RE: over heated & Broke down, Now in Prescott Az

Hi Mr. Wizard,
Stop beating yourself up. The damage takes just seconds to happen. Second guessing will do nothing at this point.

RE: Used Class C--maybe

Hi Coolmon42,
Don't forget you loose the space in the cab as far as living space is concerned.
Not all wheel base distances are the same. Simply find a unit and then ask questions. There are 158 inch and 176 inch I think--but I could be wrong. Mine is 176" and 28'5". My previous unit was 176" and 27' and was MUCH easier to drive (as in far less fatiguing).
I use my C in extreme cold so I do NOT want a slide, and even if I did not have that requirement I still think I'd avoid a slide.
Why 26 feet? Because there are LOTS of used units in that size. The more there are--the lower the price.
Thanks, those were about the conclusions I had reached. I'm thinking a 22-24 foot would suit me.
How can I tell how long the wheel base is? Are they all the same?

RE: can 30 amps run 2 13500 ACs

Hi,
Measure the units with a kill-a-watt meter? (the Dometic I have comes in at only 960 watts--30 amps provides 3600 watts).
So long as the compressors don't both start at exactly the same time it may work. I'd certainly try it and monitor the voltage with both units running. A tiny bit of energy could be saved by using the low fan setting.
It would also be possible to use a delay switch so the fan spins up--and then the compressor starts. Apparently some newer units allow this to be programed in.

RE: Tankless water heaters

Hi thebutler,
If you are in a campground and have a water hook up showers could be quite long--as long as your propane tank has fuel.
On the other hand, you could go to the bath house and shower at the campground's expense. It is not quite as convenient.
Is the existing water heater a 6 gallon or a 10? My ten after being unplugged will provide water for 8 minutes before reaching lukewarm status. That is straight hot water. At 2.5 gallons per minute that is about 20 gallons--or nearly 1/3 of the 66 gallons I have on board.
Of course, if I were plugged in and running the propane that time line would be extended. Perhaps Jeannie can tell us how long a ten gallon Atwood electric/gas would last going full out. Recovery time on gas is 30 minutes, and 90 minutes on electric.
If your wife likes scalding hot showers, she may find the demand heater water too cool.

Hi Mr. Wizard,
DRAT. I had hoped it would be something simple.
Is there a campground with cabins near by?
Rent a car and stay at a cabin?

RE: Solar help

Hi,
I'd check the electrolyte levels, and check to see if the battery bank is gassing or not. SMK had a problem with his system.
Do you have a temperature probe to go with the controller?

RE: Used Class C--maybe

Hi,
A small class C is far more affordable than a class B.
Try to limit yourself to no more than 26 feet with the 176" wheel base.
Fold out beds are not likely to be very comfy. Fine for a week end but not so fine for full time.

RE: On Demand Hot Water Systems

Hi Jeannie,
Glad to see you are alive and as usual so helpful. I'm glad to here there are more tankless RV rated units. I still won't be buying one, even if the unit I have fails.

RE: On Demand Hot Water Systems

Hi RVUSA,
Well that happened to be today, so the ambient temperature was 22 C. I was using the water to rinse my black water tank and I prefer to use hot water for that via the online pump.
There is no question that the "on demand" type work and that they use less propane. Folks may find the temperature lower than they are used to especially when the hot water finally arrives at the shower head.
What I *really* want is one of the units that uses waste heat from the engine. But those are expensive to retro fit.
It would be expensive for me to retro fit an on demand unit, so if my heater dies it likely will be replaced with a clone of itself.

RE: Slide out again? Help...

Hi,
The slide motors draw a fair number of amps. It is beyond the capacity of most converters to provide that many amps. Hence the battery power is needed.

RE: What did you do to your Class C MH today???

Hi,
Installed a thermostat on the external fridge fans I had installed last summer. It sure is a relief to have them able to cycle.
Any suggestions as to the temperature I should set it to cut in at?

RE: On Demand Hot Water Systems

Hi,
There are choices. So far there is one RV rated on demand propane heater and no electric fired units.
I prefer to use the campground's electricity to heat my water, rather than my propane. The ten gallon tank in the RV takes 8 minutes before the water becomes lukewarm--and that is with the RV unplugged. That same run time uses about 20 gallons of water. I only have 66 on board.

RE: Color Code and Solar Install

Hi,
It does not matter so long as accurate records of what is done. Without a permanent record trouble shooting may be a nightmare.
I'd find out what was used in my RV and use the same coding.

RE: New Battery Question..

Hi Mike,
It depends how you camp.
If boondocking, squeeze in as many amp-hours as is possible without exceeding the weight allowance for the compartment.
If electric hook ups are always used then a single 12 volt battery will meet the needs.
Been seeing alot on here lately about one 12v vs two 6v batteries. I need a new battery for my Coyote hybrid and wasn't sure what to go with. Looking for pros and cons. Thanks in advance.

RE: New Battery Question..

Hi Keith,
Those must be mighty small 12 volt batteries.
Here would be the numbers for me:
twin six volt batteries would total 232 amp-hours @ twelve volts.
Triple twelve volt batteries would total 375 amp-hours @ twelve volts.
My old RV had twin twelve volts (total 250 amp-hours) that are still meeting the needs of the new owner. They are 10 years old.
Two 6-volt batteries gives you the power of 3 12 volt batteries. The other advantage of the 6's is that they can withstand more abuse.

RE: does solar play well with a converter?

Hi SMK,
ummm it was 7 a.m. and there was no more energy to be had from the sun. I had hoped to redo at solar noon today but it is overcast and rain is in the forecast--and that will be so for the next four days. The output from solar did double.
I don't understand why Blue Sky stayed at 2 amps at all voltages.
With a 40 amp load I would think it would ramp up or is 2a the max at 7a?

RE: does solar play well with a converter?

Hi John,
The controller is the Blue Sky 3024di BSE 3024iL manual and BSE 3024iL addendum.
The panels are Unisolar US-64 US-64 wired in series parallel for a PV voltage of 33 and nominal wattage of 256 on a non tilt install.
The batteries are seven Marine style batteries from Walmart rated at 125 amp-hours each in two banks one of four the other of three. The bank of four is now 6 years old and sat unused (and neglected, mea culpa) for three years. The bank of three is from September of 2009.
The converter is the Progressive Dynamics 9140A
