RE: Vizio 37" LED TV

Make sure you check the viewing angle. Some VIZIO's have poor viewing angles and when viewed from slightly lower angle the picture turns dark. I think the LED versions are better (I suspect?) Good units spec the viewing angle as +/-178 degrees, maybe better than you need. But watch out for this since a lot of RV's mount the TV up higher meaning that you look at it from a low angle.
That is the problem I have with my 22 inch Vizio mounted in the bedroom cabnet. The picture is fine if you are standing up, but try to watch TV in bed and picture is black and almost worthless. The next TV I buy for the MH I'll lay on the floor, in the store, to really check the viewing angle before I purchase it.

Great tip! Many times is our travels I could have used one of those. I will have one under the seat of the MH. Thanks

RE: GPS Lane Guidance Questions

I can't say for other models, but on my 1450LMT it's about worthless. If you are in heavy traffic and can't be watching the screen the lane assist is on then off before you even see it. That is just one of the many flaws with the 1450 and not a model I would ever buy again.

RE: Best coverage, AT&T/Verizon?

Mifi is a hotspot...not a card but a small wifi device, think of it as a kind of router that you take everywhere. As far as coverage I was a Verizon tech and usually if there is a Verizon tower there is a ATT tower right beside it. Very few areas anymore where you can't get a signal on both phones, 6-8 years ago that was not the case.
Not to argue, but I live in Ft Myers FL. I switched to Verizon the first of the year as AT&T service was so bad that it was hard to make a phone call without it dropping. I had been with AT&T since they bought Cingular One but their service in my area was just about worthless. AT&T's reason....."our towers are overloaded." So there may be a tower next to a Verizon tower, but if it can't handle the load and hasn't been upgraded in years it's not much good.
AT&T's problem in many areas is AT&T had exclusive rights to iPhones for years and sold Millions of them. Problem is....they pocketed the profit and never put anything back into upgrading the towers to handle the Millions of new phones they added to the system. Speaking only from my experience.

RE: GREAT low vision Firefox add-on + good for night browsers

Great tip, thank you for sharing. The machine we had to buy for my MIL was over $5,000 so she could read a newspaper and her mail. Now it can be done for free and wouldn't even have to buy the newspaper.

RE: KVH R5SL dome and Direct TV

Brobox
Yes, I removed the cover and everything looked dry and clean like the day it was installed almost 3yrs. ago. Could see no corrosion on the visible contacts. BUT I guess that it has been taking longer to lock onto the sat and haven't used the in-motion in quite a while as our inverter is not operating. There wasn't any obstruction where we were parked, had been there 2 days with the normal good reception. This was in the early AM and there was dew on the dome and roof. With the cover off the antenna would turn and go up and down sometimes but not every time I would turn it on although it would never stop and go up and down like it was hunting. It did stop a couple of times about 90degrees from the satellite direction here at our house. Our old Datron open dish would hesitate like that when it was getting a nibble then adjust and lock in.
Thanks
Dave
That was the same thing my dome was doing, kept searching and searching but wouldn't lock on to a signal. I unplugged every electrical connection and cleaned them with Radio Shacks contact cleaner, the one with the brush on the can. I also sprayed all of the gears and tracks with silicone. That fixed it temporarily, but it started doing it again. After a call to Kingdom explaining the problem, I felt it wasn't worth throwing parts at it when it was so outdated. The parts were obsolete and twice the cost as the same parts for a newer unit.
Is your dome the original 2000 that came with the MH? A lot of new technology in 12 years and with it came much lower cost for replacing domes.

RE: KVH R5SL dome and Direct TV

Are you able to get on the roof and take the cover off of the Dome? I had a similar problem with my Kingdom. I sprayed all of the electrical connections with contact cleaner and it worked for one more season. The following year it did it again, so I upgraded to a Traveler and HD. Kingdom told me it was to old to fix and I agreed with them.
Are you in an area where you are getting a good signal?

RE: FYI re: unwanted texts on a limited data/text IPhone users!

I don't know about AT&T, but I just found out that on Verizon you can block up to 5 text numbers and 5 phone numbers at no charge. You can do the block from your online account. Took me a while to find it, but once I Google it, someone had step by step instructions posted on one of the forums. I was getting advertisement texts from a darn RV Park and I have to pay for texts as well. However I did call their 800 number and told them I would never stay there unless they paid my phone bill. Don't think that will happen so I guess the text cost them a repeat customer.

RE: Momma's Laptop Screen Gone

Did you change the cables from the screen to the laptop motherboard? These are known to go bad more often than the screen itself.
That would make sence if the laptop worked with the desktop monitor.

