RE: Cost of new Duramax

I'm currently in an 06 Duramax with 110K and couldn't happier. My business partner's transmission just went out (luckily, covered by insurance/warranty) and it got me thinking.
A huge repair like that, although unlikely, would really be a hit to our company. So, I'm at least wondering.... I keep hearing stories of the 60K new diesel truck. But, what does it really cost? Can anyone give me a ballpark "out the door" cost of a 2012/2013 Duramax 4X4 CC with a reasonable amount of options. Or, what's the best website to get a realistic price.
I've been so convinced I'm going to keep this truck forever that I know nothing at all about prices of new rigs.... thanks for any info.
I would make a call up to Dave Smith Motors in Northern Idaho. That number will be the lowest you will find.
~
Maybe not *the* lowest . . . but close to it.
Use Edmunds (or?) to find the dealer invoice, minus dealer holdback and you will be pretty close to knowing dealer *cost* - prior to any dealer incentives (to/for the dealer for volume, etc.) from the factory.
Then "shop" the price/s around to dealers in your local area to see how close they can/will come to your "benchmark" prices.
Always contact a dealer's fleet mgr or internet sales rep - never an "on-the-floor" salesperson!
Always price apples to apples (identical model, options, etc.)- w/o any *buyer* incentives.
BTW - remember . . . the *BEST* truck is the one you own now!.:C

RE: Has anybody heard of or used or saw used

The real story
The "Real Story" is *anyone* can receive free crystal clear digital over-the-air channels (including those broadcast in HD) in their area with NO monthly bills!:S
For my area of So.CA I receive about 50 total (never counted).
Handy for DVR recording a network channel while watching a "cable" channel via satellite.
An antenna can be very simple, inexpensive and way smaller than the old "rooftop" antennas of the past.
However, the indoor variety represented will probably leave a lot to be desired (non-reception of many of the available channels).
If the mailing is misleading (953 shows?:h) . . . there are a lot of gullible "Central New Yorkers" out there - who are easily lead..:R

RE: Help --- Looking for a bottle jack

I don't scrimp when buying jacks.
+10
too small a jack is an horrible accident looking for a place to happen. So 16,000 lbs divided by 5 (4 wheels and tongue) is 3,200 lbs. a 2 ton jack will theoretically lift one wheel only, but between you and me, that's too close for my comfort. I'd get a bigger one, just to be safe. Drop that wheel on your foot, it'll ruin your whole day.
So spend more money on a bigger jack, and carry more weight that will increase your load for something you probably won't ever use.
No wonder all you guys need a Peterbilt for a 32 foot trailer.
~
Yikes YS2! Pretty silly rationale!.:R
Since I have a few bottle jacks, I weighed each twice.
Results as follows:
4 Ton = 7.6 pounds
6 Ton = 10.4 pounds
12 Ton = 15.0 pounds
One gallon *less* in your water tank and it's a "wash" between the weight of the 4T and the 12T..:S
Next:
The hydraulic "advantage".
The 12T will handle the lift easier - although a bit slower. Also, less 'effort' required on the handle (lever) by the operator.
You may want to lift something heavier sometime.
The "extra" 7.4 pounds you're carrying is a "no brainer!"
I have used my 12T in the trailer when one of my GY balloons picked up a nail in AZ.
XPS Ribs now - so don't expect to use it again (but will still carry it, LOL)
BTW:
Kudos to Dave Crump for keeping the manufacturing of his "Trailer Pal" in the USA.
Only drawback (besides the $85. cost) is the fact that the majority of axle manufacturers do *not* recommend jacking under the axle.
(The Trailer Pal does the same as a jack - and you sure *can't use it under the spring perch)
(IMO) - possibly good for a light trlr - like a boat trlr, but methinks it *will* result in lots of work for axle alignment facilities due to bent axles. I'll pass.
And . . . oh yeah -
what's wrong with towing with a Volvo, FL, KW or a Pete?.

Nope!

