RE: trip from amarillo north to red river, nm

Sherry
Wow, never thought I'd see a poster from Serepta, La. My parents were from the Vivian/Oil City area.
Roadrunner is probably the best park in Red River if you can stand the management. Really not much to do in Red River in the summer except 4wheelin but it's beautiful country.
Bobcat pass is easy going N. but is twisting and pretty steep coming down and when you get to the bottom you're in a 25/30mph. speed zone.
Whenever we go back to the area we will stay in Eagle Nest, about 16mi. south and use it as a base camp to go to Red River, Angel Fire and Taos.
Enjoy

RE: 1994 Grand Cherokee limited 4 x 4

We had an 02 Limited w/ V8. As said if the 4WD had 2 shift levers on the floor with the transfer case having a positive Neutral you can tow it. Just shift it to N and then put the tranny in D or R and if it doesn't do anything you're good to go. Put the tranny in P and the key in the Aux position. Next to our 1st toad, a 91 Honda Accord 5spd. it was the easiest to hook up and go.
Just remember the GC is heavy especially the limited, 5000lb.+ and you're driving a fairly large Gas coach. You will definitely need an auxiliary braking system for it.
I've said all the good things I know about the GC.
Good luck on your adventure

RE: KVH R5SL dome and Direct TV

Brobox
Yes, I removed the cover and everything looked dry and clean like the day it was installed almost 3yrs. ago. Could see no corrosion on the visible contacts. BUT I guess that it has been taking longer to lock onto the sat and haven't used the in-motion in quite a while as our inverter is not operating. There wasn't any obstruction where we were parked, had been there 2 days with the normal good reception. This was in the early AM and there was dew on the dome and roof. With the cover off the antenna would turn and go up and down sometimes but not every time I would turn it on although it would never stop and go up and down like it was hunting. It did stop a couple of times about 90degrees from the satellite direction here at our house. Our old Datron open dish would hesitate like that when it was getting a nibble then adjust and lock in.
Thanks

KVH R5SL dome and Direct TV

Last week while at a rally near Lafayette, La. got up one morning, made coffee and turned on the TV. Fox News, channel 360 was the last thing it had been on. It wouldn't come in, could go up or down the channels and everything was there but not 360, signal meter showed a weaker than normal signal. Switched to regular TV for local and everything worked fine, back to DTV and everything went downhill. Did the pull the card, press the red button, unplut the receiver, turn off the dish and each time we lost channels. Searching for signal is all that it says now. The dish makes a sort of grinding sound and sometimes makes the sound of searching, but not often. Called DTV and they ran a check on our receiver, sent a message to it but never got it. Talked to KVH & they referred me to a local tech place but they were too busy to get me in. Waiting to hear from a local to us KVH dealer/repair facility to have them look at it. Even tried a spare receiver we have here when we went to HD. Tried setting up a portable dish on a tripod here with no success.
Any ideas would be appreciated

RE: SF Bay to Mobile, AL in June. I-40 or I-10

I'll assume you're being transferred. Enjoy the Gulf Coast, it grows on you quickly. To me the 1st order of business is stay out of the Metro L.A. area so I-40 would be my choice. That's some desolate country till you get into Az. but then gets better across N.Az and NM., main thing is you have some elevation so it should be cooler. The US287 route from Amarillo to Ft. Worth is a good hwy. 4lane all the way I believe and some small towns. Take I-20 to the South side of Dallas and it's clear sailing to S-Port. I-49 is boring but good. If you have time, spend a day or 4 in Lafayette and eat some serious Cajun food.
Have a safe trip.

It's love bug time again on the Gulf Coast. UGGH

Miss Sue and several ladies went to a Red Hat conference yesterday about 60mi. from here and came back with the front of her White Pilot covered with those critters. I had only seen 1 here at the house but it was full grown. Usually don't see them till mid May and then again in Sept. Probably due to the extra mild winter we had. On any light colored vehicle, it's sort of like Sycamore leaves from your neighbor's tree in your yard. Doesn't take many to make a real mess.

