RE: Wisconsin repeals fee for train pulls

Thank you, C.B. and Lil Truckr for the replies. We haven't pulled anything behind the 5er, but may consider in the future. C Is the frame on the rear of the fiver strong enough for the added weight & twisting of the load you haul? I would guess that every fifth-wheel owner would have to decide that for themselves. In my case I built my fivers hitch myself. I used heavy duty steel and made sure my Harley would be safe back on its trailer. I have noticed that some new campers already come with a two inch receiver mounted on their rear from the factory so they should be ready to go if their owners decide to pull a small boat or trailer behind the camper...

RE: Wisconsin repeals fee for train pulls

Can you give the State Statute that the DOT referenced? Thanks. C The only thing listed on the letter is Act 59 of 2011. I can scan the letter and e-mail it to someone if they want it. Just drop me a private message. Otherwise there is no other info other then the normal requirements for trailers, etc.

RE: Wisconsin repeals fee for train pulls

A couple weeks ago I received a letter from the Wisconsin Dept of Transportation advising me that the law requiring people who pull a boat, ATV or other toy behind their fifth-wheel or travel trailer has been repealed. We are still limited to the total length to 65 feet or less plus the camper must be equipped with brakes...So if your 75 years old you should be able to pull a longer load than that, if you do please post the hwy's you will be on so I can stay home or take another road. What in the world are you talkin about? Nothing in what I posted mentioned 75 year old age.

Fiver hitch question

Greetings all, I got a buddy who just purchased a used fiver. This will be his first fiver and he wanted me to ask about the hitch he got with the unit. Its a 16K Reese and it came with both rails, underside brackets and bolts. This is where the question starts. He drives a '01 Dodge extended cab, diesel powered, dually, long box plus this one-ton truck comes with factory installed overload system. He was told that because of this overload system he will need some special brackets for the trucks frame. Does anyone know if these special brackets are a must or can the L-brackets he got with the hitch will work? If he does need to get special brackets would youe know where he could find them and maybe even a part number. Thanks in advance!

RE: Where to go in Florida ??? Send us somewhere

FLA-GYPSY You made my point, it gets COLD in north Florida in Jan and Feb, most snow birders want warmer then 30 deg at night, spending a bundle to get to warm weather I expect warm weather. Those occasional 32* nights lead to 75*+ days. It doesn't get much better than that unless you just like that rat race down south. I clicked on the link to your camping photos and was greeted with pop ups about "Virus Protection". I had to throw my computer into forced shutdown to keep their******from being loaded to my computer, because everybody knows those places "infect" your computer so they can swoop in and "save" it for a fee. You ought to take down the link to your photos. I was going to say something about the rat race down here, so now I'll try to say it without sounding snippy. There are lots of snowbirds in Ft Myers, for a very good reason, it's warm here. But the tourists are a minor segment of the population. And they all go to the same places. At any given time of day half of them occupy SR 41, the other half is in Walmart. They go to Fort Myers Beach. There are 5 other beaches. There are 3 freeways to take the congestion off of SR 41. If you go to Target it's so vacant you'll wonder if they're closing. Avoiding the crowds is about as difficult as stepping out of the path of a moving bus. Lee County has an amazing infrastructure to handle tourism. In the places I frequent the "crowds" are flocks of birds, alligators & manatees. Reading about Fort Myers is quite interesting...we moved down there in 2004 and stayed for a year. During that time I was totally surprised by the amount of crime that goes on there. After only a couple weeks of seeing and hearing about the crime and shootings I went and got a concealed gun permit. I know what your thinking, that this guy is over reacting, but being a retired cop I know what I'm talking about. If you decide to spend time in the Fort Myers area ALWAYS be aware of your surrounding and people around you. There are some very dangerous areas there, as there are is all big cities that you need to stay out of especially at night, so ask a local and I'm sure they will advise you. Other then that little problem, there is lots to do and see in Fort Myers. We especially enjoyed the Fort Myers Beach area. Getting there can be a challenge with the heavy traffic but its well worth the time spent sitting in traffic.

RE: Where to go in Florida ??? Send us somewhere

If you get to the Kissimmee area stay at the Tropical Palms RV resort. This is a great base for hitting all the tourist attractions in central Florida...Whenever we head down there this is always our base...love this place.

RE: Lights under 5th wheel

stick a jumper wire in the slot on each side of the keyway guide on your 7 male plug on the light cord of your trailer on the hitch pin, also if you want to make all your maker lights and taillights flash on and off just buy a heavy duty 2 pin flasher unit that goes in an auto for the flashers just make sure its the one with the prongs at 11 o'clock & 1 o'clock, it really comes in handy if you have to leave your trailer on the side of the road to go get help with your TV. Yup, what he said...The flasher is neat also but it gets irritating after a while watching the clearance lights flashing...at least to me. :S

RE: Lights under 5th wheel

Another fun thing to do with lights is to put a wire jumper in the two plug slots one on either side of the bump on your trailer plug. This will turn on all your campers lights giving a nice effect.

RE: Campground Extra Charges

If the reviewer was miffed about the extra charge why wouldn't he just wait the extra 35 minutes on the side of the road until the noon check in? Obviously the cg feels they can fill the full hook up sites for 3 days so is requiring a minimum stay of that length. If they made it two then they would lose a day's revenue from that site. Some call it gouging, I would call it good business sense. Water and electric sites require a two day minimum so the "weekender" could use one of those. We spend some time in that part of the country. Decent campground space is hard to find if you are transient, especially full hookup, and space is expensive. My guess is this park is full every weekend. Interesting posting. Here in the mid-west there is no such a thing as three day minimum unless its over a holiday which I understand. I guess things just range differently all across this great nation...

RE: Campground Extra Charges

I'm sure not everyone put there full faith in RV Parks Reviews but its someplace to start when exploring a place to camp. I always check with this site just to get a feel what others have experienced at campground. Good or bad it gives someone info on what may be ahead.

RE: Campground Extra Charges

I went to this campgrounds web page and could not find any info about charges for early arrival. I for one would tell them to stick it. When I checked their rates I noticed that they have three day minimums for weekend camping along with very huge fees. I feel this is ridiculous. Most campers come for a Friday and Saturday evening leaving on Sundays. This three day minimum for weekends is just a way to gouge their customers. I for one would never camp at this place...

RE: Sewer smell when I empty tanks

We had this very problem last weekend. We had not used our 5er for a few weeks so when we got to the campground I just hooked up the Lectric and water line and had a beer. After a while we started to get that crappy sewer smell in the coach. I was puzzled to where the smell came from until I dumped some water into the shower drain...once I did that, no more smell. I figured the water in the p-trap had evaporated while it was sitting and this allowed that nasty smell to come into the coach via the shower floor drain...like one other guy said "lesson learned".

RE: A warning to all campers

If you haven't already make sure you rate this campground at: http://www.rvparkreviews.com/index.html I never visit a campground before checking with this site to see what others have experienced at a particular campground...