RE: Marvel Mystery Oil (MMO)

Wow lots of responses here. I wasn't sure where I was going to put it. I was thinking about some in the crankcase.. not the gas tank. My main reason for thinking about this is what Vintageracer pointed out. Modern day engine oil no longer has ZDDP (zinc) like it used to. It is my understanding its not so much a problem with late model engine designs. Many use roller hydraulic lifters and not flat tappet hydraulic ones like in my 351W.
I think this is going to be an experiment for a later date when I am not making such a huge trip. I have been using 10w30 Chevron CJ-4 spec oil which still has some ZDDP additive in it. My MH was not equipped with a catalyst, so no worries there. Traveling to the Grand Canyon from Washington State is going to be test as it is. You folks have no idea how much work I have done to this thing. But the wife couldn't be happier.
Sounds like you are a gas burner(?)
If its diesel - (and your engine is pre 2006) - there still is CI-4+ oil out there. Usually Delo 400 can still be found (only) in 5 gal pails at truck supply.
If it's a newer gas or diesel engine - requiring CJ-4 oils - (IMO) put it (the MMO) back on the shelf and follow the factory recommendations - which is most likely *no* additives.
Periodically send an oil sample to Blackstone Labs (or other oil analysis outfit) & see how its holding up.
Lots of discussion and info can be found on Bob the Oil Guy site.

RE: Marvel Mystery Oil (MMO)

Seafoam removes soured raw gasoline gunk and varnish.
Did I miss something?
Tal vez, seen-your Mexabungalows!
Seafoam is great for cleaning the "junk" out of carburetors, etc. - as you mentioned. Good to try it before a complete carburetor disassemble.
I prefer it for that use as well as a gasoline "preservative".
IMO it's better than StaBil. (YMMV)
The list of "claims" for/by Seafoam include additives for your crankcase and . . .
"When added to Gas or Diesel Fuel Tanks":
Cleans fuel injectors & carburetor jets.
Cleans carbon as you drive.
Lubricates upper cylinders.
De-ices and removes moisture.
diesel fuel conditioner & anti-gel.
Stabilizes fuel
Lots of folks swear by Techron added to gasoline to clean fuel systems, injectors, etc.
(IMO again) it rates about the same as lots of other gasoline additives at your local auto parts store.

RE: Progressive Road Side Assistance

My teenage daughter was injured from being rear-ended in another county. The offender played along as this company played slimy hardball, using denial (in a rear-ender no less!) and delaying tactics, knowing that she was a student from another county. Ultimately, following medical treatment, therapy, and recovery, they ground her down to almost nothing, knowing the hardship of an honor student staying out of town for a trial. I wouldn't do business with them, ever, even if their insurance was free of charge... Just one man's opinion. Why would it make a difference if the accident was in another county? State and federal laws still apply don't they? Was Progressive your insurer or the other persons?Think he left a r out of county, making it Country.
But then tplife's post still has nothing to do with Road Side Assistance, does it. And when in another country, you have to make sure all your "i"s are dotted, and "t"s are crossed when it comes to automative insurance. You have to even make sure your insurance is good there too!!!
There's a lot missing with the story besides an "r"!.:W
*If* he means country why would Progressive be involved no matter who had them as the ins agency?.:h
*If* he means county - which is more logical - who had the Progressive Insurance?.:h
Since his sig indicates "People's Republik of Kalifornia" - he's on another planet - or is a California basher in California - and should move ASAP!.:R

RE: Leaf Spring Bracket sheared off- pictures

Just had the Dexter kit installed. The ride is really good now.
http://pic40.picturetrail.com/VOL359/2207780/4309570/402579690.jpg
I must be missing something here . . . .
On October 21, 2011 "danr1707" posted his pics of his broken shackle - and he's waiting for ERS.
Four pages later, on November 25, 2011 "JEBar" posted about his Sunnybrook, etc.
Nothing since November 2011 . . . then -
. . . . "danr1707" (again) on May 15, 2012 - posts,
"Just had the Dexter kit installed".
Either a bunch of posters didn't "catch" the time gaps . . .or maybe "danr1707" waited a loooooong time for ERS!.:B
Was there an "interim" fix?
And - what about the broken weld, tire wear, etc. the eagle-eyed posters caught six months later?.:@

RE: fire extinguisher - fact or myth?

We have a 2-1/2 gallon water extinguisher in the trailer, I keep it near where I sleep, next to the toilet (my trailer), If I have to get up because of the smoke detector, I want to be armed, and if some ones camp fire gets away, I am ready,, You get them at a decent price at your local fire extinguisher service facility, I bought four for thirty bucks a piece.
You can service it yourself and it puts out allot of fire,, Also,, if one of the kids thinks they got you with there pump water gun,,, you can do allot of wetting with 2-1/2 gallons, PLUS, the stream reach is around ten feet!!!
Now add a drop of "Dawn Dish washing soap" and you have a great Class A Foam extinguisher!!! (I have three in my stick and brick)!!!
Save the Dawn for the dishes, don't squirt dish soap into the kid's eyes . . .
"A drop of Dawn" isn't going to do squat, so -
Add real "AFFF" foam additive to your water!.:W
It's not that expensive!.:C

Another hand up.
And - check the gauge (charged?) regularly.
BTW - invert, tap, and or shake - only applies to Dry Chem type extinguishers, LOL!

