RE: Handy Hints, Gadgets, Products & Gizmos

When you buy a new quilt or blanket they come in a rectangular heavy plastic cover that zips on and off. Don't throw them away, put them in your trailer. I store my extra blankets and sheets in them in the trailer. Keeps them clean and mildew free even with long-term storage in trailer. When the kids visit, the extra blankets and sheets are ready to go for them.

RE: Boondocking pet peeves, I really hate it when...

To find that your favorite spot at the lake has now been banned for camping by state regulations requiring a fire ring and state provided table. They want to shove us all into a "campground" (though no hookups) instead of letting us find our own sites. Absolutely ruined it! We camped there to get away from the "campground" atmosphere, where 3 to 4 of us could all be together....but not anymore!

RE: Handy Hints, Gadgets, Products & Gizmos

JiminDenver, what an awesome idea with the sheet. As soon as i read that I was, DOHH, why didn't i think of that. Thanks, we'll be trying that one.
Thank you. I can tell you that it was a lifesaver when we had record breaking heat that week. Not only did I have morning shade, it kept the TT cooler longer.
The table was in the was in the way or we would have put a second one up to completely cover the front. Twin sheets would make 1/2 shades.
Tom
You are right, I have seen the shades in the CW catalog since then, I'm sure they would look nicer than a sheet. That week we were a hour from a town and I had to come up with shade or drink my coffee in the TT with the AC on. With the morning sun being so low, a half shade or see thru shade wasn't going to work.
The guy next to us had a electric awning and did it after checking ours out. The early sun was worse for him because his awning was much higher and didn't tilt. His seemed to roll right up.
I like your use of a bed sheet. I use a fabric shower curtain. I clothes pin (or binder clip) it to the flap on the awning. Easy on, easy off. Or I also have awning hooks that slide in the groove on the awning and then hook through the holes in the shower curtain for a more secure hanging - but they take longer to take down if a sudden Wyoming "breeze" comes up.
I'll have to stock another bed sheet in the 5er. Good idea! Thanks for sharing.

RE: Handy Hints, Gadgets, Products & Gizmos

I have read many suggestions on how to keep toilet paper or paper towels from unrolling while traveling. Here is what I do:
I take a straight pin with a colored head and stick it in the the last sheet showing on the roll. The colored head helps locate it when we arrive. To keep track of the pin, I slide it in the side of the roll, parallel to the sheets, near the cardboard tube. Stays in place there until we travel again. Works every time.

RE: Round Kitchen Sinks

I also don't care for the double sink that has one of the sinks way too narrow. Only thing it is good for is to wash celery!
Give me an equal sized double sink like I used to have. Sigh...
With the round sink, would it be hard to find a dishpan to fit it? How big are they? I'll have to go look at some. Not sure I would like it either.

RE: Fellow campers are so great!

One year during a camping/fishing trip, we were camping across the road from 5-8 college age guys. Though they were having a good time, they were respectful and quiet during quiet time.
Our last evening there we were enjoying a great fish fry with all the fixings. But like the OP mentioned, we had too much food. So Camping Buddy and I fixed some dishes with fish, french fries and cole slaw and headed across the road.... We walked into their camp with steaming food (except the slaw) and you would have thought Santa Claus had appeared! We asked "Is anyone here hungry?" The look on those guys' faces was Priceless. We got a chorus of "Yes! Ma'am!" We handed them the dishes and went back to our camp.
A bit later, the entire bunch of them came across the road to thank us. Told us they had balogna sandwiches and chips and that was fine, they were camping....but that meal was such a treat! They visited a while and then wandered back across the road. What nice young men and I think that evening will have a lasting memory for all of them as well as for us.
You are right cartervan, Fellow Campers ARE so great!

