Spring brakes are really fairly simple. A large spring presses thru the primary air can to hold the brakes on. If you press the brake peddle with the springs brakes on your using both air and the spring to rotate the s cam and apply brake force. The spring brake valve at the drivers station does nothing more then hold the spring back with air. I would not apply the spring brake while moving for a test. There is no control over how fast the spring expands. It depends on how fast the air can get out of the can. I have trucks that will engage in seconds to full lock up and with an rv going at speed you could damage something. As far as when to to put in gear i would do whatever in comfortable. Just remember to get moving and try not to linger in gear with no movement. You just build heat very fast. Rod
