RE: If you're going solar, do it now.

Back in the winter I picked up the 45 watt HF kit for $149 to use in a class project this summer. Guess it will cost more when they sell the current inventory.

RE: Fuel Issues & Prices - Post 'Em Here!

Yeterday Shell 87 was 3.42 and 93 shell 3.74 locally. Diesel was $3.80 last weekend when we bought 30 gallons for the tractor and the backhoe.

RE: FOR IMMEDIATE ACTION

141 views and only Bob took action? I know a lot of you recreate in Johnson Valley. Get off your butts and do this. If it goes away will you look back and say, "I should have done more"

RE: Freezer works, Fridge dosen't!!!

0 to -10F is the recommended temp for long term indefinite storage, however usually RVers use up what's is thier freezer so I would think anything below freezing would be fine for short term. You just don't want things to thaw.
Keep in mind the normal temp spread between upper/lower boxes is around 35 degrees.
If your freezer is 30F (just below freezing) you will need to be happy with the lower box being 60F and that is not opening the door.
An empty RV frig on max setting for two days that can not acheive at least -5/30F upper/lower are going to lead to sad summer campers south of Canada.

RE: Freezer works, Fridge dosen't!!!

look at flame. make sure its blue.. got a manual? on the net should find one.
freezer should be 0 F to -10F. feel fins inside frig compartment... if freezer works then these should be cool.. part of same system.
Just curious to know if anyone actually gets 0 to -10F in an RV fridge. The coldest ours will get is about 5F and it's usually 10-15F when using it however our fridge side seems to cool very slowly so I'm wondering if the cooling unit is slowly failing.
Based on our Norcold 6162 with a roof vent -10/20+F upper/lower is normal after a couple days on the coldest setting.
Keep in mind many RV refrigerators are in some state of failure and/or suffer from less than ideal installations.
In tests results posted a couple year ago we learned for every three(3)F degree rise in air temps behind the upper part of a frig there is a one (1) rise in inside each box.
If on an 80F day the temp behind the frig is 100 when operating then on a 110F day that temp will be more like 130F.
In this case if at 80F degrees outside the boxes are +10/40F then +20/+50F would be expected on a 110F day.
Many RV frigs hit 50 in the heat of the day if the doors are never opened. Temps can go much higher if the doors are open.

RE: Leaking Exhaust Manifolds

It is a common requirement for the 454 and 460 big blocks.
It can run $1000 +/- $500 but it can knock thousands off the selling price because fewer and fewer want to pay for the fix.
After 18,000 miles and five years we are still fixed it seems.

RE: Replacing Refrigerator Cooling Coils, who's done it?

Decided to replace fridge. Gotta pull a window to get it out!
We decided to just replace the cooling unit so there was no requirement to remove the frig from the MH.

Gale Hawkins...YES it costs more and it's well worth it IMO.

Like they say Quality only cost once but it is upfront.

RE: Tire Question

2005 Fleetwood Discovery
Date Codes 10/05
Always garaged - no sun - no cracks
I would say that the probability of infant mortality (manufacturing defect) on new tires would be about the same as the probability of age related failure of the existing tires. I would keep the old ones. A TPMS for early warning is a good investment no matter what tires you run.
My tire dealer inspected my 7 year old tires using the criteria (sidewall cracks) they use to determine if a casing is retreadable and said they are fine.
Good point about new tire defect odds.

RE: How long for poop to break down?

Hey by using the DG version of Rid-X when you are focused to dump in a dry pit they can not call it untreated waste. :) I am still am against those who dump in a side ditch during a rain storm even if they use something like Rid-X but I understand there is more than one cousin Eddie out there.

RE: Dometic RM 2612, not cooling on either source

I wire 120 volt element to pigtail and plug into 120 frig outlet. In fact when we put in the Amish reman cooling unit I hot wired a second 120 volt element (put it in the barrel for the 12v element) so all I have to do is plug it in to test on AC or run the frig should I have a board or 12vdc failure.
With our Norcold 6162 on max setting is the same as hot wiring in that it runs 24/7/365 but the electronics have be be functional to run on AC.
12 vdc is not for cooling down a hot frig but offers some limited cooling when off the grid or generator to keep boxes chilled.

RE: Blue Grass Pky Kentucky-Restrictions?

Driven both in MH and expect one would have to be well over 14' to be concerned. Both roads are built to Interstate code I am sure. They are limited access.

RE: Bilstein Shocks/Steering Damper

BT CruiserNY I would want more reason but if you have OEM shocks they are getting some age but if they are dry (not leaking) there may be little gain with some few miles on them.

RE: Young family potentially hitting the road soon

Figure out the projected monthly expenses and then make sure you have 3x that times 36 in a FT'ing expense fund.
One may require $5K-$10K at any moment when on the road when things go wrong and it may not even be your fault.