RE: Secure your coolers

I wired up an old motion activated light fixture I had at home and made it portable. I keep it set to stay on the max time when activated. Haven't had any problems since, lights usually send the cockroaches scurrying away.
LOL...I thought about that too. My original thought was to pee in one of the bottles and put the top back on it it and put it in there at night. But my wife said they would get mad and do something to our trailer. So then I thought about leaving a sign that says one bottle has pee in it, take your chance. lol
But can you imagine - if - the next morning you see your sign has been edited to read, "Now 2 bottles have pee in them!"
Yikes!:(

RE: Music or not at the camp site?

I am one of those grumps when people are inconsiderate.
We respect their place and time outside and would like them to do the same for us.
We camp for the quiet and the beauty of our surroundings. That is why we boondock and try very hard to be a good neighbors and keep distance from others to avoid crowding anyone...Though at the lake that is sometimes difficult to do.
We don't want to rain on anyone's good time but if their music is overpowering, I will go ask them to turn it down a bit.

RE: Texas Tornados

DD, DS, SIL, and a 90 year old Aunt all live in the DFW area. Frightening few hours as we waited for the "we are all fine" calls to start coming. Prayers said and answered for our family.
Surprised at the few injuries reported. It could have been so much worse.
Alot of property damage and that is bad. But I heard a lady yesterday say that her family was all unhurt and that most of their "things" can be replaced. And that all her neighbors were pitching in to clean up the neighborhood rubble.
God Bless the American Spirit!

RE: Camping & Electronics

My DS and his family came last summer to spend a week with us at the lake. His rule to the kids was "play the games while we drive, when we arrive we put them away and have family time"
Unfortunately, it was cold and rainy the entire 6 days. We played alot of cards and dominoes and watched a couple of movies but the little guy has mild autism and couldn't get the card rules straight. DS allowed this sweet child to have his Gameboy which entertained him and kept him happy.
There is a time and a place for all things. We were glad to have something that helped us have a Wonderful visit with our family.

RE: Keystone 5th wheel

We love our Cougar! Looked at many other brands before buying it and some were very nice. Our decision was based on price, floor plan and fit & finish. We have had some minor things come up, but nothing DH couldn't handle.
Best wishes for Happy Trails!

RE: Tips on trip thru Northwest

Don't forget Devil's Tower in NE Wyoming. They have a wonderful RV campground inside the park right across from the base of the tower. I think it is dry camping - any one know? There is also a campground right outside the park.
Custer State Park in South Dakota! Gorgeous! Also the 1800 train ride from/to Keystone is fabulous!

RE: Latest Mess Ups

Years back, we were so excited about taking our new to us Winnebago Brave the 900+ miles to Oklahoma to be with the family for Christmas.
Stopped the first night in Kansas, fired up the generator to heat our dinner in the microwave... microwave won't work.... So, heated the spaghetti on the stovetop.
After our wonderful trip, we got back home in Wyoming and mentioned what had happened to our Camping Buddy. He walked out to the Brave, opened the generator door and plugged it into the RV........
DUH! Sure wish we had known it had been unplugged and when.

RE: ceramic heaters?

We always carry a Big Buddy heater with us. If we are stuck inside because of weather, we use it rather than using the heater in the 5er. Easy to set up and we are warm in just a few minutes. Sure saves on the batteries, we don't need to start the generator to recharge.

RE: Storm windows or insulated covers?

We use the Reflectix at home during the week. We use the pop open type of windshield shades while in camp. The shades fit perfectly over the bedroom windows under the day/night blinds. In the mornig just twist them shut, and store.

RE: New MotorHome Website

I am disappointed in the last couple of editions of Trailer Life. This month I found 15 pages of rvs for sale at the back of the magazine. Gone is the 2-3 pages of 10 minute tech (now barely 1 page), the what's new on the market (I can't recall the name of this article) has been downsized - these are 2 examples of what I so enjoyed when I first subscribed years ago.
I understand the need to sell advertizing for a magazine to continue to operate but 15 pages?
I keep my subscription because there are still some great parts of the magazine. I do enjoy seeing the featured RV with the floorplans shown, and the travel and help articles, etc.
Just wish the changes would change back.