RE: Replacement Icemaker/Repair Floor Slide

Don
Much less than $200, +- $50 @ Lowes. Easy change out with 4 bolts and explicit instructions.
As far as the step cover, check out the distribution valve in the genny compartment. It will be attached to the firewall above the genny. I air line inlet and 2 outlets. That's what makes it work but when the cover is extended look under it and there is an air cylinder that actuates to extend or retract it.
Been there doen that.

RE: Indian Nation Turnpike

Only been on that road 1 time. Same route as you're stating. Seemed very rough just out of Hugo then smoothed out then a toll booth, seems like it was +-7.00 for MH and toad as we neared McAllester there was another toll booth @ near the same price then the exit was about 100yds. ahead. "RIP OFF".

Several yrs. ago we had an old HP, 4in1, printer, fax, copier, scanner that finally quit on us. Did some shopping and found a Canon MX310 4in1 for less than $100 @ Circuit City as they were going out of business. Good quality pring and pretty fast.

RE: Congratulations to Tiger

Yes he played an excellent tournament like the Tiger of past. Sort of like the kind of horses I like, Break on top and improve their position. The guy has been a fantastic talent since he came onto the Tour, but the field had to improve to match him and they did. The gripe about "It's in the hole" I agree with but Bubba, et.al hit it farther. My problem with Tiger has been the Media, they just gush over his every shot. Even when he's out of the competetion they show his every shot while not showing the leaders making good shots. All the networks and especially the Golf Channel, Chamblee and Nobilo are sickening in their worship of the guy. As much as I love watching the Masters, I'm starting to dread it.

RE: Visited Tiger Stadium & met Mike.

Thanks Lawrence, you made my day.
He's quite a Kitty Kat. At home games he is brought into the stadium in his trailer with all the Cheerleaders riding on top. Makes the tour all the way around then they get off and coax him to roar, naturally with mirophones all around the trailer and when he does the stadium just goes wild.
Seems like that other team from Alabama wants to be known as the Tigers but can't afford one, just a bird and something called a Plainsman.
Thanks again

RE: Sean Payton - Saints suspended

We live in the Metro Big Easy so that's the big story here. We're not really Saints fans but I do have a T-shirt of a Pig with a Saints helment and wings that our daughter gave me after the Super Bowl Win.
The fans are irate at Goodell over the severity of the punishment. Tom Benson the owner seems to be coming out scot-free in the deal although the orginization is fined 1/2 Mil. After Katrina when the SuperDome was a shambles Benson moved the team to San Antonio where he had made his forture in Banking and Auto Dealerships. He had wanted to do this for a long time and now was his chance but Paul Taglibue stepped in and said no you won't, you can't do that to the people of N.O. so they came back, playing some "Home Games" in Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge. The state kicked in a bunch of $$$$$$$ to improve the Dome, Benson has all the concessions, parking, etc. and the Dome is now called the Mercedes Benz Superdome. Benson is a Mercedes dealer. Figure it out yourselves.
My contention is: The next Superbowl is here in N.O. and the Saints had a legitimate chance of being in it. Never have had a "Home Team" in a SuperBowl, can't start now.
Now some in Congress want a piece of the action on a very popular subject, this being driven from of all places, Chicago, go figure.

RE: If you could have one car back

It's still sitting in my driveway. A 98 Blazer that is just about bullet proof. Still looks good w/no rust. My daily driver since retiring in 02, pretty much like the Timex watch and the Bunny.
I plan on keeping it till it can get an Antique license or pass it on to one of the Grandsons.