Also - suggest checking into extinguishers *other than* dry chem - Dry Chem makes a heck of a mess!.:(

RE: Marvel Mystery Oil (MMO)

Turtle Wax recently bought Marvel Mystery Oil out...nothings changed except a nice, glossy new website! I don't think it's ever been proved to do anything significant to a engine by dumping it into your fuel tank.
At least Chevrons Techron has been shown to clean the engine fuel system. And is a regular additive in all Chevron Gasoline.
"Techron is agreed to lead to better performance in engines by BMW, General Motors, Honda, Toyota, Volkswagen, and Audi. Hyundai, Volvo and Mercedes-Benz have issued factory service bulletins advising the use of concentrated Chevron Techron in repair procedures for vehicles with certain mechanical problems.
Techron is available at Chevron, Texaco, and Caltex stations in all three grades of gasoline."
Hmmmm - thought the OP's post/question was about MMO - not Techron!.:h
Unfortunately he didn't indicate what he planned to use it for, etc..:S
Maybe he's gonna use it for car polish since Turtle Wax owns it!?.:@
The latest and greatest use - like RMP3?
Oh well -
Many use it (as noted after sooper's post by "SCClockdr") as a lubricity additive for diesel fuel - usually combined with Diesel Kleen.
However, if you check the lubricity study done at the time ULSD was introduced - there *are* higher rated additives (blind study) than the MMO & DK mix.
~
Side note for MMO usage - my (15+ year old) air impact wrench owner's manual
recommends a couple of drops of MMO in the air connection after use.
Sears (Craftsman) must have thought it was worth the effort to specifically recommend MMO..:W

RE: A/C Issues With Dodge Ram?

There is a major problem with the blend doors breaking and restricting air flow. Go to www.dieseltruckresource.com and search A/C problems
Bingo!
Go to *any* of the Dodge forums and you should find dozens of threads
about A/C problems - including the various blend door problems.
BTW - do *careful* research *FIRST* before throwing serious $$ at the problem.
Dodge will "repair" it for about $800-$1K (same for A/C shops), only to have it fail about a year later.
Same story is repeated over and over on the Dodge forums.
Solutions?
There are DIY fixes for all the doors - and one is really simple for the fresh air door which breaks and blocks air flow.
Look for threads w/ pics and info - did that to mine along with a can of refrigerant and wala! Plenty of cold air.
BTW - that was after Dodge repaired doors etc twice under warranty - (which includes pulling the dash) only to have it fail again about a year later.
Out of warranty for next failure - with forum info, took me about an hour to solve the problem. (And I'm old and slow!)
Read and heed (on the forums)..:W

RE: Rv ladder

Another vote for a collapsible ladder.
Lots of uses - and you can use it wherever it's needed.
As bpounds suggests - the attached ladders are not something I really want to put my faith in!.:W
I have a perm mounted ladder - and will use a *real* ladder if I'm at home - or my collapsible ladder if needed on the road.
If you still want a permanently mounted ladder you can take your time and watch for another Terry with a ladder & rear configuration the same as yours.
(Ask the owner if it's OK to measure for bracket locations.)
BTW - a good place to check for a used perm mount ladder would be an RV salvage yard.

RE: St Tires VS LT Tires

I have decided to go with the XPS Rib 235x85R16 Michelin tire. They are expensive at $300 each but I feel better with that tire than I do with the LT series. I still don't know the wisdom of this and the outcome this summer while traveling over 8,000 miles, but this is the way I am going. We leave in June for an extended trip so I hope I have made a good choice. If I find out before we leave in June that this is not a wise thing to do then I will change again. I will not however go with a 17 inch tire because of the expense of buying new wheels along with new tires.
Thanks for all the good input on this subject I will let you know how it all works out.
The regulation below needs your attention. It dosen't say what kind of tires must be used as long as they meet the axle's requirements. Don't put your safety in the hands of others. Do some more research, please.
DOT ref
FastEagle
FE's suggestion is good.
Putting "your safety in the hands of others" is the pot calling the kettle black!.:R
When doing your research, also "research" the number of ST tires FE has used on his 5th wheel.
Last I saw (FE's own post) was 23 or 24.
For some reason the doctor can't (or won't) heal himself..:W
IMO - FE is a firm believer the "ST" designation stands for - "Simply Terrific".
