RE: Bearings are Repacked. Spindle Nut Question

It is better to be a half flat loose than a half flat too tight. Never tighten a spindle nut tighter than finger tight after the initial 20 to 50 pound bearing seat.

RE: Question about gooseneck safety chains.

I don't cross the chains. It's tough enough mauneuving inside the bed of the truck when the goosneck is installed. What possible difference could it make anyway? Cross them in front or behind the hitch? Add two more and cross them both in front and behind?

RE: Oil changes - DIESEL ONLY

Shoot, I have a CTD and my "annual oil change" is always about $200!! Annual oil change. :E I remember a couple summers ago doing oil changes three Saturdays in a row. I still have times I change the oil two times in a three or four week period. netomh and Bowhunter, where do you find Dodge dealers with mechanics knowledgeable enough to change oil? I asked about the price of an oil change here if I provided my own Fleetguard Stratopore filter (Dodge only carries the lower quality Fleetguard, with a Mopar brand on it). I was informed they won't install "off brand" filters. I haven't walked up to their service counter since.

RE: AC

I do support my enroute OVERNITEING spot. I buy at wal-Mart, Lowes, Bass Pro, and I eat at the occasional country diner that lets me overnite in their parking lot. Other than the meals do you buy anything you would not have bought anyway? Sounds like what psychologists call compensation. Wouldn't it be fun if all Walmart shoppers camped in the parking lot?

RE: Truck Cap and MPG

Here is a news flash. If mileage (that is cost per mile driven) is a concern to you, DO NOT BUY A CAMPER!!! No matter what, you will get lousy mileage. Buy a Yugo or a Hundai and a tent, or stay in a motel when you travel. If you are worried about the few extra dollars in fuel that one doodad or another might save, or cost, then spending thousands for a room on wheels is a dumb thing to do. Once you have committed to buying an RV, miles per gallon should not be a concern, it costs more money.........get used to it.

RE: AC

There are words that describe people like gunpilot who feels the need to disrespect and denigrate folks who don't fit his tiny window of acceptibility. Yup, but there is only one word to describe people who camp in parking lots.

RE: AC

Just buy a few extension cords and run them to the bldg. If you can't afford $30 or so to go to a campground then a $1000 generator is way out of your reach. Sometimes the decision to stay in a WalMart parking lot is based more on the time of day or the availability of an actual camp site....not on saving money. Ya, sure. Considering the number of RVs I've seen camped out in Flying J and WM parking lots at 5:00 in the evening within 2 miles of RV parks that have empty spaces I say BULL****!

RE: New vehicle buying - RANT

I don't buy new cars anymore. After a day they are "used" so what's the point of sucking up the initial depreciation. I'll bet you can find a "new" car that is one or two model years old that will fill the bill and save you thousands. Even then you are liable to have to pay a doc fee, couldn't get out of it when we bought an '08 for my wife last fall.

RE: Emergency Tow truck options with 5th wheel

Good Sam vows that they will send as many trucks as necessary. For example if you have a truck and travel trailer and the truck has issues. They will send 2 trucks, one for your truck and one for the travel trailer. (if necessary). I imagine others do it also, but don't know. And it is true. A few years ago I managed to drive over some road debris in CO that flattened all three of the tires on the right side of my duelly. Why the trailer tires went unscathed is a mystery. The company GS called sent a flatbed wrecker with a D/A Chevy on the back. The driver unloaded the Chev, we unhooked the 5er, pulled my truck onto the flatbed, then hooked the 5er to the Chev. I drove the Chev 50 some miles to the shop.

RE: Just another GM failure

wondering how the driver survived the million miles of abuse.:) What abuse? We have heat, A/C, satellite radio and a much bigger picture of the world in front of us than the poor suckers who are hunched over a computer moniter or an assy line all day.

RE: Just another GM failure

What I found amusing was all the Diesel Place forum members who didn't believe it. No one on the Dodge forums batted an eye when the first Dodge/Cummins rolled over a million. As for doing it in 10 years.....piece of cake. I am considered a part timer with the transport company I lease to. From Mar 15, 2011 to Feb 20, 2012 I put 94,996 miles on my pickup. That was 160 work days that I logged 90,806. The rest was personnal driving, RV and fishing trips. I would also like to see the list of repairs that were required. There is a near absence of GM pickups in the transporting, hotshotting and car hauling business, but I find the claim plausible. Oh, and for the record, my original engine didn't go the distance of the 887k I now have on my odometer. I pulled it for excessive oil consumption at 790k.

RE: Class 5 hitch

3) what IS a class 5 hitch? It depends on the manufacturer, there is no industry standard. The term "class 3" or "class 4" or "class 5" have no real meaning... This isn't quite accurate... Class 1,2,3&4 Hitch standards are defined by SAE in the SAE J684 Standard. In a nutshell: Class 1: Up to 2000 lbs Class 2: 2000-3500 lbs Class 3: 3500-5000 lbsClass 4: 5000-10000 lbs The standard does not define 'Class 5', but since Class 4 has a maximum of 10,000 lbs most manufactures label their hitches above 10,000 lbs as 'Class 5'. I guess the manufacturers aren't paying much attention to the SAE. Here is a "Class IV" rated for 12,000 WC, 14,000 w/ WD Note it is 2" Hidden Hitch Then there is the Resse, same specs Drawtite Class III/IV Have I made my point? edit; forgot the 2 inch "Class V" LOL

RE: Class 5 hitch

3) what IS a class 5 hitch? It depends on the manufacturer, there is no industry standard. The term "class 3" or "class 4" or "class 5" have no real meaning. As long as the receiver you have is rated at or above the tongue weight and total weight of the trailer you are good to go. Your current hitch may have a rating sticker on it, or the specs might be in your owners manual. I can tell you that I have pulled numerous TTs into BC (commercially), and not once have the inspectors at the weigh stations looked at the ratings of my receiver. I have been checked for operational emergency disconnect braking on the trailer several times last fall however. Apparantly that was (and maybe still is) a focal point of the RCMP.

RE: Looking for Cummins Power tips for build more towing power!

..... find out the lube he put in the Transmission. Should have been CASTROL SYNTEC GL4. To nitpick, the correct fluid is Castrol SYNTORQ. Brewed specifically for the NV4500 for Chrysler and sold by Dodge and GM dealers (they used the NV4500 also). Amsoil makes a substitute, but from experience it does not perform as well as the real thing.

RE: Is it me or the frame?

Bumpy, Not to argue your point. But a point for informational purposes. In order for the fridge to be damaged because of an out of level condition, my pancakes would be running on the floor. It's really a mis-conception that the fridge needs to be EXACTLY level. It just needs to be SOMEWHAT CLOSE to being level. So that large pools of ammonia does not settle in the system, which then prevents circulation. People seem to get hung up on the fridge being level. I believe my manual for my Norcold indicates the fridge needs to be within +/-5 degrees. That is quite a bit of variance. And if my fridge was that far off from my stove being level, I would be leveling those two things up in their cabinets. You beat me to it. Level the stove, everything else will be close enough.

RE: Do I need dual sway control bars???

Two?? You really don't need ONE! The RV industry is making a killing on the myth that "sway control" is needed with a TT.

RE: laws

If you don't have commercial plates DOT doesn't have anything to do with an RV Really?? I do not have commercial plates, but I do display a USDOT number when I am transporting RVs, and I go into most state's weigh stations. Be careful when you post absolutes.
