RE: Dry Camping Question

I fulltime in my RV, with FHU's where I park it down at work.
BUT.....after reading this thread, and several more provided by other posters, I am going to keep my water tank full (100g) full because......
I live in Calif, and an earthquake can happen at any time.
And you just know the water and power and gas piping will be cut off, or shut off. I keep a full tank of fuel also.
No fuel will be available when electric is cut off, so I will keep a full tank of gas. Propane full, with 3 extra 5g bottles.
Plenty of food and drink, too.
Smart move! I also live in the desert, so I guess I better keep a full tank. I always kept around 3/4 full., but since you mentioned earth quake, it made me think.

RE: 2001 Beaver Marquis Jasper Questions

Well, I did buy a 2001 Beaver Marquis Jasper on April 20, 2012 here in Florida. Mine has the CAT 455 engine and had 37,000 miles on it. I like it -- awesome compared to my previous ride. I traded in my 2003 Fleetwood Revolution 40C which I was never happy with even after redecorating it. It was just too "plain Jane" for me. The Beaver is what makes me truly happy so far. So many people come up to me now and say it is a beautiful new coach. But I have to say it's 11 years old and they can't believe it. It looks new. However, inside there is more evidence of slight wear and tear especially with draperies.
I need a new set of tires. I knew this going in -- they are 7 years old this summer, but still have really good tire thread and no signs of side wall damage. They are Toyo's. I will replace next year with Michelin's I think unless someone convinces me Toyo's are decent. Have yet to do my research there.
Seller is a RV dealer near by where I am camping. They gave me 30 days warranty on everything so I am staying near to get service as I discover things.
I am soon to join the Beaver Ambassadors Club. But, would love to hear from other Beaver owners in RV.net too.
My coach come with Michelins and since then I have switched to Toyo's and my experience is that Toyo's are superior to Michelins. Made right here in Cypress, Cal.

RE: Gray tank sensors

Thanks everyone for your thoughts. I have been sitting awhile, so we'll see what happens after I drive tomorrow. I'll leave some water in the tank to swish around. Don't happen to have baking soda around. Is it okay to put the same chemical I use for the black tank into the gray tank?
Not sure what kind of chemical you use on the black tank. There are some blue stuff that are just for cutting the smell down. What you need is an enzyme type chemical. They sell them at Wal Mart. Drop a couple of tablets into both black and gray tanks and let it set until you are ready to dump again. It will clean out your inside of the tank and sensors.

I just went by the window on the selector pad. It has worked for several years now, so the key pad was correct.

RE: Buying a Used Class A

The low mileage is what would concern me because when a gasoline motor just sits gasoline starts the gel up and it ruins fuel injectors IF it has fuel injection, if it has carburetor same problem with jets plugging up. Take it out for a good run and check it out to see how it runs. The 454 hp chevy engine is a powerful engine gets around 7 mpg all the time. Check the tires to see if they are not over five years on the stamp date. Check for oil or fluid leaks. Sometimes when engines just sit the rear main seal will start to leak. You will see oil dripping between the engine and transmission.
Not sure about the price, you would have to look that up see how nada has it valued.
Good luck! Maybe you found a little jewel?

RE: Gray tank sensors

Ignore the sensors, they rarely work properly. Try some baking soda down the drain if it's really bugging you. Basically when the water starts coming up the shower drain it's time to empty the tank!
x2
This is the worst advice I have ever read. The reason is when the gray tank water starts to come up the shower it stinks terrible. Best thing is to solve the problem the right way. Many people are just too tight to use the proper chemicals that will keep the gray and black tanks clean. We use enzyme type solution. An organic substance that is produced in plant and animal cells and causes changes in other substances by catalytic action. We use Happy Camper. It is a bit expensive, but it keeps the sensors clean all the time and when you dump does not smell at all to where sometimes people that do not use anything run the neighbors out of the campground.

RE: Diesel or Gas, why is this a big thing for me?

There is no special license just because they have air brakes. I have the same license that I have had for driving my automobiles.
Ray, maybe in Barstow, but the OP is in Ontario Canada and we all know they do things a little different up there...:R
Ron
Yep! you are right. Thanks for calling it to my attention.

