RE: Would you Wax your RV?

Just finished it, I wax it twice a year for sure and usually do the front and rear before a trip as it makes it easier to clean off the bugs and dirt after trip. I use johnson j wax in the yellow can, usually need 1 1/2 cans to do the job. Was it this type of J wax? Was it this currently marketed version? In one of the current waxing/RMP theads someone mentioned Poli Glow at some point. It seems to be nothing more than a marked up RMP class of finish. One found Red Max Pro #3 superior to Poli Glow at fraction of the cost. Best Poli Glow price seems 1000% more than RMP/Bar Keepers Friend equal size. Some acrylic coating use reviews that may be of interest to some. A before/after photo in thread mirrors our results. BMW mentioned too.

RE: Looking to Purchase 24' Class C Motorhome -- Advice Needed!

In the end I would not over think the decision. The first MH purchase often is going to be part of the learning process. Staying under $20K and going for quality is hard to go wrong for most has long as it can not have a negative impact on your life style should every thing about the purchase go south. In 2007 we bought an OK 1993 MH for $8K. In hindsight buying in at $16K may have been wiser in a technical sense but it was just too great of a financial risk due to family and business cash needs. Since we do must of the repairs ourselves it has been a great home and auto shop class project over the years for the kids. Now at age 14 the kids have skill sets well ahead of most 40 year old people. Had I not been able to fix it or tell shops what/how to fix it the purchase would have been a personal and financial nightmare. They asked for the MH when they were nine and I have insured they did not forget that when it has needed attention. :) Any advice on this subject is certain to come up short because we do not know your complete background/needs/wants. I can tell you once you pull the trigger the 'learning' will start. :) Kind of like the song where at 2 am the guy leaves the bar with a 10 and at 10 am he wakes up with a 2. :B Some how in the emotional process of buying major issues can get over looked. :(

RE: Red Max 3 ??

Go to the Red Max website or read the specs at any of the stores that sell this product. It is a floor finish for INTERIOR floors ONLY. If you want to use it for another purpose, that it was not designed for, then you become the test subject. I would guess that if it was suitable for EXTERIOR paint protection, the manufacturer would want to advertise it as such. Having painted many automobiles, airplanes, and RV's, I would never use it on anything but my floors. They do make specific products to clear coat exterior painted surfaces, designed for each specific type of paint, but the cost is more than what some people would want to pay. Red Max is cheap and worth every penny, for a floor finish. Have you actually tried it? What about all the people (dozens) who have tried it and report good results? I'll wager everyone who has been knocking it in this thread haven't actually tried it. I knocked it until I researched back 10 years of usage on boats then applied it on our stuff. Knockers are non users I bet. :B

We just did a 31 day 8000 mile trip in our paid for MH. The actual cost was over $8000. The troll will collect the toll one way or the other. :B

RE: Looking to make a generator quieter and cleaner output

If cost is your concern and you want these features then go with Honda, etc from the get go.

RE: Would you Wax your RV?

Does Red Max offer any UV protection at all? Jim I know it does on our MH and pick-up truck. They shine so now more is reflected back from the vehicles. Red Max Pro #3 is designed for interior floor use so I does not have an UV blocker added. It seals oxygen from the paint/finish and reflect UV/heat from the surface. Six months later our MH is still shining well and staying clean. When we get it back from the shop I will look to see how the RMP on the roof is holding up. The maker's rep said it may flake off on rubber but would in no way harm the rubber roof. The first was applied by accident when the son was doing the upper sides by laying down on the roof and reaching over edge. He spilt some and it ran across and down the roof. That was why I called the company to see if I needed to remove it. Red Max Pro should make the RV a bit cooler in the summer because of it reflecting some of the UV energy.

RE: Looking to Purchase 24' Class C Motorhome -- Advice Needed!

They can often suck up another $2K+ before it would be ready for a cross country. For a one time trip renting will be cheaper in a $$$ sense.

RE: Charging Car Battery with Honda eu1000i

Start the generator first, so it can come up to speed and be able to take load, then hook up the wires. I'd say that this is probably one of the worst ways to charge a battery, since the 12 volts won't help much, but it is better than nothing. After you get your van going, I recommend buying a "real" charger to have on hand, that can do decent amperage. I have a real charger. I just wanted to run the generator. I'll go use the real charger. Thanks. Actually that is a good way to get some hours on the Honda and do something useful.

RE: Charging Car Battery with Honda eu1000i

I prefer to have any generator up and running before hitting it with a load. If the 12 vdc output it only about 8 amps it could take many hours to get it fully charged but my guess you only want to be able to ge the car started and not to fully charge the battery? If you have a conventional 12 volt battery charge will may charge faster depending on the charger.

RE: Would you Wax your RV?

