RE: Adults Only RV Parks

We are in a great 55+ park in SW FL. To qualify, at least one member must be 55+. So if you're over 55 and married to some cute young thing, you still qualify. :) Children and grand-children are permitted to visit. Not sure if there's a time limit. Our park is not in any CG guide so here's the address: Live Oak RV Resort 12865 SW Highway 17 Arcadia, FL 34269 800-833-4236 Although it says Arcadia, we're about 12 mi. from Arcadia and about 8 from Punta Gorda. We love it here - it's our 13th year. :)

RE: Chattanooga, TN To Columbus, GA Bypassing Atlanta

If you have a passenger with you, you can use the HOV lane thru Atlanta. That makes the trip almost a breeze.

RE: I75 bridge between Cincinatti and Kentucky

Maybe you folks who live in the area can help on this one: the I-275 - I-471 bypass seems a lot shorter than taking I-275 west all the way around but I never see anything about that route. Is there some reason for not recommending that for a bypass of the bridge area?

Great light timer for snowbirds

If you haven't headed south yet you may want to check out the Intermatic DT620CL. It's a great timer for snowbirds who are gone over the daylight savings time changes or just for long periods of time. It is a programmable, intelligent timer. It automatically adjusts itself for daylight savings times. It also can be programmed to turn on at sunset rather than a fixed time - you tell it what part of the country you live in and it apparently uses a sunrise/sunset table to determine the "on" time. So, if you head south in Jan. it will turn on around 5 PM, standard time. By the time you return home in April it will be turning on around 8PM daylight time. We have been using a variation of it for a few years now and we leave it on all year to control a lamp in the living room. That way there is no variation to the pattern of lights when you're gone. It uses a battery so power failures do not affect it. It sells for about $20 on Amazon and you might be able to find it at a place like Home Depot. No, I'm not a salesman - just sharing info about a very practical product. :)

RE: I 75 Construction

We just came through there yesterday (Mon, 11/21) around noon. No tie-ups and no construction. Traffic was heavy as usual but no slow downs. The "speed limit 55, your speed XX" signs were showing mostly mid-60s. ;)

RE: ONLY One Construction Delay on I-75

JimK - We came thru on Saturday, October 29, 2011. There were signs announcing the bridge work and four lanes were reduced to two. That created a pretty long backup starting right where the two lanes exit to the right to continue on I- 75. I could not see the bridge work itself since I was in the right lane surrounded by trucks and other traffic. The KY Dot site says it was to continue until Dec. 1, 2011. BUT, No mention of when the start date was. I think I may have found the answer for why you hit it and we didn't. I checked a couple of traffic reporting web sites. They seem to say the construction work is on nights and weekends only. We went thru during the day on Friday. On our way back for the holidays we'll be going thru there on a Monday so the construction shouldn't be a problem. (With fingers tightly crossed!)

RE: snowbirds and truck stops

Flying Js have seperate parking for RVs so you are not taking a space from a trucker and you are not among all the running diesels. We usually stopped at the Knoxville Flying J. It's well lit and we did not feel unsafe.

RE: ONLY One Construction Delay on I-75

I'm a little confused here - we just came down to FL from Cleveland last Friday, 10/28. I-71 joins I-75 just north of the bridge going to Covington and we saw NO construction and had no delay crossing the bridge. This was around 11:15AM. So, just where is this construction and might it affect us northbound when we head back north for the holidays in a couple of weeks?

RE: If you could only go to one, Glacier or Banff . . . . . .

We visited Glacier and then continued northward to Banff. Glacier was spectacular but Banff is even more impressive! We agreed that we were glad we visited Glacier first because after Banff it would have seemed ho-hum. And make sure you spend time at Lake Moraine and Lake Louise. In fact, one of the pics we took at Lake Moraine is now my wallpaper on this computer. And take the time to go over to B.C. and visit Yoho National Park to see Emerald Lake, the Spiral Tunnels, and Takakkaw Falls.

RE: Did we miss any attractions on our list by Fort Myers?

Add Corkscrew Swamp as a must - a well done tour on a boardwalk thru the swamp area by the Audobon Society. Also, The Shell Factory is an interesting place to visit.

RE: Cook Forest, Pa - Dump Station??

We used to be regular campers in Cook Forest - first time we went was 1968! We went thru the full tent, tent trailer, pop-up, and travel trailer cycle. Now that we're "seniors" and have a nice, comfortable TT, we have switched to Kalyumet. It is very close to the forest, has large wooded sites, and full hook-ups. The owners are a friendly couple and they have activities almost every weekend. They have very clean bath house facilities, a small camp store, and, during warmer weather, a big swimming pool. One thing we consider a real plus is that they have a cabin and some motel-like rooms that can be rented. We went with several family members a couple of years ago and couldn't fit all of them in our unit so some stayed in the motel room.

