. I don't want to have to pay for 2 separate internet providers every month, just to add the new IPad to my stash of new electronics! :B
If possible, you should go to an Apple store to discuss Apple products. The sales people there are knowledgeable and don't try to sell you anything, except they will offer you AppleCare if you buy a product that can be covered.
As tatest states, if you have the iPad with cellular, you do not have to activate it. And you can activate it on a month-to-month basis. One reason for getting the more expensive model and not activating it is to get GPS, which is not on the non-cellular iPads.
As you describe your USSB Sprint mobile broadband, I don't think you can use it directly with the iPad. However, purchase a router for the USB modem and both your laptop and an iPad can connect, at the same time.

RE: confused about topsail NC and surf city??

Since it is "over a bridge," I guess he was referring to Blackbeard's Treasure Campground. (Not much of a website.)
It is on the island, but not on the beach; it is on the intercostal waterway.
HollyRidge/Surf City are about 30 miles north of Wilmington, on Hwy 17.

RE: Autopista Insurance

playaboy,
As noted at the bottom of your post, I added the quote. I used the Woodall's portal, which is not having the issues that the RV.Net portal is having with some characters.
The characters that caused the issue are the " around "maliciously" and "si es correcto" along with the fraction.
Using RV.Net, If i retype the quotes and change the fraction to .5, the post will go through. So, it appears that the RV.Net portal can't handle "smart quotes" and fractions, but the other portals can.

RE: Test post

The quotes before and after "maliciously" and "si es correcto" and the 1/2 fraction caused the issue. Retyping the quotes and changing the 1/2 to .5 removed the problem.

RE: Test post

How it all ended up.
My Spanish is very limited and even more so on the phone. I was having difficulty understanding exactly what the insurance company wanted. I wrote an email to Inbursa using the contact address on there web site. I also copied the Arco Norte.
Because the rear sliding window was "maliciously" broken, the insurance company requires a report filed with the prosecutor, at Public Ministry in Tula, before they can pay out a claim. Once I filed the report they would pay my claim. There was never a question about coverage. I explained how I was a tourist in transit and how difficult and expensive it would be for me to return and do that. I also told them that I had ordered a new replacement window, 2380 pesos installed, and that I was having it installed tomorrow. Because my circumstances, the insurance company decided that they would waive the requirement for the report with the prosecutor and that I should take my receipt, factura, to the local Inbursa office in Queretaro for reimbursement.
I took my truck to the body shop this morning. The sliding window they ordered was not the correct size. One of workers drove with me, 2 blocks, to the auto glass shop and explained the situation. They said that they would need 1.5 hours to fix it. When I returned to body shop, the worker and I walked back to the glass shop and picked up my truck. Back at the body shop I asked for a factura for the insurance company. They gave me the bill, 350 pesos total. I asked if this was correct. They smiled and said "si es correcto". My eyes must have bugged out of my head, I was shocked. I paid and left a nice tip.
When I got back to Robt65’s house, I took a close look at the window. I believe the glass shop repaired the broken pane in the slider instead of the whole unit. The tinting matches perfectly.
I just emailed Inbursa and let them know what I paid. I told them, for that amount, I would not be seeking any money from them and to close the claim.
The people at Inbursa could have played hardball and stuck to the rules but they were willing to bend them and accommodate me.
The body shop could have sent me on my way when they had the wrong window or could have charged me the full estimated price.
Instead, everybody was extremely helpful. If there were any problems, it was me and my lack of Spanish.
This is one of the reasons I love living in Mexico.

RE: Test post

The (at least first) problem character is the " for "maliciously", which I have no trouble typing here.

I'm surprised that it is viewable. Enough so that I'll try to post it again through RV.Net.
Another attempt to post through RV.Net failed.
In the following posts, I will try to isolate the problem.

Test post

The quoted material below cannot be posted via the RV.Net portal, but can be posted through the other portals. Question, will it be viewable through RV.Net. The post is interesting in that it does not contain a %, which is know to cause the RV.Net portal problems. I thought it could be the fraction in the text, but removing it does not clear the issue.

RE: Laptop or iPad?

I am on the road full time and do 'all' my finances on line with a laptop via a broadband connection.
Ipads are ONLY wifi capable.
Depends on which iPad one gets. There is an iPad model with no cellular connection and their are iPad models with cellular connection. The Verizon version of the New iPad has these cellular protocols.
4G LTE (700 MHz)3; CDMA EV-DO Rev. A (800, 1900 MHz); UMTS/HSPA/HSPA+/DC-HSDPA (850, 900, 1900, 2100 MHz); GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz)
If you want one that has the usb ports for mobile broadband internet access you have to buy the one that costs $500.00 plus. :R I can buy laptops with 100X the memory and is secure internet capable all day long for that kind of money. So for me it's a NO on the ipad.
None of the iPads have a USB port. All of them can use USB via a dock connector to USB adapter cable.
The ipad is nothing more than a large Iphone, and I already have one of those.
There are apps unique to the iPad and many iPhone apps have been enhanced to take advantage of the larger "real estate" of the iPad.

RE: need help connecting satellite to system

2 Retired,
I reduced the widths of your pictures to the forum's recommended maximum of 640 pixels. I deleted the attempt to post a third picture. The third picture would have been identical to the second one. It did not display because it had too many img tags.
This thread is moving from Forum Technical Support to Technology Corner.
