RE: Reinforcing the top bunk

I think the 150 lb rating is probably added by the legal consultants for the RV Manufacturer, it's load limit probably a bit higher than posted. But you don't really want little Betsie crashing down on Tommy in the middle of the nite! :E There are some brands of bunkhouse trailers with a "unlimited weight rating". Our Jayco has a sticker on the top bunk 200 lbs, and unlimited on the bottom. If you are good at DIY, an 3/4" plywood arch on each side of the bunk would take the weight of the upper bunk I would think. Mostly the weigh ratings apply because the top bunk is attached to the walls backed by minimal aluminum tubing or wood furring strips.

RE: Diesel ford ranger

Ford claims it would cut into F150 sales and they don't want it to be positioned at that price point or even higher than the F150. It's a real Shame...

RE: Entry door with glass you can see thru.

We saw a 5th wheel and a TT at a RV trade show that had door window that slid up and down leaving a screen...that was cool.

RE: Hello out there...

If you go to RVTrader.com, enter used, enter your zip code, enter price range and other details such as bunks...you'll find a slew of them. Then you start eliminating and picking and choose which one's you're interested in. Example here... in Washington State for a Bunkhouse TT...Good luck!

RE: Advice On New Fiver Purchase

Lantley...the OP said "a comparable fiver" and I said "has nearly the same floorplan". :h The Pinnacle is Jayco's top of the line 5er, but doesn't have a bunk model.

The local BBB says La Mesa RV in San Diego gets an A+ rating...13 complaints have been resolved in the past 7 years to the customers satisfaction. I've always heard that they were some what sleazy!

RE: A/C freezing up

This is from Bryant RV- "THE MOST COMMON cause of icing in an RV roof mount A/C is the refrigerated air leaking directly back into the return air. Remove the ceiling assembly and with foil tape (don't use duct tape) seal the cold air outlet duct so that none of the "chilled" air can leak into the return air path. Secondly in high humidity situations you may need to run the fan on the high setting only, however I suspect your problem is most likely related to internal air leaks. This is a lot cheaper than recharging the A/C and is something the average do it yourselfer can handle. You didn't say whether your unit has duct work in the ceiling, if it does make sure the ducts are open and clear ( remove ceiling grills and inspect with a mirror in one hole and a flashlight in another) and that the transition of the airflow from the roof unit into the ducts are smooth and well sealed."

RE: Advice On New Fiver Purchase

2012 Open Range 427 BHS RVTrader.com shows prices of $52,900.00 Ponchatoula, LA, $54,299.00 Nacogdoches, Texas...and full msrp $76,376.00 in Florida! At 15,600 GVWR lbs I hope you have a really big truck! :E Open Range is a terrific builder, gives you a 2 year warranty and has great quality and customer service. But since you asked...Crossroads 5th wheels are higher end also...nice units from Thor RV with a lot of luxury for the price. The Jayco Eagle 365BHS has nearly the same floorplan, for $63,000.00 msrp with every possible option, sale prices are around $44,285.00 and it is 1'9" shorter, has bigger fresh/grey/black tanks, and also a 2 year warranty. Good luck..that 427 BHS is a really nice floorplan!

RE: Extended Warranty

Rare is it when a person buying an extending warranty actually gets what they paid for. There are many lines of fine print, exclusions and "we reserve the right.." legalese. Sometimes malfunctioning or broken items are replaced with rebuilt or "salvaged" items. Frequently claims are denied because the insurance carrier and/or the repair facility says it was owner abuse or "owner neglect". A major consumer magazine says that if you buy an extended warranty, 70% of it is pure profit for the dealer that sold it. And only around 30% of the folks who buy it are completely satisfied with the results. http://www.military-money-matters.com/images/fine-print.jpg height=150 width=150

RE: 2012 Jayco Eagle SL 314 bds

Like Ranger said...we are multiple Jayco owners with 7 so far...and we sure wouldn't have done that if we had any of the horror stories about the "RV's from hell" you read about here. If our SoCal Jayco Jafari Club is any indication, it seems that most Jayco owners buy another Jayco when it comes to trade in time. It's a good indication that they are truely "Happy Campers"! And even tho' Jayco is the 3rd Largest RV Builder in North America, and sells 2 of the best selling lines of trailers...they still are family owned and believe in "treating their customers like family." The 2 year warranty on everything inside, outside, over and under the Jayco is just icing on the cake. Note that when I searched for the 2012 Jayco Eagle SL 314 BDS on RVTrader.com, I found them for brand new sale priced at $27,925.00 in Wisconsin up to full msrp of $43,310.00 in Oregon. So there is a pretty big spread in prices and room to negotiate! Good luck! 2012 Jayco Eagle SL 314BDS Floorplan and optional interiors. http://www.gagscamperway.com/rv/new/trailers/Jayco/2012/314bds.gif height=200 width=200

RE: Campgrounds in Island Park, Idaho

P.S.-The drive to Yellowstone from Island Park is a pleasant and senic drive on a modern highway. And there are plenty of fuel stops.

