RE: Traded Trucks

A word of caution....with all the hill climbing you do, be sure to watch out for all the slower moving rv's that are grinding up the hill:B you wouldn't want to run over anyone.....and at first, you might find yourself making unnecessary stops for fuel, but don't worry, that will pass.:B Enjoy the ride.... RE: Diesel vs gas......................

I've done real life tests for myself over many years and vehicles. And the conclusion is, they both work very well within their ratings. Youtube? That's your towing experience? Sam, Is that pic real? Gas around Tampa Fl is still about 40c cheaper than diesel. I paid $3.449 yesterday for 87 octane. I do miss my '01.5 Cummins though. Every time I see your sig pic.:B Yes, that is the real deal:( But the Shell brand around here is always higher than most stations, they always seem to be ten cents higher than most stations. Right now, diesel is about ten cents less than regular at most places, diesel has stayed pretty much the same, gasoline has crept up and passed it. My old Dodge tows pretty well, it is a great tow rig and my daily driver to boot, just about to start the second hundred thousand miles.... Sam

RE: Diesel vs gas......................

I gassed up yesterday...$3.659 for regular, $4.099 for diesel. This is pretty typical in this area. I'm jealous....... Sam

RE: Duramax oil drain plug drama

Not that I'm saying GM was right however the issue is that the engine is a diesel. They tend to vibrate a lot more then a gas engine and maybe this is why they all spec the drain plug with a higher torque then what the spec sheet say for that size bolt. Dodge/Cummins and Ford both do the same on their diesels. Don They do?:h My old bucket with a 22mm drain plug, the spec from Dodge/Cummins is 42lbs, which is quite low for a 22mm bolt. Sam

RE: Danica

Funny when the other drivers do it,like little whinney E,nobody makes a big deal out of it.A while back they even had the radio conversation of taking out another driver by someone else. Exactly......

RE: Duramax oil drain plug drama

That 62 lbs. looks way too much....my old bucket has a 22mm steel drain plug in a steel pan and only calls for 40 lbs on the plug. Sam

RE: K&N Air Intake

okay, back on track.....Why would it matter if it was a new or older gas or diesel engine?...., dirt(or silicone as it shows up on an oil analysis) is bad for any engine. Gas, diesel, turbo, supercharged, or normally aspirated. At least for me the K & N works just fine, and has for life of my truck, 12 years and almost 100,000 miles. On top of that, I am running extra fueling and 30% more boost than stock, and still no dirt in the oil. It works for me and will work just fine for others.....http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3097/3181517358_d71ea7455f_z.jpg

RE: Diesel MPG?

I have no dog in this fight as I am not currently a diesel owner, but food for thought, I recently made drastic changes to my driving style, specifically taking my girlfriend's 101hp :E Scion on ALL short errands and driving the speed limit instead of 5-10mph over it, and I was VERY surprised to go from the low-to-mid 14's to mid 17's. 2002 Land Cruiser, 4.7L V8, LT 285/75R16 E's, 4-sp Auto, full-time 4x4 (not good for mpg's, LOL). I have always been a skeptic when people claim great mileage, but I'm seeing first-hand that eliminating those short runs to the grocery and slowing down does make quite a difference. Yea, but what fun is that.....:W Sam

RE: Diesel MPG?

What gives with the fuel economy (or lack thereof)of diesels? I thought one bought a diesel at least in part for the fuel economy. I just read a consumer report test of all 3 major brand new diesel pick-ups and they stated 13 MPG as the overall mileage. My half-ton gas Chevy will average better than that even with all around town driving and will average 15 or 16 with some highway mixed in. I know one can't compare half with 3/4 ton but still 13 sounds terrible and would seem to diminish the advantage of diesel? Uh-oh, I smell a troll......:E The pollution control devices have killed the mileage and economic advantage on the new trucks..... those of us with the old iron still enjoy the mileage and performance advantages. But whether you have an older diesel or a new one, we don't have to suffer the agony of grinding up grade at 25 mph, small block screaming at 6000 rpm, holding up traffic.....:B:W Sam

RE: New Chevrolet and XM radio

After my trial subscription, XM offered me 6 months for $29.94 and they say that includes 3 months free. Or 1 year for $95 which includes 5 months free. I don't understand the math?? But I guess that's what they do. My question is, if I take the six months, what do they offer after the six months? Another question---On my last Dodge with Sirius, I didn't renew right away, let the subscritpion expire. A while later they called with a 50% off offer. Anyone know if XM is currently doing that? I let the XM free trial on our Element expire last month. A couple of days later I got an email with an $84 per year($94 total price) I called mentioning the 6 month deal was cheaper( 2 x $29 for 6 months). The salesman said yes it would be with the 6 month package but said that deal may not be around in another 6 months.....I took the $84 deal, now I do not have to worry about it for a year. It clearly states in the email that it is an automatic renewal in a year, at the then current rate, unless you call and cancel before the contract is up which is what I will do. As a side note, I bought the Element in Aug 2010, which had a three month trial for the XM service.....the free trial never stopped until March 2012....go figure. Sam

RE: 2002 Dodge Cummins 2WD Extended Cab Longbed 6 speed stick

thats what was known as an ho the nv5600 only came with a 4.10. put a fass lift pump and enjoy for a million mile. You could get the Ho option( in 2001 and 2002) with either a 3.54 or the 4.10 gear.....I have the 3.54 in mine. Sam

RE: 2002 Dodge Cummins 2WD Extended Cab Longbed 6 speed stick

I wouldn't worry too much about the book prices....Search the ads in your neck in the woods (craigslist, ebay, etc) and see what they are actually selling for. Offer them what it is worth to you....ten grand for a clean truck would be a nice deal, in my opinion. Sam

RE: 2002 Dodge Cummins 2WD Extended Cab Longbed 6 speed stick

If it is a good price, buy it. Rear disc brakes, good trans, big rear end. The lift pump is/was the only concern, which is easily fixed. Put an exhaust brake on it and you will have a darn good tow rig. If it has the 3.55 gear and you are keeping the trailer in your signature, it will be a great combo. Sam

RE: Smog Gear for Diesels and Fuel Consumption

You make some good points Larry. :) I had an old wise friend that once said: "The person that keeps his auto the longest is the TRUE conservative." I think you would have got along great with him Larry. :) The more I think about that statement the more I like it. I heartily agree with this...... Sam

RE: Smog Gear for Diesels and Fuel Consumption

"Judging by the attitudes expressed here (and elsewhere), I can just imagine the regulators sitting down and demanding quietly behind the scenes a program to make the light duty diesels extinct." You can't blame this on us, the wackos here in Kalifornia(spelled correctly), have always been, for decades, the pioneers of type legislation. Anything that makes a puff of smoke, from my barbeque, to my lawnmower, to my pickup, has been on the wackos hit list for years. Sam
