RE: gooseneck versus 5th wheel hitch

Well, I happen to agree with you, jwduke, but I don't think comparing our recreational vehicles to over-the-road trucks is comparing apples to apples, and unless I missed something, the notice in that link doesn't say why a gooseneck adaptation is bad, just that they will consider it a modification and not cover warranty--at least I think that's what it said. Maybe it has something to do with fifth wheel trailers not being as sturdily built as (most) gooseneck trailers because they aren't designed to carry livestock among other things. I guess what I was trying to compare, was the fact a over the road truck uses the same type of hitch as a 5er. So my feeling is, if it is strong enough to pull a 80,000+ load, it must be the right kind of hitch, no changes needed. The link to Excel campers website, I guess was a link to something the manufacturer doesn't want you to do with their 5er. And using Excel's link, it being a high-end 5er, was hopefully trying to tell someone that if a quality manufacturer doesn't want this done to their frame, that a lesser camper (Not saying that a Montana's frame isn't as good as a Excel) manufacturer would want you not to do the same thing. Hopefully horseylady, this explains what I was trying to say.....

RE: Slide out hydraulic pump

I agree with ljr, go over to the Hitchhiker owner's forum, there is a wealth of information over there on Hitchhiker 5er's. Good luck!!

RE: gooseneck versus 5th wheel hitch

If GN hitches are so good, why then don't over the road trucks use them?? Here is a Link to a very good reason a GN hitch is a BAD idea...... GN hitches have their place, but I don't really think it is with a 5er.

RE: installing a level on the front of the trailer.

Lighten up folks. Can you walk around inside? Can you stay on the bed? If yes-its close enough!;) Is this before or after ingestion of alcoholic beverages?

RE: blue beacon with newer fifth wheel

Don't let them use brightner on your 5th wheel. This is a acid, that eventually turns everything white. They are okay, but expensive for a wash.

RE: brake control

I had this problem in our old Holiday Rambler. First, if you have one of those Teflon plates on your hitch, remove it, try your brakes again. If your brakes are better, try and find the ground for your 12V wiring (Camper). Clean connectors, and use some dielectric grease on the connections. Hope this works! Good luck!!

RE: Which Hitch to get....

Automatic sliders? Pullrite and HiJacker, Pullrite being the more popular one. Mike I would look at the Hijacker if you are interested in a auto slider. It doesn't require a adapter plate, plus it is built by a VERY reliable company, Demco!
