RE: Chattanooga to Clemson, sc

Escapepod62 Please, please do NOT drive US 64 from Franklin, NC to Brevard, NC unless you are in a Porsche Carrera or on a Harley. This is the perfect sports car or motorcycle switch back heaven. If you are in any kind of RV, you can read your rear license plate from the drivers seat on some of those hairpin curves. Please don't ask me how I know!

RE: The Everglades - What to do?

sjptak . Well, you will be swatting mosquitos then you can go fishing and swat mosquitos, then you can go for a nature ride and swat mosquitos. Then you can go to lunch and swat mosquitos, then go fishing and swat mosquitos then you can go to supper and swat mosquitos then you can go to bed and start scratching. Get up the next day and start over except now you swat and scratch at the same time.

RE: Red Roads and Blue Roads and Big, Big Mountains

Nui. Sorry there are no flat roads over the mountains heading eastward from Washington. The last time I came east, I took I 90 from Seattle and it was not difficult at all, of course it wasn't in the winter. As for "red roads" and "blue" roads, go to your local CAA or AAA office and get a set of "state" maps for your routes. The legend in the corner shows the quality of the highway, unfortunately it does NOT show the state of repair or disrepair. Now, if you want the really back roads go to a outdoor store like Cabella's and get a Delorme Gazetteer for Washington.

RE: Parking near the ocean

Vicki. There is an almost constant breeze over Mustang island, often on-shore and yes it blows salt water. I don't think that the campground on the beach at Port Aransas (on Mustang Island) is open in the winter. Dry camping down the beach is permitted, The sand on the beach shifts and one of the major industries on the island is towing stuck RV's out of the sand. (you did not say what kind of rig you have). There is a nice state park just behind the dune from the beach as are two very nice commercial campgrounds, Pioneer and Gulf Waters. As far as damage, we have had extended stays at both of the commercial parks and there has been no problems from salt water spray. Further up the river in Mercedes, the calcium in the irrigation that sprayed on the coach did require difficult removal.

RE: Campgrounds in Nashville, TN?

deewhite0612. There are 2 private campgrounds, next door to each other near Opryland.(used to be 3 but cannot find if the KOA reopened after the flood a couple years ago). Any way, this is it for downtown Nashville. There is a shuttle to Opryland but see no mention of one with a shuttle to downtown although there may well be bus service to either of these. Might be worth a call. One is Two Rivers, the other Yogi Bear and both are in the TLD.

RE: Countertop Dishwasher Recommendations

DB_Engineer. We are using our third Vista or Danby in as many coaches. (I believe they are the same unit). My wife will not leave home without a mechanical dishwasher. Have had all three installed into cabinet or shelf space after an initial try with the first as a "counter-top". It was such a success that a fixed installation was more practical. We had only one problem with the first one after running the machine while underway, the impeller disintegrated due to the bouncing going down a rough road. The company provided a replacement and detailed instructions for the exchange, An engineer friend and I did the change in one afternoon and reinstalled the unit. we have 6+ years experience with these units and there have been no other problems and we wash ALL of our dishes in the machine. They seem to preform almost as well as our full sized machines at home and use very little water.(DO NOT RUN MACHINE WHILE UNDERWAY)

RE: Pancreatitis??

covetsthesun. I am pleased that you will be seeing a doctor tomorrow. Suggest you ask him (or her) these questions, perhaps the answers might be a bit more authoritative, and a lot more accurate. This forum has answered a lot of questions for a lot of us but it is NOT a great place or medical answers, IMHO.

RE: Keeping the fridge cold on the Inside Passage ferries?

profdant139. You have a good tow vehicle and there is a reasonably good overland highway with lots and lots of lovely scenery between the lower 48 and Alaska, why are you getting on a ferry? Often the interesting ports are visited in the middle of the night. You cannot stay in your RV. Our companions who elected the ferry while we drove had to get up in the middle of the night to move their RV so a commercial truck could get off. The ferry is expensive. Drive up to Alaska and back, Alaska Highway one way, Cassier the other, maybe go over to Port Hardy and drive down Vancouver Island.

Notsloh . I'll bet on old and bad batteries but cleaning and checking cables certainly a first step?

