RE: Java on my computer question??? (UPDATE)

Most of the "javascript void"s are either because of your browser security settings, or from just having an old operating system that can't be updated with the latest browser (which now includes XP). Disabling or lowering your settings concerning javascript can put your computer at risk for virus' and especially malware.

RE: Ticks!

Here's a question maybe someone can answer for me. How come they make products that either kill or repel fleas & ticks, and some even mosquitos for dogs but they don't have anything for humans? Being a mosquito & black fly magnet as well as a great tick and flea attractor I would love something I could put on once a month or even weekly. And the answer is: Check out the side effects of these topicals and chewables we give our dogs. Besides skin irritation, they include liver and kidney damage, cancer, infertility, and nervous system damage.

RE: Funeral Edict?

I personally witnessed two accidents involving funeral processions, BOTH of which resulted in fatalities. It's not like 100 years ago......there is way too much traffic now, and speeds are too high to safely have these processions. The OP's confusion and indecision could have had the same result. My personal belief is that it's time to stop the practice altogether, and just have people meet at the cemetery at a predetermined time, rather than drive there in a procession. I might agree with exemptions for police or military funeral processions, but then all other traffic should be blocked. Just my opinion. I agree. Sometime during my travels last two weeks, S. Illinois or Missouri, there was a funeral procession literally 5 miles long going 35mph on an interstate. If I had to reach an exit ramp from the inner lane, I would have no problem signaling, honking the horn and cutting thru the line.

RE: Light-Proofing Bedroom

I sleep days, so for the trailer's 3 bedroom windows I went to Lowes and got room darkening rollup shades. I had them cut 2-3" more than the width of the windows for an overlap. With drapes covering those overlaps and the valance at the top, when I pull down the shades at noon it's instant nighttime.

RE: Funny thing checking on airline tickets

Why not drive? RT with a car getting at least 20mpg is $110. No waiting. No check in. No lost luggage. No stress. Even renting from Enterprise, a Hyundai Accent that gets 40mpg, then filling up only once ($40) RT is still cheaper than flying AR to IA.

RE: Security for the RV -- Southern Style

Obviously you don't understand how the perp's mind works. I had a victim that tried something similar. RV, car, home all trashed and fires started because the two guys that broke in were mad that they couldn't find any guns. When apprehended, they used more colorful language and blamed the homeowner for false advertising.

RE: RV Insurance??

Go get a quote online at your insurance company's website. You'll probably find a quote for a new policy will be 25-40% cheaper than adding a vehicle to an existing policy. If so, and your happy with your ins. co, sign up for the new quote, then cancel the existing policy.

RE: Gas Prices X.XX AND 9/10th

For gasoline, the 9/10s thing goes back to the gas wars between stations on all four corners during the 50s and 60s. Sometimes a gallon would be just 10cents.

RE: Lease a new car???

Thanks for all the comments. I'm glad I had a week to think about. Dealers don't like buyers to think that long. I decided a lease is not for me at this time. Even tho I can buy additional miles up front, I'd still be paranoid about miles used everytime I drive it for the next 3 years. I'd also be paranoid about any nicks and scratches even tho most would probably be normal wear and tear. Unlike back East where everything is paved including the alleys and cowpaths, here in SoCal half the roads (mostly private land and public 'County not maintained') are still dirt and rocks. And I just can't see me driving up desert washes to camp in a leased vehicle. And then there's the increased insurance required for liabilty (100000/300000), comprehensive, and collision. My 6 month auto insurance would go from $212 to almost $600. So I'll be back looking for a 8-10yo CRV that will fit into a personal bank loan that will be paid off in 24 months.

RE: Would you do anything different?

So, who is giving you a choice? Company? Doctor? Yourself? Sounds like you have a job requiring a lot of standing. Also sounds like a temporary disability. You would have to go about 10 rounds with the folks at SS to convince them otherwise. I would state to the employer it is a temporary disablity, and request a light duty assignment. Later if it becomes a permanent disability, you'd have both feet in the door. You probably will have to goto the company doctor. Under the American Disabities Act you have a right to request the company do all it can to reasonably accommodate you. There are attorneys that specialize in ADA, but you shouldn't need one to come to an agreement with HR.

RE: Lease a new car???

Found a great site for an auto lease tutoral leaseguide.com Also, I took a look on swapalease.com and saw 2010/11 CRVs with leases all over $400mo. Site makes me feel like jumping at my $239mo (actually $269mo + tax) lease deal from Honda. Thanks for everyone's comments.

RE: Gas Prices

I keep hearing on the news how prices keep going up at the pump. Actually, around San Diego and Riverside counties in California, they have been going down for the last 10 days. After peaking at $4.49, they have dribbled down to $4.31 and some stations doing $4.23.

Lease a new car???

