RE: Oil Check question

Most but not all shallow pan Cat 3126/C-7 engines take 19 quarts total including the filter. There is a history of improper length dipsticks for these engines. Mine was one that took 24 quarts to hit the full mark. It would blow oil all over the toad. Cat has a published procedure for calibrating the dipstick. Call the Cat tech support line and have them e-mail you the procedure or tell you where to find it online.

Be sure you have the jacks raised before you add fluid. You could overfill the reservoir if the jacks are down. They probably take ATF if it looks red or AW 32 hydraulic oil if it is clear.

The 6BT is the mechanical 12 valve motor they built for quite a few years. A fine engine. Its little brother the 4BT has delivered a few billion packages in UPS and Fedex vans.

The post about '98 5.9 Cummins engines having bad blocks is misleading and only partially true. In the first half of '98 Cummins was still building the 12 valve mechanical controlled motor and there is nothing wrong with them. The 5.9 ISB came out mid-year of '98 and is called the first generation ISB engine. It is a electronic controlled engine and has a VP-44 injection pump. There were some blocks that were made in Mexico that had some cracking problems. The problem blocks can be readily identified by a 53 cast in the side of the block. A internet search will find pictures of where to look. I had a first generation 5.9 in a Gulfstream Sun Voyager DP and it was not a 53 block and was a fine engine.
A registered '98 motorhome "could" well have been built on a '97 chassis and if so would be a 12 valve motor.

I have a 7.2L C-7 Cat 350. Fuel mileage since new in a 32,000# 40' DP is 7.2 mpg over 34,000 miles. The mileage is calculated by the Engine ECM.

Generator first. Then solar. The generator will always give you power. Solar is not a reliable always available source of power. My solar system will give me 42a on a nice sunny day for 5-6 hours. When its cloudy or we are parked in a shady spot nearly nothing.

I use this for years before we got the rooftop automatic on our current coach. I don't believe you will get a multiple LNB dish to work this way.

A FWIW about accumulators. I just upgraded to a Surflo 5.7 gpm pump and the instructions said if your system has a accumulator remove or disable it.

My point although not very clear was the chances are good that in a lot of cases the actual axle loading when ready to travel will often be higher than the GVWR.

GVWR is just a number. What do the axles actually weight when you are loaded up for a normal outing? That is the number you should actually plan around.

Take a look at Fort Worden State Park in Port Townsend. There is also a private RV park in downtown Port Townsend. Its called Point Hudson Marina and RV park. Port Townsend is a really neat historic town. Google Olympic Penninsula RV Parks. There is also John Wayne Marina and RV Park on Sequim Bay.

I have a Magnum Energy converter/inverter in my coach and the charge voltage numbers for different types of batteries are WRONG. The selection for AGM batteries calls for a maximum charge voltage of 14.3v. That may be right for SOME AGM batteries but not all. My Fullriver 6v AGM batteries have a maximum charge voltage for a 12v pair of 14.9v. At the 14.3v setting they never will get fully charged.

If your coach has a three stage smart converter you should leave it plugged in all the time. How do you know if it has a smart converter? Here is a easy way to tell. Plug in to shore power and leave it for a couple of days. Then take your digital multimeter (you DO have one don't you?)If you don't Radio Shack or Harbor Freight has inexpensive ones that are fine. Set the meter to DC volts and check the voltage at the house battery posts. If the voltage is about 13.2v you have a smart converter. If it is 13.6v or there about you don't.

The improvement when switching to FSD's from Bilsteins was in reducing porposing. With the Bilsteins the front end would porpose something awful on slightly uneven road surfaces. This was on a 31'Gulfstream Sun Voyager DP with less than 20,000 miles on it. It had factory installed Bilstein shocks. I discussed the issue with Henderson Line Up and they recommended switching to Koni FSD's. I did and the improvement was huge. I am a believer.