RE: Mossberg says to hold off on laptop purchase

Considering Win 7 did some a big injustice by disallowing backwards compatible software use, I'm not at all interested in Win 8. Even MS's so-called 'Virtual Machine' fails.
Windows 7 was NOT my idea.
I never wanted anything to do with it. We special ordered a laptop w/ XP when Microsoft tried to make Vista be mandatory. 5 years on, we are nursing the unsprung hinged top Gateway laptop along as well as my reliable 8 yr old HP Pavilion w/ XP, 512k RAM, and a 2.2 GHz Athlon 3200+ chip.
But the stuff is dated, and that laptop lid won't last too long, thus my interest in all the latest alternatives.
I did the same as you, special ordered a Dell with XP but had to replace the DW's laptop with a Vista. Hated it so much we gave it away.
Windows 7 is a GREAT improvement and have now upgraded all of the computers. The bad part was non-backwards comparable on the printer and some software, but it was time to upgrade anyhow. I won't be rushing to embrace Windows 8, I am sure the first addition will be buggy.

RE: Momma's Laptop Screen Gone

UPDATE
Swapped screen and inverter and it still did not work.
So I took it to a repair place and the guy thinks it is the motherboard and maybe the video card. Will know Monday so I hope it is easy fix. Will update when I get call. ED
That is strange...If the laptop works with your desk top monitor, I don't see how the motherboard and video card can be bad. If the motherboard is shot, it is not worth fixing on a 4 year old laptop, IMHO.

RE: (Winegard SK-3005 TRAV'LER) Back up plan for installation

WOW! After follow this post for 5 pages makes me glad I bought mine when CW had a 10% off coupon and "free" installation. Sure sorry to hear mail order did not work out for you.I got mine from Amazon and had no issues and got it fast. What was the total price from CW when you drove away with it mounted and working ?
Mine was the Dish version and it was $1,143.85 including tax installed. They even installed the 211K I bought on ebay, had it programmed and working. I did wait for the 10% off coupon that CW has in their mailers a couple of times a year before I made my purchase. I got lucky, the mailer that I waited for also had the Traveler on sale with "free" installation.

RE: Garmin GPS 1490 Nuvi problem

Thanks for the instructions HouseApe. What a hassle for the average user to get a GPS to works as it should.
Here is one of the most aggravating problems I have with my 1450. Mine will not cancel the destination once it is reached. If you go to the main menu the "cancel" button is missing so when your trying to go home all you here is "re-calculating" until you turn the GPS off. A software update fixes it for about a month, but what a hassle.

RE: Best Buy sales gimick...... or not?

The Calibration DVD can be bought all over the place for $25. I just saw a display of them at Best Buy. On Ebay they are also pretty reasonable. They DO work! I calibrated my new Sony and what a difference in the picture quality. It was free service when I bought it at Circuit City....I sure miss that store.
It is a simple process of inserting the DVD in your DVD player and following the on screen adjustments instructions with your TV remote. It is a shame that Best Buy charges an additional $175. to have a Geek push your buttons for you.

RE: Garmin GPS 1490 Nuvi problem

I have the 1490LTM and in 7000 miles have zero issues.
The one thing I have done is put the USA map on the SD card. The internal memory is full out of the box. Maybe that is the difference ?
That is true, One of the Tech at Garmin showed me how full the memory is and had me remove all of the foreign languages and foreign keyboards.
It didn't help, my 1450 still crashes. However, I am going to take your suggestion and try moving the map to the SD card. Good idea and thanks for adding a suggestion.
How did you move the map to the SD card, drag and drop with SD card out of the Garmin and inserted in the computer?

RE: Garmin GPS 1490 Nuvi problem

I have had a 1450LMT for about two months now with no problems. When I opened it the first thing it told me was there was a software update it needed. Did the problem show up for everyone right away or did it take a while?
Interesting as there are over 2,000 4 and 5 star reviews for this model on amazon and that was one of the reasons I purchased mine.
My first one worked fine for about 3 months, then it kept freezing when in route. Garmin replaced it and this one crashes about once a month. I have downloaded every update available, nothing has worked. I have to do a complete reset to bring it back to life. I have had two 1450 lemons. I wish the stars on Amazon would take the two junkers I have owned.

RE: Garmin GPS 1490 Nuvi problem

I have the 1450LMT, same unit just without Bluetooth. It has been the biggest piece of junk Garmin ever made. I have had your problem, locking up in the middle of a route, etc. etc. My original unit was replace, but this one is just as bad. Try a software update, if that doesn't do it a reset will solve the problem, but if it's like mine, only for a short time. Good luck with yours.