RE: Campgrounds in Island Park, Idaho

We spend a great deal of time in Island Park when we were looking to buy an RV Campground. The geographical area is the same as YellowStone and there are some beautiful places to see that are not generally known to the common tourists at Yellowstone. Henry's Lake. Lower Mesa Falls is a 65 ft plunge. Harriman State Park lies within an 11,000-acre wildlife refuge in the greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. Moose, Elk, and Sandhill Cranes are common, as is North America's largest waterfowl, the Trumpet. "The corner of Idaho that butts up against Yellowstone National Park may lack some of the specific attractions of the park—Old Faithful, for example, is in Wyoming—but the kind of land is much the same. This area of Idaho is mountainous, forested, and pocked with lakes that have become prime recreation spots for Idahoans. The outside world, so eager to visit Yellowstone, seems barely to have discovered, so far, the wonders of Idaho just across the line. Idaho’s most stunning state park, Harriman, is located in the middle of a massive wildlife refuge where trumpeter swans and numerous other birds visit regularly. (There is no camping at Harriman, however.) Nearby Henry’s Lake is widely considered one of the very best fishing spots in Idaho—high praise indeed. There are scenic drives throughout this area, including the wonderful Mesa Falls drive, where the visitor can gaze as some of Idaho’s best waterfalls and wander through a recently renovated visitor center. This is also one of Idaho’s best places to observe wildlife. Pronghorn antelope, mule deer, bald eagles, beavers, porcupines and bears are only a few of the animals wandering through the forests. Much of this area is in the Caribou-Targhee National Forest, which, unlike most other national forests in Idaho, has a sixteen-day (rather than fourteen-day) limit on stays. Note should be made here of a campground that falls outside of, but is accessed mainly through, Idaho (and is managed by the Ashton, Idaho, ranger station): Cave Falls. This campground, about 23 miles east of Ashton and along the Fall River, is on the southern border of Yellowstone National Park. (For that reason, special hiking permits are needed for anyone planning to hike north from the campground.) The campgrounds in this eTrail include: Henry's Lake State Park, Flat Rock, Big Springs, Buffalo, Upper Coffee Pot, McCrea Bridge, Buttermilk, West End, Box Canyon, Riverside, Warm River, Pole Bridge, and St. Anthony Sand Dunes." RE: new fifth wheel purchase

Don, I haven't had a Forest River Made RV...such as what the Coachmen Brookstone is. I'm partial to Jayco's! :B Coachmen is an older RV Company, around since 1964..when they started up they made aluminum camper caps for pickup trucks. Forest River bought them out in 2008 when Coachmen was having dire financial issues, and about to go under. Forest River pumped money into the company and revived it. They also kept much of the original Coachmen management in place...so it was an easy transition. Forest River is a billion dollar company, owned by Warren Buffet, and they have tremendous buying power. They can purchase all the stuff needed to build RV's (build materials, electronics, tires, components, etc) much cheaper than smaller RV builders. So Forest River pumped money into Coachmen, and the transformation started. More products, more value, brand new models. One of the first things they did was revive the Catalina brand of trailers...which used to be a #1 selling trailer in the USA...my dad even had one here in California when we were kids! So now I'm getting to the Brookstone 5th wheel...it's without a doubt one of the most feature packed midline 5ers out there, lots of standard equipment. Of the 20 options offered, you'd only really need to add the 2nd roof A/C to the trailer..thats it! Everything else you need is already there. A 2nd A/C in the summertime is practically a must have! ;) http://rvingplanet.interactrv.netdna-cdn.com/make-image/mak6545_5/335x243/ height=200 width=200 Note that on RV Trader.com I found them brand new for between sale price of $35,900.00 to full msrp of $55,890.00. Good luck! And keep us posted!

RE: Storing your RV?

Leave the slideout in. Just cycle the slideout in and out every once in a while to keep things good. Power is good for working on the RV or powering stuff when needed. A water supply is nice but a long hose can supply it when you need it. A dump to your septic system also would be nice but not needed. Driving it around occasionaly will help keep the tires from cracking due to lack of use. Keep the tires from ground contact..on plastic blocks such as Lynx Levelers to prevent moisture damage. The rubber has natural waxes in the compound that need to be redistributed within the rubber. Also spray them with 303 Aerospace protectant to keep ozone and uv damage at bay. And watch for mice, rats and insects building nests and even eating rubber hoses and wiring. Moth balls work. A gasoline storage additive such as Sta-Bil or Amsoil Gas Stabilizer added to the tank is good too. That should do it. ;)