Gale, "Again I know some were like me in thinking it sounded to good to be true but once I used it then I realized how much money/energy I had wasted trying to use conventional wax and its build up problems." No offense, but don't you think that repeated coats of Red Max will build up on your coach? It does tend to yellow over time and you don't think that repeated build up of coats that are yellowing is a bad thing? What is your plan when those repeated coats of Red Max start to peel? It is NOT just an acrylic clear coat suitable for exterior painted surfaces. Different types of paint require different PAINT products to protect them. I think your last sentence sums it up when you remark about the cost. It is a cheap product and worth every penny as a floor coating. Some may want to use it to make their coach look nice and pawn it off on some unsuspecting buyer. My painting experience tells me that eventually it will start to peel off and at that point in time all of the savings will be lost. I can't even imagine what a paint shop would charge to get this floor finish off of a coach to prepare the surface for a decent paint job. You just wash it off when you want to start over with fresh coats. RMP cleaner is very low cost. I use TSP to clean my hands and tools. It is amazing how little understanding there is about how simple/safe the Red Max Pro class of finishes are to use. One thing that made the prep work hard for us getting ready to apply RMP was removing all of the old wax build up around decals, doors, windows and other catch edges. Did you personally have yellowing when you used Red Max Pro #3? I have not seen that yet even on the white painted metal pick-up truck. I'm sorry. I've painted too many different vehicles(see my profile) to even consider applying an interior floor finish product on anything I own, other than floors. The yellowing was mentioned by one user today on one of the many RedMax topics. I have to assume that he was telling the truth. I find it amazing that anyone could possibly think that they have found the holy grail in painted surface protection in a bottle of floor finish. When anyone of the users receives a letter from the manufacturer saying that it is SAFE to use on the exterior painted surfaces of your RV then I may be more agreeable. Right now, even saying the word SAFE when using a floor finish on an expensive RV is just setting the owner up for what may be a big hit to his wallet. I know that if I were purchasing an RV, and it had RedMax applied to the exterior, I would turn and walk away. It would be a deal killer, which is what I would advise anyone who would consider buying an RV with floor finish on the exterior. It would send up a big red flag about what else the owner had taken care of improperly. Interesting view you have.

RE: Leaking roof

Before you try to reseal the roof, I would be concerned it there was any damage done to the roof deck or support lumber before I tried to reseal roof. If there is water damage, it will never stop progressing even if you seal leak. Due to the way most RV's are made, once you notice a leak, the damage has probably already happened. Eternabond is very good, but if you seal the roof with it, and find out you have to replace any damaged wood below the roof membrane later, your project will be even harder to do. Good point. We actually cut slits in the rubber roof and let a shop vac blow air under the rubber and out an exit slit on the other end for a few days. When the luan got 'crunchy' we knew it was dry then we patched the slits and known holes (where some of the slits were made) with Eternabond. That was in 2008 I think. After all the weak roof areas were reinforced with Web Seal Eternabond we coated everything with Rubber Roof. T

RE: Would you Wax your RV?

Thanks for all the good feedback. seems like the products used for boats such as Collinite and also the Nu Finish could work well. However, some suggested Red Max, I see there is even another post about Red Max right now? Is Red Max really for older units showing signeds of fading already? My unit is new and still looks good, trying to keep it that way. Should I rather go with Collinite or similar? Yes? No? Thanks for the help so far, seems like many has been there and done that before :=) Red Max is a floor finish product, not a paint restoration/protection product. Some people choose to use it on their motor homes exterior. And interiors. It works good on no wax floors that are no longer shining. Made our kitchen/bath look new like again after 20 years of use. It is also a slip resistent acrylic coating as a plus. Basically it is just an acrylic clear coat that can be applied, removed and reapplied with almost NO effort. It prevent rain, dirt, streaks, bugs, etc from ever reaching the finish of the MH, car, tractor, backhoe, dozer, bush hog, box blade, truck or any other item that sets outside. It seems best to be recoated every year but some reports it lasting for 2-3 years on RV's and boats. We did the rubber roof after our cross country last fall. I will check that out when we get it back from the shop where it has been parked waiting for a new parking brake cable. Red Max Pro #3 / Zep Wet Look #3 again is just better than any wax/polish I have used and goes on with no real physical effort and out last any wax I have used. While I do understand some like to brag about the pain they endure in the waxing process but I am turning 61 with major physical limitations so brute effort for limited results did not cut it in our case. The 1993 MH was dull and the decals even duller. :B I just looked out at the 1980 F100 PU that we used Red Max Pro on last fall and it is beading water like a new wax job. Again I know some were like me in thinking it sounded to good to be true but once I used it then I realized how much money/energy I had wasted trying to use conventional wax and its build up problems. One does need to let it dry for 30+ minutes between coats and I like it to be 70F or warmer. Cooler temps just extends drying time between coats. The actual Red Max Pro #3 cost for 6 coats on our 33' motor home was $16.77 plus tax.

RE: Bad experience with Seafoaming a generator...

I would not mix Sea Foam greater than 2oz per gallon of gas (as stated directly on the can) for any engine under load. If you are going to run super heavy mix like 16 oz in one gallon of gas for fast cleaning of a dirty fuel system do it with no load on the gen set. There is really no way Sea Foam can hurt an engine when used as per instructions printed on the can that we have found and we buy it by the gallon.
