RE: Annual Spring Gathering @ Turning Stone, May 18-20th,2012

Mark, Thanks for putting this together... It never ceases to amaze me how much we enjoy this gatherings... We had many but not all of our favorites plus we had some really nice new folks.. Hopefully we will be able to camp with them again. It helped that we had especially good weather... The wood for the campfire that was supplied by Bruce was dry, so minimal smoke and the pot luck exceeded all expectations. The only real disappointment was that we missed some of our great friends...and ............ Mr. dipstick how can I cheat next and bore you to death with my personality won the all star.... I really think Larry is avoiding me on two occasions I arrived hours after he had left. We really need to work on getting the whole group together... I was hoping we would be able to hook up in the fall with the southern group but we will be out west... I am having withdrawal symptoms from camping without Dave's coach providing the entertainment... Johnny

RE: Amish cooling unit

The clicky will take you to a web site that sells them... Basically an outfit called Pines RV Refrigeration builds them. This is an Amish company that designs and builds gas adsorption refrigerators and freezers of all sizes for the Amish. The Amish cooling unit is fabricated from heavier materials than the OEM Norcold cooling unit. While I did not count the coils my recollection is that there appeared to be more coils in the Amish cooling unit at least for my application. With the OEM cooling unit we kept the temperature control set on 7 we run the Amish unit at 5 to achieve the same temperature... JohnnyT

RE: Same money, older higher end coach or newer not as nice one

Our coach just hit the 100,000 mark...Since my coach has been well taken care of (maintenance based on manufacturers recommendations). I have no concerns about the power train (engine, transmission, rear end). When the coach hit 100,000 miles I took it to the spartan factory where they perform a comprehensive 44 point inspection. Based on the inspection I had the tie rods and ride height valves replaced..In another 30,000 miles I will be looking at replacing ball joints. All other suspension components in good order. There is still 75% of the brake shoes So if I were looking at a used coach of the same caliber as mine on a similar chassis I would be interested in how it was maintained. Plus how it lived. Once I got past the chassis and power train... I would be focusing on; Water tight integrity. Sign of water leaks, seal viability.. An Age issue Latches locks and doors. Ease of operation... An indication of owner care and maintenance. Rust and corrosion. If visible in easy visible areas expect it to be in critical areas not easily visible, or easily accessible. Electrical...Generator, inverter, batteries....Function, performance and longevity. Tires.... Condition , age Acceptability of appliances, and electronics. Both age and mileage can be an issue but with the proper care the effects of both can be a non issue. Another consideration is the environment that the coach has lived and operated in; If parked or stored is an salt water area, or operated on road where snow or ice agents have been deployed. How protected when parked. How protected when stored. Duration of inactivity. Inactivity will accelerate the issue of dry rot on rubber components. There are tremendous financial benefit and opportunity for buying an older quality coach. The absence of due diligence is a guaranteed trip down the slippery slope of buyer remorse. Buying a used coach requires luck or savvy. Without either is not a place I would want to be... Savvy and due diligence pays the most rewards... JohnnyT Moderator

100,000 Mile club

Well I just joined the club... I have driven my motorhome over 100,000 miles. Our Motor home had 23 miles on it when we took delivery July 25, 2003. We journeyed to the Spartan Factory and had them do their major inspection, and do all the service of all fluids, and filters... Plus fix whatever they found... I left their feeling like I had a new chassis under me.:B The experience was not cheap but I was pleased with the value... To qualify this I either do the service or have it done in our shop. Service at the Spartan factory is an experience that I intend to repeat... JohnnyT

RE: Toad Tire lock up

Use the Roadmaster EvenBrake. Never a problem. Tow a Saturn Vue. Yesterday all 4 tires locked up. Green fuse pulled. Always worked before. First my dash sensor went off, telling me to charge battery in Vue. Said was 12.7 volts. What's wrong with that??? Then doing 60, started to slow gently and all 4 on the toad locked up. what a smoke screen. "Were" new tires, and in 100 feet wore a flat spot almost to tire wear bear. Now, $500 more for new tires. Had battery checked, fine. Any ideas? This is the topic of this thread Please stay on topic! JohnnyT Moderator

RE: Campsite size for big motorhomes - 45 ft or more

Its been a while since I bought one but the big rig book was not that helpful for me. The information you need is in Woodalls or Trailer life. Both will tell you the site lengths and whether or not the campground is big rig friendly. You can also search for campgrounds in RV park reviews with big rig as a search argument. Here is how I find campground with sites long enough.. I first plan my route... Then I use the Trailer Life Campground Navigator that will display campgrounds along the route I am planning. It will allow you to filter out campgrounds that do not meet your requirements... It will also tell what the length of the sites are... Then I go to rvpark reviews and make my selections... We are always looking for easy in easy out and long pull throughs. Access to and from the campground is also a consideration so I scope that out..Often there will be comments in the reviews if there is an issue with access. Often the number of sites that will accommodate you will be limited so depending on the time of year your will need to make advance reservation... This is especially true at destination locations... RE: Blue Ox tow bar maintenance

Larry, sent you a text message I am currently in site 10 at blue Ox.. This is my second time here.. The camp ground is great!... But what is really special is the commitment to service these folks have. Taking the factory is a must ...Doing so will make one feel even better about there choice of tow bar and base plate... These folks are committed to qulaity and take pride in what they produce.. JohnnyT

RE: Keep the "Old" Tow Bar

Without know the condition of your existing tow bar this is a hard question to answer, Tow bars do have wear components and need to be periodically serviced. Also how they are stored when not in use is a factor. I think I would be looking at what the shipping costs would be to have it serviced/rebuilt, or for a major rally or rv show where road master and blue ox often will be there to service towbars. My tow bar has 98,500 miles on it pulling a heavier dinghy... It been rebuilt once and we are headed to blue ox this week to have it done again. JohnnyT

RE: GOOD SAM HIGHWAYS NORCOLD article

Folks let get a grip. There have been refrigerator fires. I have never seen any reliable documentation on how many, which specific models or what the cause was. Obviously the manufacturer believed that there was enough of a potential fire hazard that recalls were issued. We have had a steady barrage of threads... Most of which are filled with anecdotal declarations trying to maximize as well as those attempting to minimize this issue. Unfortunately the rhetoric usually leads to trolling and flaming... And as it has in this case derailed the thread. I would prefer to not close this thread... Or have to remove or edit any more posts. JohnnyT Moderator

RE: Banks PowerPack Worth the money ?

This is a pretty subjective topic... There seems to be a number of opinions expressed here that do not indicate their personal experience as a qualifier for their opinions. I bought a one ton diesel truck with a banks system. The power, fuel economy is much better than its predecessor which was essentially the same truck sans the banks system. Based on my experience if I were looking to upgrade my torque and HP I would give Banks a hard look. I think that there are alternatives that may be less expensive. JohnnyT Moderator
