RE: Colorado Highway 550

I've answered this question so many times I can't remember. If you will read Mountain Directory West, they recommend that large rigs NOT go this way. Yes, it is travelled by semis and by some large rigs every day but the semis have to and the others either didn't know ahead of time or have little respect for their lives and too much testosterone. This is a road you MUST see, but do it in a TOAD. I've talked with several LEOs in the area and the horror stories they tell about not only the semis, but also the RVers would curdle your blood. Take an alternate route from Durango. Go to Cortez (and Dolores) and go through Ridgeway to 550. It's a beautiful drive and much safer.

RE: Almost No Hot Water to Shower

Everything is closed (or open as appropriate) and no water is dripping anywhere.

Almost No Hot Water to Shower

My shower was at best luke cold with almost no hot water at all. The kitchen and bathroom sinks have plenty of piping hot water. Anyone have any ideas what the problem is and how to fix it? There is very little pressure on the hot side of the shower but plenty on the cold side. It almost sounds like a connection has come loose but????

RE: Warm Springs Reservoir, OR

Gary, I've done the same thing and, you're right, the resolution isn't good enough. I've got reservations at the Burns RV Park anyway and am arriving a couple days early. So I will just drive there in my Jeep and make a determination then. Leaving for CO this morning, will arrive Friday. On to OR the first week in June. Did you get my PM? Denny

RE: Warm Springs Reservoir, OR

I talked with someone in the Burns BLM office and got the impression that if you took it easy there should be no trouble for even a class A MH down that road. Narrow and windy doesn't bother me at all; it's the quality of the road I care about.

RE: Warm Springs Reservoir, OR

Gary, Thanks for the tip. I'll try to see how it fits into our schedule and react appropriately if I can. You know rockhounders - there is no rock we won't travel for! Denny

RE: Warm Springs Reservoir, OR

Gary, I just talked with a lady from the Burns Office of the BLM and she told me that there are campgrounds at Warm Springs Reservoir. I've looked at every map/satellite source I have and can't find them but at least they exist. I'm driving there via 84 in Idaho and then 20 in Or so will miss Winnemuca I'm afraid, but if you have any suggestions about rockhounding in the Burns area, I'm all ears! Denny

RE: Warm Springs Reservoir, OR

Gary, Thanks for your trouble. I had to laugh when I opened the link and it said that Warm Springs Reservoir is in Idaho. They were off by one state! I've emailed BLM Burns Division to see if they have any recommendations for that area as it is mostly BLM land. I'm going up there for a long weekend rockhounding and the reservoir is right in the middle of an area we will be prospecting. I have reservations in Burns, but that means a LOT of back and forth traveling in the Jeep to take care of dogs a couple times a day. Since they are mostly indoor pets I don't want to take them with us when we are combing the mountains for rocks. I've never boondocked before and am a little leery of simply parking the MH in the middle of nowhere with no one around while I'm not there. I need a little warm and fuzzy feeling about where I park but would be happy with a place that I could feel comfortable about. Denny

RE: Warm Springs Reservoir, OR

Gary, Thanks but that's the wrong part of the state. The one I'm looking for is east of Burns, in the SE portion of the state. Why they have two similar named bodies of water escapes me and it confused me when I first looked as well.

Warm Springs Reservoir, OR

Does anyone know of any campgrounds or camp sites, primitive or not, at Warm Springs Reservoir about 50 miles SE of Burns, OR? I don't need any type of hookups, just a safe place to camp for about a week or so.

RE: Nu-Wave type oven

Say what you want but I think the NuWave is the best thing since BBQ. We use ours at the house frequently and it goes with us in the MH. I love it.

RE: Canyon Lake, TX to Nampa, Idaho Route Choices?

Hello, new to the forum! I'm traveling from Canyon Lake, TX to Nampa, ID next week and wonder if anyone would like to make the case for one route over the other. I'm hauling by myself (and 5 scottish terriers)a 2012 Infinity 40 foot 5th wheel. My tow vehicle is a Dodge Ram 3500. I can't decide if I should stay I-10 to El Paso and hang a right or go to Ft. Stockton, cut up through Roswell, etc. or skip all that and take 87 due north past Oklahoma and cut north. I've traveled all these routes except the El Paso one. Any suggestions? Thanks, Barbara Here's another alternative. Go to Amarillo, hang a left to Gallup, then go north to Cortez, Moab to I70, to UT 6 to I-15 to I-84 and voila! However, I enjoy taking new ways so why not try to the road you haven't taken before?

RE: Tire replacement at 9 years?

Michelins are not required to be replaced for 10 years (unless they require it for some reason other than age). Many people feel more comfortable changing their tires prior to that time, ESPECIALLY if they aren't Michelins. As long as my tires show no cracking, excessive wear and tear, and a Michelin rep approves them, I won't waste my money replacing them for another year and a half (they are 8 1/2 years old now). If I had any other brand I would not wait past seven years to replace them.

RE: rv parks near denver colo

Actually, there are several. Check www.rvparkreviews.com for parks in Denver and surrounding areas. Personally, I prefer Chatfield.

RE: 491 to Moab

The road from Cortez is MUCH better! I wonder if the road from Gallup to Cortez is because it is on reservation land. Just wondering.

RE: Colorado. Hwy 141 or/and 145

It would be a lot easier to answer if we knew what you were looking for. I've travelled both those roads several times and they are good roads. What else do you want to know?

RE: (Winegard SK-3005 TRAV'LER) Back up plan for installation

I had mine professionally installed but there are several YouTube videos for DIYers. If you are having health issues because of age (I'm almost 71 so I can ask that ;), I strongly recommend you either have someone with a strong back and mechanical/electrical skills to help you. The antenna weighs 43 lbs and is very awkward to handle. The roof is no place to be if you aren't 100% stable. Don't ask how I know!

RE: Convincing my father in law - Dangerous towing.

I think you're in a no-win situation with your FIL. He has obviously dug in his heels. I have a MH but I would imagine that the situations are similar regarding brake systems. Most states require me to have a supplemental brake system for my TOAD and I would think that this would also be the case for a heavy fiver needing a brake controller. If this is the case, look up what the LAW requires and show this to him. If that doesn't work, IMO you have no choice other than to refuse to allow your children to go with him this summer.

RE: Crestview RV

While Crestview RV may be going under, they got a A+ the last time the Better Business Bureau rated them. Lonestar in Killeen is darn near as good with an A- and no open complaints for a whole year...and even that was resolved. Crestview is going under??? I'd like to see your source for that. I'm not doubting you have one, but living just a few miles from the Georgetown facility I can only say that I'd like to have a business that's going under that has as much traffic as they do both in sales and service. I can understand if the Buda store was having troubles, but not the Georgetown one. Of course they are owned by the same company so who knows. I believe that the OP also stated that he was looking for another facility since Lonestar was all but closed down. For your info - we are located north of Austin while there are many RV dealers south of Austin. It isn't worth it to most of us to have to haul our RVs the 50 or more miles through Austin to get to a facility and leave it there for weeks until they decided to get to it. So any place that is located north of Austin is invaluable to us.
