Road Service Comment

I have nothing but praise for the courtesy & helpfulness of your operators....and your service providers. The only issue I have occurred when we needed help. Our alternator failed, leaving us stranded on the side of the road...The Good Sam road service operators insisted on having us towed to an RV repair shop which was 8 miles closer than the Cummins repair shop we wanted to go to.....the result was 3 1/2 days to get a simple alternator replacement, with (it turned out) no adequate diagnostics, resulting in a second failure...... the Cummins shop would have been adequately equipped to diagnose & repair, probably in 1 day... Without us losing vacation time, incurring hotel & food expenses and tremenduous aggravation...

RE: Do you pull your toad with kayaks on it's roof?

We tow our Wrangler with a roof rack & kayak racks...carry 2 kayaks, strapped & tied front & back...also a bike rack in the receiver with 2 bikes....no issues...I think the concern may be the factory roof racks, not the kayak racks..many factory racks are rated for less than 75 lbs..........

RE: Learn Something New Every Day...

Wet cell batteries all out gas slightly when being charged...the problem with vaseline or other grease, is that it provides a place for the gases to condense & stay..... Before you clean your battery next time, try a little test...connect your voltmeter to the negative post of your battery & move the positive probe around the surface of the battery.....If you see any voltage reading, it is because of condensed battery acid on the surface (creating a conductor)..this will also cause a small self discharge situation....You can also clean your batteries with a specifically designed battery cleaner aerosol...it comes out as a usually yellow "foam", which if it contacts acid, will turn purple/red at the point of contact...the foam is then water rinsed away.........

RE: Quality of Dunlop tires

Actually, Dunlop is owned by Sumitomo, has been for probably 10-15 years...I put Sumitomo's on my 36' DP...like the ride, seem to be good tires....and were less expensive then the Dunlops.......

RE: BANG

Many drivers today believe that the car coming down the ramp has the right of way.......that traffic already on the highway has to yield to them.....I lost count of how many times I've had to slow / move over / etc to avoid an idiot entering 65mph traffic at 30mph..........usually in some sort of skateboard with a roof that wouldn't even be a speedbump....

RE: Driving Snow - Ok or no way?

We recently picked up our new to us 2001 37' Tradewinds, in Maine.. drove home to Albany, NY thru the Halloween weekend blizzard...parts of the Berkshire Mtns ended up with 34"..we came across 90 in 10" of fallen snow, whiteout, 25mph...not yet plowed or salted....the MH handled wonderfully....However, my shoulders & neck were sore for 3 days from the tension......Don't want to do it again...........

Heart Interface

Just bought a 2001 National Tradewinds...love it!! The previous owner disconnected the Heart Interface charger/inverter, saying the hum was so loud they couldn't sleep.....He has been charging the house bank with a multistage battery charger.....no inverter at all...
I can't imagine it would hum that loudly.....any thoughts???
I plan to re-connect it in the spring & see for myself.........

Good Sam Emergency Road Service

We had an interesting experience recently...for the short version, our alternator failed, flattened the batteries, needed a tow off the highway... Good Sam ERS was excellent...concerned, courteous, etc. They even called back every 20 minutes to check if the tow truck had arrived.......
Only one issue...they don't, in their choice of repair facilities, differentiate between "Motor"(chassis & drivetrain) and "Home" (house related) repair needs...We got towed to an RV shop, who were great people, however, totally not prepared or capable of handling the alternator replacement. They had trouble finding a new alternator, didn't have the tools or supplies, I even went out & bought them a can of Rust Penetrant.
I wanted to go to a Cummins shop, however, the RV shop was closer (8 miles vs 18). I probably should have "pushed" harder or offered to pay the difference for the added miles...sometimes in the middle of a mess you don't think completely thru............

National Tradewinds RV

My DW is lobbying for us to "upgrade" from our 1988 Xplorer 440 DP to a 1999 National Tradewinds DP... Any feedback on Tradewinds?? The one she likes is on a Freighliner chassis w/ Cat diesel, Allison Tranny, etc...

RE: Emissions inspection?

And there can be some fun...I have a HDVI on my 36' DP..got stopped at a middle of the road check point, manned by 2 deputy sheriffs.....they saw my registration sticker on the windshield, couldn't seem to figure out where the inspection sticker was.....since they had traffic stopped on a pretty good HILL, I just let them look.....finally, one of them checked the bumper & waved me on...

RE: Need help badly!!!!!!!!

mobilefleet....Ask any state DOT inspector about my post....I have been in the business of supplying fleet maintenance supplies for over 30 years...a vehicle with air brakes can be "redlined" (taken out of service) for the use of non-air brake fittings in the brake system... I understand that mergency repairs sometimes require going outside the box, however, that doesn't make the repair correct.... additionally, air brake fittings have a tube support built into them to prevent the Synflex (nylon brake tubing) from collapsing when the fitting is installed, the sleeve or ferrule is a totally different shape than a plumbing compression fitting, as is the fitting body & nut.
AND in the spirit that these forums is intended, I don't in the least appreicate your "rediculous" comment..... Perhaps you need to refresh your technical information.......