RE: Boring old oatmeal

hokeypokey. Oatmeal boring, no,no,no! Of course by the time I get thru doctoring it, it isn't low cal anymore. First, start with steel ground oats, either from the bulk bins at the gourmet center or the Irish brand, crunchy instead of mushy. They will require a much longer cooking time. After about 10 minutes boiling add a teaspoon of salt or so, then after 15 minutes add a handful of white raisins or craisins. After serving the bowls add a pat of butter and a couple teaspoons of brown sugar and another pinch of salt. THEN add a couple tablespoons of half and half or coffee cream! Boring, no way!

RE: AC unit trips breaker only at night?

scubagirl143. Seems you might want to stop doing what you are doing at night and not in the daytime. (sorry, couldn't resist)

RE: State rd. 8 through NY

NightTraveler. No, no, no to I 90. It is expensive and boring. I do not know about the southern route 8, but SR 28 up to Long Lake and then SR 30 to Sunmount, then SR 3 to Saranac Lake, then CR 35 to SR 86 by Whiteface Mountain to Jay then SR 9N to Keesville. This is the SUPER scenic route. I have done it in my 38 foot MH towing with no problem. It is NOT the fastest but it is the prettiest with lots of fun places to stop. From Keesville go catch the ferry over to Burlington OR (preferred) go up I 87 thru Plattsburgh and catch the Cumberland Head Ferry to Grand Isle where there is a lovely campground and marina called Apple Valley. Also there is a state park between Plattsburgh and the ferry that is very nice. From Burlington then take US 2 thru the Green Mountains of Vermont to the White Mountain of NH with certainly a side trip up to Mount Washington and a stop in Concord for DW to hit the outlet malls. Finally on up to Bangor, unless ,of course, you want to go up the lovely Maine coast thru Rockland and Bar Harbor. My 50 cents worth.

RE: Re: Tail lights for tow vehicle

scot-to-rv. There is a package outfit available that puts an extra bulb in your in each of your towed tail light assembly for brakes, turns and night time tail light (dual filament), and is wired directly to the connector that mates to the RV. There is no connection to auto electrical system. your rv dealer should know where to get one.

RE: Nova Scotia?

lexman1968. It sure is! Second only to the Canadian Rockies. Beautiful country, gorgeous seascapes, nice little towns, wonderful people, nice campgrounds. The Cabot Trail is a must, Be sure and drive it clockwise, The two provincial Parks on Cape Breton Island are really nice, Cheticamp on the west side and Broad Cove on the east. Don't miss the Alexander Graham Bell museum.

RE: Good Places to eat @ Myrtle Beach!!

mytime. "Crab Shack" in Murrells Inlet. It's on the right going south on US 17 (bus) not far south of the turn off from 4 lane US 17. It is NOT part of the chain of the same name. Best fried oysters in the MB area. I don't eat the raw ones anymore.

lathe11. Southern Florida and reasonable rates is an oxymoron! That's why you haven't heard much about it.

RE: Internet access

livemusic . It seems that every responder, so far, has discussed part of your question, ie. what's available and how good is it without addressing the part about satellite service. We travel with a friend who uses hughes.net. He takes the satellite off of his household mount (no cable or phone wire digital service), mounts it on a tripod at his campsite, He lets me connect to his wifi router. Works well, believe it is about $60/month. There are also self orienting roof antennae but they are quite expensive, of course much easier to lock-on to the satellite.

RE: new england routing

blknomad . Have done that route many times. I 81 to Binghamton. I 88 to the NY turnpike west of Albany. Turnpike to I 87 turn off also west of Albany (no toll), I 87 to exit 39 (I think) follow signs to Cumberland Bay SP and then on to the Cumberland Head Ferry (easy on, easy off). Ferry to Grand Isle (there is a nice campground/marina a bit over halfway across the island. Take US 2 to I 89 around Burlington (a nice college town) to Montpelier then follow US 2 again or still to St Johnsbury then I 93 down to Bethlehem and US 302 to Jackson (lunch at the Big Hotel at Breton Woods worth a stop for historical interest if nothing else).Mount Washington and Gorham, a must. Then back on US 2 to Newport and I 95 to Bangor then US 1a to Ellsworth unless you want the fun scenic route then follow US 302 to just north of Portland and get over on US 1 and go up the lovely Maine coast thru Rockland and the Wyeth museums to Ellsworth
