RE: Front Of Fifth Wheel Very High While Driving

Dave, I have a wet bolt kit with the extra heavy straps and I inspect everything before and after every trip. I have found no I'll effects. I think that will do it.

RE: Front Of Fifth Wheel Very High While Driving

nose high weights being 20 pounds heavier than the level weights ...no ill effects. This is what I would have expected - I never understood the idea that a nose high/low rig would have much impact on axle weight distribution - even if the suspension was almost rigid I can't figure out how to calculate any appreciable differences. For Specularius though I'll repeat my experience... I also started towing with a bigger truck that was set up for a different hitch height. After a year of towing (nose low 4") I had a suspension link tear out - eg the same linkage that does weight distribution. I'm upgrading my suspension AND moving my hitch to level the rig. At least, those are on my RV "to do" list. on edit... noticed I had exactly this failure link failed link

RE: Front Of Fifth Wheel Very High While Driving

I've towed two rigs a bit nose high - due to the ride height of my truck and maintaining rail clearance. I had no issues in 6 years and thousands of miles. Now I am running nose low and I think that did cause issues. One of the links in my suspension pulled through the bolt and failed. I suspect at least part of this failure was due to the linkage being closer to the far end of travel and hitting the travel limit more often and with more force because of the out of level situation.

RE: Do I need slider or not?

If you had a Heartland product as I do, they will tell you a slider is not necessary. I have a Heartland and it did $1100 in damage to my truck when I made a U-turn. I should note though... I had a sliding hitch but didn't think I'd need it to complete the turn. I think I might have made it if I had not hopped a curb with both a truck and trailer tire - that tilted the cab back and trailer forward just enough to crunch. At the time my insurance company told me "no problem" we don't raise your rates for one claim. So I put it through. Last month we changed insurance companies (we moved to a new state) and the new company has a surcharge tacked on for prior claims. Oh well. fwiw I liked my slider. Now I have a longbed and no slider.

RE: Question about using overdrive

The tranny fluid temps rise rapidly when you leave OD off I found the opposite to be true. so I would normally lock out OD towing heavy. Tranny temps rise when OD is off, tranny temps drop when OD is engaged. It would skyrocket if the OD was off and the torque converter was unlocked. On the last RV when the temps went over 200 the front seal would leak When the TC is unlocked for sure temps go up. Transmission are different too I guess, since mine will run up to 200 degrees not towing anything. There could be differences in what a switch does too. For mine it just locks out the highest gear - so operating at the lower gears is identical.

RE: Walmart parking lot stays - need advice please

We've done it often. It was always safe. Our kids liked to window shop the WM aisles then read a book and sleep. I think an available WM is safer than driving tired to reach a destination. As a concerned DH myself I can sympathize. For sure they should have a few cell phones ready with batteries charged - both in the WM and on the road.

RE: Question about using overdrive

The tranny fluid temps rise rapidly when you leave OD off I found the opposite to be true. When I was towing 10,000# I let the tranny shift into OD. It did not hunt and temps were OK. When I jumped to 14,000# the tranny would hold OD on the flats, but the transmission temp would creep up. When I locked out OD and force the downshift the trans temp dropped - so I would normally lock out OD towing heavy.

RE: How is it leaking?

I really liked the idea of checking the screws... however they were all tight :( Also, there was no rust. However I did find some staining that looks like water running from under the window. It's an emergency exit window and my guess is that's the issue. Will need to investigate more.

RE: Where do you park at home-backyard camping spot

We use ours for guests and the kids go out and watch movies and play video games there. We have a 50A hookup with water. I just added the hardscaping. There's a horse farm behind us so it is a nice view. http://www.lindemulder.org/piclib/rvpad.jpg height=400 width=300

RE: How is it leaking?

hmmm... this increasing list of culprits is making a pressure test seem like a better deal all the time.

RE: How is it leaking?

I like the pressurized RV and soap idea. I'll need to figure out who can do in in central FL and for how much $$'s

RE: How is it leaking?

OK... I can understand the window idea. I'd been puzzling and puzzling the roof. I also suspect the light up in the corner there. It all looks OK to me but I guess I need to start pulling stuff apart. Window first.

How is it leaking?

A couple months back we noticed that the bedroom counter top had delaminated! We were pretty sure it happened fast since it was hard to miss and had not been there just a few week prior to seeing it. It seems that water got into the subsurface and it swelled, popping off the laminate. At first I assumed it must be a leak from the roof and inspected all the caulking and various seals in the front corner of the rig. Nothing obvious. I've run out there every time it pours rain and I cannot find any dampness. Now I'm noticing a bit of deformation, slight, like bumps and bubbles on both the inside and outside of the wall! It must be water getting into the wall? How? Where do I look? I want to get ahead of this but have no idea where it's coming from... :(

RE: Best way to connect white water hose that won't leak

...let it drip... There are only so many things I can fix. Now it is inside a compartment, and although it is a waterproof area, I don't want it wet inside the hatch. OH, misunderstood. Inside my utility area I have done OK with a new washer, a little teflon tape and a round hose. I agree - there the drip is not OK w/me either. I also thought about replacing for a quick connect, maybe with a 90 extension but I've always been able to get it to seal.

RE: Ram 1500 Pulling a 10,000 lb Travel trailer

I have a hard time believing that trailer weighs 10K ... 10K GVWR maybe, but that size, likely closer to 7-8000lbs max as is That was my take too. I had a 10,000# trailer and now have one pushing 15K... it's a LOT bigger.

RE: Break Away switch works fine!

I'd check your brakes. I hooked a lanyard and pulled it out while turning out of a site and I thought I'd hit a tree! I stopped dead immediately. It was actually a relief to get out, walk around and then see the dangling cord and figure it out. Yes... that was with the "little" Cummins. Maybe the 12liter Volvo would have kept going.

RE: Denied entrance in OC MD, Their Park Their Rules Their Loss

I'm not a dog person... don't dislike them but don't have them. Nice dogs are fine - the others, not so much. DW has been bitten, on the street, in front of the owners house... oops. My FIL was chased into his own yard off the sidewalk and bitten... oops. It happens. Here are my stories... First, the one the CG checkin lady never understood. The rules said "no (sic) viscous dogs" and DW asked if those were the dogs that stuck to your tires when you ran over them. I guess literacy jokes are a dying breed. Next... staying in a county CG with the family of a friend on in the volunteer FD. He calls us to ask if we are "OK". Turns out that a camper there locked his two large dogs in the RV and they escaped and were unleashed chasing people around - the call was out to the rescue squad to respond. Animal control got them and the park ranger had come by advising us to keep kids inside until the animals were caught. The campers returned and tried to make light of it all... "oh those dogs they always get out, they aren't aggressive". They were escorted out by the cops. It's a matter of perspective I suppose.

RE: Sea World Florida?

BTW, where did you guys camp at ( or did you do hotels )? Tropical Palms is a very nice place. There is a KOA up here in Lake Nona. Nothing right by SW that I know about though.

RE: Tire Balancing

The once concern I've had about balancing trailer tires is getting it done correctly. I understand the rims are not the same as vehicle tires and I've only had two answers from the shops I've asked: 1. Oh no, all rims are the same - nothing special about those, bring them in we'll balance them. 2. Yes, that takes a special adapter on the machine... we don't have it - you need to find someone who does. I had to take all 6 of my tires in for a valve stem swap and that was a hassle... not sure I'm up for trying it for balancing.
