RE: Laundry Day!

It seems some details that couldn’t have been forgotten and important to the story were left out of the OP… might have been better to ask the question and leave the story out… First of all I would have expected the 20 something’s to be as considerate as a older person and I have run to very many that are… I have also seen many situation where some of our older people could learn about consideration from some of the younger ones… Just the other day at WM while waiting for the DW to come out of the store… a young man in his 20’s and his family on their way to their car followed shortly by a older woman with a cart full of bags of (I think) potting soil going to her car… the young man returned his cart to the store and while returning to his car stopped offered and loaded all the ladies bags into her car then returned her cart to the store… he also noticed a piece of watermelon that fell on the ground and was left there, picked it up and deposited it in the trash can before returning to his waiting family… We have a lot of promising young people here at the home base CG and I find them encouraging and refreshing… I am more concerned about what us older folks are leaving for them…

RE: Hercules Tires

Maybe I just didn’t see it but I read nothing in the linked article that states the tries are being made in the USA… it says they are headquartered here in Ohio, and marketing tires made by Cooper or a associate company… while I could be wrong, I don’t believe Cooper any longer builds ST tires in the US and they may only build them in a partnered plant today (like Cooper/Kunshan or Cooper /Chengshan)…

RE: Laundry Day!

I spent 20 years using public laundromats. When I finally was able to buy a house and my own laundry equipment, I think I appreciated the W/D more than the house! Now I use public laundry equipment only when I travel. My observations: Most people who use public (not campground) laundries are good decent people. The laundromat is an extension of their home. They don't trash the equipment. They do their laundry just like anyone else, with possibly their worst offense being the heavily scented laundry products that I have to avoid. Some cannot afford their own equipment. Some, especially in small backwoods towns, use the laundromats due to shortage of water at home. You might want to avoid these places on Sundays, when they often seem to be full of ranch hands or sheepherders or heavy equipment operators spending their day off washing their very grubby clothing. My advice: Stay with your laundry. Take a book or a computer toy along to amuse yourself, or chat with the locals. Check the equipment often. Be careful not to melt your clothes in the dryer. Campground laundries, where no one lives there or will even be there tomorrow, are a whole 'nother place. No accountability. Beware. You're lucky that your clothing was only folded wet and not stolen. Wow you description the CG laundry facilities and their users are certainly different than my experiences… I have found the CG facilities are used by a lot of people in the same boat that need and like to use clean machines just as much as the next guy… the biggest problem I have run into is they often don’t clean the lint filter in the drier after use and that only occasionally happens… that just might be because they are used to using public Laundromats where there are no individual lint filters… I use public and CG laundries and prefer the CG to the public… I mostly use the public because the CG facilities might be to crowded…

RE: Laundry Day!

“Besides the obvious of "I should of stayed with my clothes"“ The obvious says it all… folding the clothes damp is no worse than them bunched up in the dryer … While I wouldn’t appreciate someone handling my laundry, I can not expect them to do their laundry based on my schedule either… there was one time when I left while I had clothes in the dryer… I was detained longer than I expected and when I got beck to the Laundromat my close were dry and folded… I would think that because they took the time to fold your clothes they were thoughtful people, and I would have no problem with what they did… many others would have carelessly thrown you clothes in a pile, so the obvious as mentioned would have been the ultimate thoughtful thing to do… If the appliances look clean I don’t think much about sanitizing them… if you have the time and others are not waiting to use them, and it makes you feel better, you could double your time there and run a strong bleach solution through the machine before washing your clothes…

RE: Buying else where

A lot of dealers won’t do warranty work for a local resident that bought out of state, and some that will do it only as fill-in work… I have no problem with this at all, and for the most part they are under no obligation to do the work for you… if you need dealer service use your savings to fill the tank and take the time to return to your dealer for the service… thats one way he keeps his margins up, by pooning your low paying warranty work off on another dealer… this Forest River article best describes this situation from the mfg standpoint… Forest River Encourages You to Buy Locally Forest River, Inc. strongly encourages our retail customers to purchase from their local dealership whenever possible due to the following factors: Our Dealers are as a rule, independently owned and operated businesses. Outside of those customers they personally sold products to, they are not contractually obligated to perform warranty service on Forest River products that were purchased elsewhere. There may be an occasion that you would be required to return to the point of purchase to satisfy warranty requirements. Although many dealerships will eventually service products not purchased at their place of business, they will usually take care of their customers and other Forest River customers who are traveling away from their local dealer as they would their own. Local purchases allow a customer to establish a relationship with a dealer close to home. This relationship provides the customer with a convenient location for service and support from a "home town" professional. The opportunity for a thorough PDI (Pre Delivery Inspection) and product orientation is an additional benefit of buying from your local dealer. Further providing the opportunity for refresher courses or the ability to get questions answered much more conveniently. For our Canadian customers, there are also requirements which must be met to bring an RV purchased out of the country to their home. Although not insurmountable, these requirements may involve such things as additional inspections and certifications, taxes and fees. Your local Canadian Dealer is a professional at meeting these requirements. Forest River's goal is for all RV Owners to fully enjoy their RV experience. In light of this goal, and considering the advantages of buying local, we encourage you to be thorough when determining what product to purchase and which dealer to purchase it from as both are key to your ultimate satisfaction and the realization of your dreams

RE: Camper started 7,600 acre Colorado fire

Accidents do happen and often they are very expensive and costly in other ways to… most are preventable, and with each it can be said they should have been more careful, but that doesn’t make them idiots… Any one of us could face the same unintended situation and consequences… many forest fires began as control burns to prevent out of control fires, and still become out of control… Most of these fires are not started by idiots… Idiots start them on purpose sometimes to make a existing fire bigger, or they start them with a careless disregard for the forest its inhabitants or the safety of many people effected by their actions… they are criminals and should be treated as criminals…