RE: I-75 Atlanta construction

Thanks for all the feedback. We've been making that trip for the past 13 yrs. and twice a year for the last 4 yrs. That post on Streets and Trips had us wondering about checking out a possible alternate but it sounds like it's just the usual Atlanta traffic. Several years ago we started using the HOV lane and it has been great! When you hit that criss-crossing of 20, 85, etc. in the center of town, the HOV lane takes off on its own around that mess and comes out on the other side. No having to make sure you're in the correct lane. The first couple of years we tried the bypass - it was an experience in terror with all the trucks and the fact that Atlanta drivers seem to assume that the traffic merging from the on ramps has the right-of-way over the thru traffic. :M As far as all that construction in southern GA, it's a lot better than it was a few years back. Thanks again!! :)

RE: deciding what to do

This will be our 13th season as snowbirds. We started with a 24ft. TT. We used that for a couple of years and then moved to a 26 and finally a 30. The original plan was to try different parks in SW FL. We limited ourselves to that area because we had family living in Pt. Charlotte/Punta Gorda area. We were fortunate in finding a park we really liked in that first year of searching and have been going back there ever since. Until 2 yrs. ago we used our TT as our "rolling FL condo." Then we decided we wanted something a little bigger and bought a park model. But we kept the TT since we still enjoy travelling with the RV. This past summer we put on 4300 miles on a trip thru the West. Spending 3 - 4 months in a 26 - 30 ft. trailer is doable as long as you and the spouse really get along with each other. :) You may want to give that a try and save the park model until you find a place you're really comfortable in and want to make that your "home park."

I-75 Atlanta construction

MS Streets and Trips is telling me that there is construction on southbound I-75 from May, 2011 thru Oct. 2011 near Atlanta. That conjures up images of huge back-ups. :( We're leaving this Friday for FL - any comments about that construction?

RE: Detroit MI to Ft Myers Beach FL

We strongly agree with the I-75 choice. We take that even though the I-77 route would be about 100 miles shorter for us. I-75 has more facilities along the way and is generally a wider, more open road. The hills thru TN are long pulls but pretty straight and have always been clear of snow. I-77 is narrower and curving thru WVa and it's a toll road. Hills are steep and curving enough that there are several run-off ramps for trucks. Two winters ago, friends took I-77 to FL. It began snowing and 18 wheelers began sliding. They ended up sitting in the road with hundreds of other cars for 22 hours! :E Because the road was so narrow there were no shoulders for emergency vehicles to get thru.

RE: Michigan to Florida

We made that trip for several years until we got a park model. But we drove longer so we had only two overnights. We pretty much ignored KOAs, etc. because it was a quick overnight stop and the extra price for amenities was not worth it. AT Berea, KY there is the above mentioned Walnut Creek but it can get quite muddy. Almost across the street is Oh Kentucky - also reasonably priced. At the west end of Knoxville is a Flying J that we regularly stayed at. Not sure if it's still there, but in Ashburn, GA (84 mi. marker) there's a CG associated with a motel - rates were about $10 per night and sites are all pull-thru.

RE: Santa Fe Campground

We stayed at Santa Fe Skies earlier this month. It was the second time we stayed there. Roomy sites, nice view of mountains for both sunrise and sunset, friendly staff. WiFi was great. Not sure why the OP got poor service - they have antennas all over the park so there should be no dead spots. Rancheros de Santa Fe is closer in to town on RT 14 and traffic is more congested by that point. Your scenery is more "city-scape." We strongly recommend Santa Fe Skies!

RE: Utah - Best Route

I like your definition of a bad switchback: " there aren't any switchbacks anywhere that I can remember that are sharp enough to make it necessary to drive out of your lane." Based on some 4x4 trails I rode as a kid, I was thinking that a bad switchback was one that required a three point turn! For a kid in the back of a longwheel base Landrover or pickup that kind of maneuver can be a bit scary. Black Bear Pass above Teluride is the classic example in the USA of this. In one of the Canadian National Parks there's a waterfall access road that requires RVs longer than 21ft to backup one of the legs of switchback (in the style of a few old time railway switchbacks). We watched a full size tour bus on that switchback - it was fun watching the faces of the passengers. :B

RE: Campground around Branson Mo.

We stayed at the city run Lakeside Park. It's right at the end of town and a pretty straight shot in if you're coming down Rt. 65. It is a nice, mostly shady campground and it does have all the amenities - EWS, cable, & free Wifi. It accepts Good Sam and rates are under $30. As we approached the CG our Garmin GPS said it was on the left when, in fact, it was straight ahead.