RE: Texas Route

Jane
Guess I'm missing something here but it seems like a lot of backtracking. You would be starting from your listed home, near I-40/Kingman, right?
Mileage wise it would be shorter to take 40 all the way to Memphis then S on US61 to Tunica. Do your visiting there then on to Hattiesburg then angle down to Mobile and on to Fla. Don't know what your itenerary is in Fla. After visiting the Fl. panhandle beache (Panama City/Destin, etc.) you will be disapointed in the Texas beaches unless you go all the way down to S. Padre. You'll enjoy San Antonio and from there take US90W across Tx. to Marathon or Alpine where you turn S. toward Big Bend. With the price of fuel on everyones mind that's a pretty ambitious trip.
Hope this helps.

RE: Big RV park in Rayne, LA??

Gary
We go to Rayne several times a yr. with our FMCA chapter. It's one of the few places in So. La. that has the physical facilities large enough to handle our rallys, 200 to 230 coaches. Rayne is basicly a bedroom community for Lafayette and does not have a public transit system so if you have a toad I'd bring it. Crowley is the closest town and has some good restaurants and a Wally World. Lots of shopping in Lafayette for the girls and some very good golf courses. There is a Winn Dixie super market about 200yds from the edge of the park you can walk to.
Go to Google Earth and you can get a pretty good view of the place, just So. of I-10 and W. of La.35.
Enjoy Acadiana

Just look in your campground guide or RV Park Reviews for Cottondale, Al. There's a couple of parks sort of side by side just off of I-59. Nothing fancy but full hookups.

RE: electric water heater red light

A common problem. The light will come on when the AC element is turned on but they aren't very trustworthy. If you're in doubt about whether the electric element is heating, turn everything off, start the genny and turn on the electric water heater, you will hear the genny load up if it's working.

RE: fuel tank

Sacs TC
This won't help you on the removal and welding but Monaco tends to use the same equipment on different coaches. Yep the fuel tank will slide out of the side bay door, not easily but it will. While you have it out put the tape to it and do the math, it just might hold a lot more fuel than stated. I put 106 gal in our 100 gal. tank and the genny was still running. Later, got under the coach and put the tape to the tank and it should hold 140+ gal.
Good luck on your project.

RE: Safe Overnight Between San Antonio and Tucson?

youth4him
We're planning a similar trip later this yr., only starting from the Big Easy. It's 500+ mi. to S.A. The big thing is to leave N.O. early enough to get thru Houston by 2PM. then still another 200mi. We've done it several times so it's do-able, just a long day. From S.A West is another story. Assuming you stay on the West side of town/Boerne. From there you can get pretty far West, even Las Cruces. Done that too, exept from Fredericksburg, also a long-long day but you gain an hour going West but driving (Butt) time is still the same. Quite a few places to stay N. of El Paso and in Las Cruces and even more in Deming, NM. From either it's just a short days drive over to Tuscon.
How long are you going to be in the Big Easy?

RE: 4 down dinghy SUV which will tow 5000 lbs

I have to say this for the Grand Cherokee Limited, we had a 2002 Limited withe the 4.7 V-8, 4WD Quadradrive. All the power ever needed and would turn on a dime. I've pulled some heavy loads with it as well as pulling a few motorhomes out of mud holes at rallys. Absolutely the easiest vehicle I've ever towed as far as set up. Put the transfer case in N, shift it to D then R w' no result then to park. Tow it as fast and far as you could stand. It's heavy though, +-5000#. Towed well with the Blue Ox tow setup. Then we go to the elctronics, well Miss Sue started calling it the Ghost Car. Stuff would come on or quit working on it's own without warning, turn signals, headlights while parked, you name it. Not even gonna talk about the front differential overhaul, $1300, heater overhaul where they had to tear the whole dash innside and out off, $900 + 4 driver's door window regulators as well as a passenger and driver, side rear door regulator at $250+ each. Thank goodness Miss Sue's nephew is the parts manager at the Jeep place, no other repair shops want to even work on them.
Great car on the highway though, set the cruise on 75 on the Interstate and it will get 21MPG just loafing all day if you can afford all the other expenses.
Lots of folks love them but I wouldn't wish one on my worst enemy.
