RE: bird pictures

Great job. Can you give the camera type & settings? If you use Firefox you can go to Tools>Add-on and then type EXIF in the search window to download an EXIF viewing tool. Once installed, you just right click on an image to show the EXIF data. Don's photo showed this data: IPTC Core (Adobe XMP) Expand All / Collapse All / Show/Hide XMP Source / Show/Hide XMP EXIF IFD0 Camera Make = NIKON CORPORATION Camera Model = NIKON D70 Picture Orientation = normal (1) X-Resolution = 72/1 ===> 72 Y-Resolution = 300/1 ===> 300 X/Y-Resolution Unit = inch (2) Software / Firmware Version = Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0 (20060914.r.77) Windows Last Modified Date/Time = 2012:01:29 19:36:38 Y/Cb/Cr Positioning (Subsampling) = centered / center of pixel array (1) EXIF Sub IFD Exposure Time (1 / Shutter Speed) = 1/4000 second ===> 0.00025 second Lens F-Number / F-Stop = 8/1 ===> ƒ/8 Exposure Program = n/a (0) EXIF Version = 0221 Original Date/Time = 2012:01:29 12:24:53 Digitization Date/Time = 2012:01:29 12:24:53 Components Configuration = 0x01,0x02,0x03,0x00 / YCbCr Exposure Bias (EV) = 0/1 ===> 0 Max Aperture Value (APEX) = 18325/3649 ===> 5.02 Max Aperture = ƒ/5.7 Metering Mode = pattern / multi-segment (5) Light Source / White Balance = unknown (0) Flash = Flash did not fire Focal Length = 300/1 mm ===> 300 mm User Comment (Hex) = 0x41,0x53,0x43,0x49,0x49,0x00,0x00,0x00 User Comment Character Code = ASCII User Comment = Last Modified Subsecond Time = 90 Original Subsecond Time = 90 Digitized Subsecond Time = 90 FlashPix Version = 0100 Colour Space = sRGB (1) Image Width = 2500 pixels Image Height = 1348 pixels Image Sensing Method = one-chip color area sensor (2) Image Source = digital still camera (DSC) Scene Type = directly photographed image Colour Filter Array (CFA) Geometric Pattern = 0x00,0x02,0x00,0x02,0x02,0x01,0x01,0x00 Custom Rendered = normal process (0) Exposure Mode = auto exposure (0) White Balance = auto (0) Digital Zoom Ratio = 1/1 ===> 1 Focal Length in 35mm Film = 450 Scene Capture Type = standard (0) Gain Control = low gain up (1) Contrast = hard (2) Saturation = normal (0) Sharpness = normal (0) Subject Distance Range = unknown (0)As you can see a lot of the data is pretty arcane and mysterious! Windows Explorer may have something similar, but I don't use Explorer and not sure if they do or not. Some photo hosting sites like Photobucket automatically strip the EXIF data. If the shooter uses a GPS, you can see where the image was taken. Here's an example: http://ericpix.net/Online/CN/dragon_2.jpg At the bottom of the EXIF you will see: EXIF GPS IFD GPS Version ID = 0x02,0x02,0x00,0x00 GPS Latitude Reference = N GPS Latitude = 26/1,29/1,124739999/10000000 ===> 26° 29? 12.474? == 26.486798° GPS Longitude Reference = W GPS Longitude = 80/1,9/1,44603999/1000000 80° 9? 44.604? == 80.16239° Links to online mapping websites: Google™ Maps Yahoo!® Maps MSN® Maps & Directions Mapquest® Open KML data with Google™ Earth Save KML data to file Save KML data to file and open with Google™ Earth GPS Altitude Reference = sea level reference (negative value) GPS Altitude = 5/1 m ===> 5 m GPS Time Stamp / UTC Time = 17/1,43/1,35/1 ===> 17h 43m 35s GPS Satellites = 04 GPS Map Datum = GPS Date Stamp = 2010:05:19 UTC Click on the links to Googel Maps or one of the other selections and you'll see where I was standing in the Green Cay Nature Preserve in Delray Beach, Florida, when I took the image.

RE: Picture posting thread...anyone into it?

Don't remember the last time I posted here, but what the heck... One of my photography buddies and I decided it was time to head up to North Georgia and see if any of the fall foliage was left. Fortunately he has a cabin up in the woods, so we planned on an overnight trip. We left the wives at home since SOMEONE has to go to work. The Cabin http://ericpix.net/Online/CN/fall_15.jpg width=640 Located in the booming metropolitan area of Tate City, the residents are fortunate to have world-class shopping, dining and entertainment at the Tate City Mall. http://ericpix.net/Online/CN/fall_13.jpg width=640 The new superhighway connects Tate City with North Carolina - just 2 miles up the road. http://ericpix.net/Online/CN/fall_16.jpg width=640 Started out at Tallulah Gorge - a drop of about 800 feet down to the falls. http://ericpix.net/Online/CN/fall_18.jpg width=640 http://ericpix.net/Online/CN/fall_14.jpg width=640 http://ericpix.net/Online/CN/fall_19.jpg width=640 Alas, Thursday dawned with cloudy skies, so we just shot what we could find. http://ericpix.net/Online/CN/fall_11.jpg width=640 http://ericpix.net/Online/CN/fall_12.jpg width=640

RE: Have the guidelines changed for

Actually, there is no problem if you use 640 as the max for height and/or width. Pixel count/file size is no longer a factor?

Have the guidelines changed for

the picture posting restrictions or is it still geared to keep dial-up users with 300 baud modems happy?