I'm thinking of leasing a new Honda CRV for 36 months for $269mo. With buying, the 60mo payment would be 40% more per month. Any horror stories or pitfalls I need to be aware of? I'm aware of the mileage limits on leased cars, but that doesn't concern me too much since I'll most likely buy it or trade it in for a new one at the end of the lease. I know the CRV will worth more than $15,000 California retail 3 years from now, so it looks like a good deal. My old beater is dying and not worth fixing anymore. I'm getting to old to be messing around with someone else's headache, and buying another 12yo vehicle that needs money put in it. Average mileage for 10-12yo vehicles in California is 160,000mi. It would be nice to finally have a new and trouble free vehicle that gets good gas mileage in my old age.

RE: home security?

We always let our neighbors on each side and across the street know when we're gone. They keep watch on our place and we keep watch on their place when they're gone. Take in their papers, mail, water the flowers in the summer, etc. It's just the neighborly thing to do. One winter a neighbor was in the Bahamas and we had a snow storm. I used the snowblower on their drive after I was done with mine just to give their place the usual occupied look. Nobody in our cul-de-sac ever had a problem. Do you REALLY know your neighbor? 12% of all home burglarys are committed by neighbors and freinds.

RE: Locked In... Be honest

I'm familar with the place. What's needed is night security, but not in the budget, and probably will never be. Hard to get someone reliable that will be a bouncer for the community's spoiled alcoholic teens and 20-somethings that turn a campground into a rave event. What happens is one 18-21yo female gets a campsite, then starts a text tree. Later 10s to 100s of kids are in and out all night drunk driving shuttling others in and out and every camper within a 1/2 mile is calling the sheriff about the noise. Since these parties are usually Fri and Sat nights, due to priority calls, by the time the sheriff duputies get there at 4am, most have left and it takes until 6am to process who's left. Gate codes/keys won't work since the original site renter makes sure the gate is kept open. Tire shedders won't work since plywood renders them useless. Sheriff and fire has a key to the gate, but I also would never stay in a place that locks you in at night. It's a warning that it is not a safe and pleasant place to visit, much less stay overnight. BTW, the gangs from Hemet use this place to "rest and relax."

RE: Totally off subject: Lasik Surgery

I know this has absolutely nothing to do with rving, I am just wondering if any of you guys have had lasik surgery on your eyes. I am 30 and my eye doctor says i am a good candidate for it. I have a price of $3600 for both eyes just trying to hear some of your thoghts about it. When you say "eye doctor," do you mean optometrist or opthamolagist? When you go for lasik, you will sign a waiver acknowleging the chances of a retina detachment as well as other complications. Goto a real "eye doctor" first, an opthamolagist, and really see if you are a "good candidate." If you have lattice degeneration (thin retinas) your chances of having a retina detachment increase significantly. Having lasik can also cloud the lens (cataracts) sooner as you age. If you have undiagnosed glaucoma or other disorders of your macula and optic nerve, lasik can be disasterous to your eyes.

RE: Would you stay at a shuttered SP for free as a caretaker?

The State Park in question is Providenve Mountains SP which includes Mitchell Caverns. Letters to the CA Assembly for a resident volunteer are a waste of time since CA Parks and Recreation does have a camphost and volunteer programs. It's up to the Ranger in charge if a park utilizes the programs. For Mitchell Caverns, if a resident volunteer were to live there, here are the problems. The Park was closed because the water system is broken. You would have to truck iin your own water. maybe you can do it when you go shopping. Shopping is an all day and night deal driving at least 200-300 of miles round trip. Youi will have to truck in your own gas for your generator. Same 200-300 miles RT if you want electricity. Solar might work for a lot of things, but not when you need the AC on 24 hourds a day, April thru October. Don't count on the State to be like Motel6 and "leave the light on." If you need emergency help from the Sheriff, Fire, or Parmedics, that help will most likely be the same 200-300 miles away. If that help is for yourself, and an airship is dispatched, expect a bill of at least $25,000. Any calls to CHP (since I-40 is relatively close by), will be transferred to local juristictions. CHP will not trod on Federal juristictions. You will be living within a Federal Preserve. If you expect to be the Marshall of the Wild Wild West, think again. You are not allowed guns in any State park, open or closed. If you shoot one or even threaten someone with a weapon, including trespassers, you will goto jail and the tresspassers and vandals will take all your stuff before you post bail. And don't forget, there is spotty cell service, you will pay big bucks each month for satellite internet, TV, phone service, and if you don't vacumn and dust several times a day, you will be covered in thick layers of dust on and into everything, even with the windows closed. Expect to replace electronics frequently if you don't take them apart and clean them regularly...like TVs, DVD/DVR players. You might have neighbors at the primitive campground in Mojave Preserve. There are camphost sites there, and if occupied are mostly are short timers. If you visit them, bring you own food and water, as it's too expensive to keep getting those things out there because gas and deisel is $1 - $1.50 more per gallon than what your accustomed to.

RE: What vehicle was driven upon your initial DMV driving test ?

Didn't need a car to take the driving test. Don't know if I passed the written test, but got a license anyway. I recall it was $100 to my alderman, $50 to the guy in the Secretary of State's office, and $25 to the examiner when I signed on the line. Got the license in the mail 2 week later. I don't think I was 16 yet. Those days there was no picture on the license and no additional ID needed. Chicago 1967.