RE: Poor quality construction

I've never understood the fascination with the Amish and their woodworking "skills". Why is it that people consider that members of an 18th century religious cult who eschew technology, public service, and education for their children should be lauded for their woodwork? Watch the documentary "Devil's Playground" some time; it's the story of young Amish who are released from the "faith" during their "Rumpspringa". It follows a group of young Amish in Northern Indiana who drink, party all night and do drugs....then go to work each day at the RV factory. Gee you make them sound a lot like the young German, Irish, Polish, Russian and a few other ethnic people I grew up with… With so many Amish living around here I hear all of the criticisms and prejudice toward them on a regular basis, but at the root of this it seems to be because of their willingness work for less… From what I know of them they will build to what ever level of quality, fit and finish you hire them for, and seem to be quite good at it… but you can bet the price changes with the level of quality to… I don’t understand them myself, but I really don’t need to…

RE: Poor quality construction

Alright, guys and gals. Let me start by saying I have been a custom builder and carpenter for 40 years. Regarding the so-called legendary skills of the Amish carpenters, it's a lot of BS and hype. When I was building homes, they would be hired by the builders because they were the cheapest. Why were they the cheapest? Because they built homes like they build RV's. I'm talking about sticks and staples, and joints that were 1 inch gapped. Yeah, I know, production and speed rules. But these were houses in tornado alley, folks. And the exterior trim was all stapled together, and then the depressions were caulked over with cheap water-based caulk, which would shrink to nothing within a year. To give the Amish credit, there are SOME that are custom woodworkers and do a fine job of building furniture. But the Amish are NOT home builders, nor are they RV builders. Pay the hype forward, if you like, but please get the facts on Amish building before you do.. There is a large Amish population around here and I can tell you from a early age they are taught to build and their construction practices are sometimes different… If you are a builder and hire them because they are cheap, that most likely is reflected in all aspects of your construction process… If you hire them give the proper training, tools and time to build to a quality standard that is what you will get… On the other hand… If you hire them because they will work cheap and have a basic knowledge of construction, offer no instruction on your expectations of the quality of a build level, there is no doubt you will get the kind of construction you have eluded to… The builders responsibility goes far beyond hiring warm bodies to drive nails, and collecting checks… Where was the builder that allowed studs cut a inch short to be used or who stands for and allows for caulking to be used to cover up poor construction… Just what is the builders job if it isn’t hiring the right people to do the job, buying the right materials and tools for completing the job, and insuring that they are correctly used??? The Amish are people no different than you or I, and some have different skill sets like you or I… But it is the builder that bids the job and sells what is supposed to be a quality product… It is the builder that is responsible to see that, that is exactly what happens… It is the builder that has to supervise the job and solve these problems as they come up, deal with employees and the sub contractors… It is the builder that makes the big check because he has so many responsibilities THAT HE MUST MEET… Sorry but you can’t hire cheap, buy cheap materials, set low quality expectations to save time, and call yourself a builder… to blame the lower paid help for merely meeting those expectations is in my opinion REDICULIOUS…

RE: Personal Question $$$

As far as I know I have always had a steady but modest income and I always tried to pay cash and buy new personal vehicles, but I keep my vehicles for a very long time… My 1995 TV was paid for in cash and I still use it… my 1994 car was paid in cash and had it until it was totaled last June… I replaced it with a 2000 and at this stage of my life when it comes time to replace my van it will most likely be used, as I am no longer in need of a TV that will last me another 15 to 20 years… who knows my 95 runs great has a good body and chassis and it may carry me to my last roundup…

RE: Class B+ priced way over NADA

Your bank or credit union may be able to give you the black book values (best source) The 2 books always in a dealership and usually in a bank loan office are the Black Book and the NADA… The "Black Book" is published weekly and is the "Bible" for the ACV (actual cash value) not the "trade-in" value a dealer puts on your car… the RV version I think is published 4 times a year…

RE: Poor quality construction

While the worker usually takes it on the chin for quality issues, these are almost always management issues, or I should say poor management issues… No worker will turn out a quality product if they are not given the 3 T’s… Training, tools, and time to do the job right… Also if attitude in the craft positions is a cause of poor quality, that to can usually be traced to poor management with no or poor people skills… When the bottom line becomes more than important, more than the customer satisfaction, more than the workers well being, there will never be a quality issue, good quality issue I should say… Now lets look at the pay differential for these low grade managers guiding these people known to have good craftsmanship skills… there you will find a giant clue to the apex of the problem…

RE: Should Tire Max Load = Trailer GVWR???

If they would ban ST from the interstates and leave them only for around town utility trailers, 98 percent of the tire threads would disappear. Disappear here, on horse trailer forums, and boat trailer forums. It is just hard to understand why people get stuck with brand new rigs with such low grade tires. They would not allow this to occur on cars or pickups. Must be a lot of profit in them for GY to continue to play in this arena! All the other big guys bailed years ago. You are correct… no other tire has such low DOT certification and testing standards… that’s not to say they couldn’t build a exelent ST tire, it just that they are not required to…

RE: Outdoor Carpet

I can’t imagine anyone want to use ID?OD carpet for camping… it is heavy holds water and dirt like a industrial magnet to iron… takes a long time to dry and is impossible to thoroughly clean, and is a instant grass killer… There are far better choices like mats or shade cloth for this purpose…