RE: Toad Brake-a-way

Much of this discussion is really a mute point. There are only 14 states (as of 2010) that do not require a break-away switch. Toed weight varies from state to state bus most say anything over 3 thousand pounds they are required. I didn't read all of the foot notes in the Trailer Life directory but the information is there. The one I use is from Night Shift Auto, Ready Brake, part # is RS 5000. The cable is connected to the frame of the MH so even if the receiver falls off. the brakes will still be applied. I don't know if it works and hope I never find out but at least I know it's there.
I'm curious about the states that require a brake a way system and especially how it's worded. If I remember correctly trailer equipped with surge brakes, like rental, boat trailer, and etc don't have break a way capablities. Could be wrong but I know the last UHaul I rented certainly did not seem to.
I'm wondering if the requirement was for trailers with electric brakes.
My boat trailer has surge brakes and it has a brake away. It is a cable that attaches to a handle on top of the hitch and to the master cylinder. If you happen to accidently come unhitched the cable will pull on that lever and lock the brakes on the boat trailer.

RE: campgrounds

In South Dakota I stayed at the Hart Ranch RV Park. It is close to every attraction offered in the area.
In Florida I stayed at two different places. I have stayed at Penny Thompson RV park which is close to the Florida keys and a real nice place to stay. And I also have stayed at a private rv park which is 1000Trails in Orlando. which is real nice, but it is a private club members only.
never been to Niagra Falls, so I can not help there.

I never have carried a spare tire. And you mentioned carrying one on the roof? Do you realize how much those things weigh? You don't need one on a dP.

RE: Toad Brake-a-way

If it is mechanical it can fail. There are many thing that can fail. There have been base plates that have come lose and nobody pays attention to checking them and there is one place of failure. The other is the yoke on the hitch itself can wear out and break. You could lose the pin that holds the tow bar. I bent one arm of my tow bar a couple of years back up in Pacific city, oregon just because I went down on a deep dip coming out of a rv park. Didn't break, but it could have.

RE: Gray tank sensors

If the gray tank is empty and you know that the tank is clean then maybe it needs to be calibrated. On mine when it was new I had to calibrate the lights and again on mine. not sure exactly what you have, but I removed the light panel off and in the back you can adjust the lights to match what ever it should be reading.
Hope that helps.

RE: CAT maintenance

I have the Cat 3126-E 330 hp and I do all the maintaining on my coach. Fact I washed the engine today with simple green then high pressure it with an electric black cat pump. Then I lubricated the fitting for the fan. About three weeks ago I changed the oil and filters. I also crawl under the coach and grease all the fittings every so often. I enjoy doing the work myself, that way I know it is getting done. One very important thing that I always stay on top of is checking the water level on the house batteries and washing them so that corrosion and acid does not build up.

RE: What did you do to your Class A MH today???

I got my black cat sprayer and washed the engine and CAC with Simple Green first and water after I done that, I crawled into the engine box under the bed and lubricated the fan pulley bearing. I gave it three good squirts of bearing grease. Had been reading a lot about failures because of lack of lubrication by Caterpillar engine owners.
Then I started her up and let her run awhile. Getting her ready for our next trip May 4th.-28th.

RE: Diesel or Gas, why is this a big thing for me?

I wouldlike a DP myself but am also tight with the money. I do not have much engine noise on my Newmar gasser. We noticed the extra insulation and quiet of this compared to the previous Pace Arrow. We drive around 5000 miles per year and that just fits with one oil change per year with Mobil 1. On a DP most are good for 15K miles and cost much more than my gasser. I go to Walmart for my oil change and the same man (Gaspar) has been doing it for the last 8 years. Pretty good for Walmart! I pay around $58. for the oil change each year. Gaspar also gets all of the grease fitting underneath. The oil change onthe DPis a couple hundred dollars and stillneeds to be done annually, even if the mileage is not there yet.
LOL! By reading your post I can tell you just talked yourself out of buying a DP. That is just fine, gasoline coaches are very nice also.

RE: Diesel or Gas, why is this a big thing for me?

If you are going to use the coach a lot I suggest you get a diesel. They are built better, better ride, engine lasts three times longer then gasoline engines.
The only draw back on diesel coaches is that diesel costs more. And really that should not be the case because diesel fuel is not a refined fuel like gasoline, but the oil companies have us right where they want us to be. It is call monopoly! But yes diesel is the way to go.
