RE: Food is freezing

Normally when the fridge freezes the food compartment the thermistor is bad. (When it fails, the fridge never stops cooling.) The thermistor is the little wire that runs through the fridge and clips onto the coils at the top inside of the lower box.

Duramax - 3:73 or 4:10

Our last truck was a 2007 Chevy 6.0/3:73 gears. Loved the truck, but had always wished I had gotten the 4:10 gears with the gas motor.
Going to be buying a 2007-09 GMC/Chevy Duramax Diesel soon. We will be towing a 36' Montana 5th wheel.
What is the preferred gears for the Diesel combo?
Anybody try both or are most of the trucks coming with the 4:10 or 3:73 gears?
When buying a used truck, what is the best way for me to verify which gears it has?
Thanks in advance for all knowledge shared. - Ron

RE: Water Heater problems

Dear forumcoach: your advise worked. With my WH set to what you suggested, it worked like a charm. The WH worked flawlessly all weekend. It's the first time it's worked like this since we bought the TT.
Good News! I have seen this defect on service calls previously and have discussed it with Suburban. They have seen this issue before as well.

RE: Water Heater problems

I have seen this issue before. The steel tab that sits underneath the PT valve to direct the dripping water away from the gas valve may be bent down. This tab must be bent up, you will see the little cut-out in the tab on the inside towards the burner if you look.
What happens is that water will drip on to the inside gas valve solenoid coil. It will get wet and short to the case of the valve. Sometimes it will short and not open and sometimes it will only partially open causing the big backfire you hear due to low gas pressure.
When the water dry's, it is no longer shorted to the case and the gas valve performs as it should so it can be hard to simulate or diagnose.
I find these tabs bent down out in the field quite often. Bend the tab up and you should be fine.
I have the same issue. What"s a PT valve?
It is the pressure/temperature safety valve. It is located towards the top of the water heater and to the left of the burner on a Suburban. It is common for them to drip some water out as the water expands.

RE: Water Heater problems

Check that tab. The gas valve solenoid coil won't fail until its good and wet. When it dries, all is well again. You can usually see water stains on the coil.

RE: Refrigerator, add a 12v fan inside or outside?

Outside, getting that air flowing through will make a nice improvement on warm days.

RE: Help with roof vent

The vent in our bathroom got damaged by hail. We want to replace it but we don't know how to disengage the crank arm to get the cover off. Can anyone help? Thank you...
Crank the vent lid up, remove the screen, remove the two screws on the crank arm, then you can slide the crank arm assy lever down the lid brace to the release hole.
The vent lid will most likely have a bent tab on the end you need to bend or a little screw to loosen and then you can slide the vent lid off.

RE: Norcold refrigerator

I am getting ready to go out tommorrow and turned the fridge on this morning at 6.00am it s now 2.00pm and the Ice pak in the freezer almost frozen(some liquid still in it).The fridge part is also cold, took 8hrs so at 10 to 12 hrs will be ready to go.
I have it plugged in 110v outlet in my shop not using gas
Lots of fridges work that fast, but some take a day. Manufacture recommendations are 24 hours.

RE: Fiberglass verses aluminum siding on travel trailers?

In general. Steel siding on entry level trailers and fiberglass on mid and premium trailers. 2"x2" wood construction on steel siding walls and aluminum beams on fiberglass construction. Not always, but these are pretty consistent standards. Fiberglass is better imo.

RE: Norcold refrigerator

Hi All,
We just bought a class A with a Norcold refrigerator. Before that we had a fifth wheel with a Dometic. We'll be going on our first trip tomorrow, so today we started the refrigerator on propane. Since this is a used RV we knew we needed to monitor the refrigerator to see if it was working on propane. The results are confounding us. The freezer compartment has achieved 28 degrees, but the refrigerator compartment is still warm. Do these compartments have separate cooling coils?
Art
No - The freezer will cool first. Once the freezer gets down to temp, about 0-10 degrees. Then the fridge will cool, approx. 34-38 degrees. Some fridges take up to 24 hours to reach temp.

RE: Equal-i-zer sizing

Don't do it. I went up one size on an equalizer hitch once. It can be done and will work, but the ride will not be as smooth. I had to have mine tuned very precise to eliminate bucking from the extra heavy duty torsion. Equalizer engineers do not recommend going up a level for this reason. Equalizer makes a great product, but buy the one that it is rated for.
