RE: Going from Colorado Springs to Los Vegas

Come on, what city has more historic buildings than a castle, a pyramid, the Eiffel tower, a Caesers palace, a Treasure Island, a Mirage, most of Manhattan? That and more all within about 3 miles and the admission is free. What you choose to invest is up to you. Enjoy the trip as either interstate route is wide and easy to follow.

RE: Carroll Shelby Cobra creator passes.

I had one brush with The Man in early 1962. my buddy and I stopped at Dean Moon's Mooneyes shop in Santa Fe Springs for some parts. Out back was this small unassuming bare aluminum roadster, unfinished interior, skinny wire wheels but with a 2 barrel Ford V8 stuffed in it. It was the first mule Shelby Cobra with a 260CI motor in it to just to try and make everything fit into this little jelly bean, hop toad English sporty car. Ol' Shel had virtually no budget for the project and the first corporate Ford 289 motors had yet to arrive. Here was Carroll in his hat and two mechanics trying to figure out how and where to install the metal rod used to hold the hood open but without success as there was little room in there. About this time Dean Moon walked over with the biggest box end wrench I had ever seen and grabbed the rod. He made two large bends to the rod which then fit around the cylinder heads, problem solved. As drag racers we barely knew who Shelby was other than an old sporty car driver from Europe and that this little project looked pretty rough. I enjoyed following his car building and racing the differend Cobras, Daytona Coupe, GT350R Mustangs and Ford GT40's over the years. He is a man with many lives who will be missed.

RE: I just bought a new car

Have fun with the little V6. I thought I read where it is rated at 300HP and 30MPG highway. If I remember through the fog of time the original '65 High Perfomance 289 V8 was rated at 271HP and anything over 12MPG was considered good. Your base Mustang may not have the ego envolvement of the first ones but it does everything better, goes, stops, turns, doesn't need the solid lifters adjusted frequently or points, plugs and condencer changed at short intervals. I still love that white '65 HiPo fastback that went away long ago.

RE: CoachNet

Funny, but CN provided a flatbed for the family van at 7PM from the first rest area in CA south of Las Vegas 26 miles to State Line where rooms were available. CN told me to call them first thing in the morning so the van could be taken to a Ford dealer in Las Vegas 35 miles away. The van was taken on a flatbed twice over 12 hours to have a wheel bearing replaced. There was no charge for the service, good people.

RE: food and fun in Seattle

Call the restaurant at the top of the Space Needle. The ride to the top is free if you eat there and it takes about an hour to make the 360 degree circle. Bring lots on money as soup at lunch is $9.00 and the main course $23-35.00 but the view cannot be beat. Also check out the public transportation available on line including the light rail which runs to the Space Needle and all the way South to the airport.

RE: Highway 395 North

You will enjoy the road but keep an eye out for late season snow, even as late as June. It usually does not last long and there are lots of crews available to keep things moving but do not be surprised if you need to delay a day or so until everything is cleared. Nothing to fear but be aware of the possibility.

RE: Transmission Gauge 33ds

That gage was a question on my first stop at the Chevy truck place with my '06 Seneca. I was assured it was working but the truck was not working hard enough to bring the needle off the peg. I have actually seen it move a little going up the grapevine South on the 5 when the temperature was in the high 90's and I had the car behind me on a caddy. These are commercial class 5 trucks most of us drive like the cars we own and take care of ourselves and not ridden hard and put away wet like the tow trucks and delivery vehicles the were designed to be. That is why I went with this size vehicle.

RE: How do they get to 1M?

Most of the people with similar rigs I have bumped into on our travels are friendly and use them much the way we use our Super C. The rig is a mobile condo we move from place to place so we can go, do and enjoy the surrounding area both day and night. We spend little time sitting outside as we are away most of the time and only cook something good on the RVQ to be eaten inside with all of the comforts of home. Where we stop is not the destination or our source for entertainment. As for the people in the high dollar rigs they wave and say hello just like most others we have seen on the road, no different.

RE: Pachingo Casino, Temecula,CA

The overflow parking area south of the gas station is designated for RV parking. The portion closest to the RV park is signed No RV parking. We have used the overflow area overnight when arriving early for a poker tournament and then check into the RV park later in the afternoon. I have seen rigs parked in the overflow area for the entire 3 days we were in the park. The free casino shuttle will pick you up from back there just like anywhere else. The lot is patrolled 24 hours by the tribal police and they are friendly. Enjoy the casino and the wine country.

RE: Sides or not

If no slides were available then there would be no RV. The RV is our home away from home with all of the conveniences we have at home and no compromises or multiuse areas. We don’t camp we RV. Since I am able to work from anywhere there is a web/phone connection the rig must feel like a home with enough room so that after 8 hours I do not have a closed in feeling.

RE: New 32" for the old 27" TV

On the Seneca Super C side the wood cabinet surrounding the old 27" used in the entertainment center version of the overhead is just over 31" wide and 26" high. The 32" LCD with front speakers just happens to measure 31.5" wide and 23" high. A heavy plywood backing sized to fit the mounting holes on the back of the set and a couple of braces made a nice fit as if it were made for the space. Also the new set receives digital channels through the old crank up antenna with no other changes needed. I am happy. The old 80lb set is now ready for a garage sale.

RE: Broken refrigerator door hinge

We had to replace the door twice under warranty on our Seneca. They used some very heavy, thick solid hardwood inserts which look nice but add nothing to the usefulness of the appliance. I found some light, thin gloss black inserts from Norcold in an RV supply catalog which match the black oven and microwave. Slide out the wood and in with the black and save more weight than any food/drinks you can load into the door. No problem with the door now in 4 years.

RE: I 5 to Petaluma, California

The beauty of the Lakeville Rd route is that you do not join thousands of new friends sitting in stop and go traffic on the 101 when they go home after work. The 101 North is reduced to 2 lanes between where 37 joins and Petaluma so it is not the place to be on a Friday at 5pm which we were last June.

RE: A question for the NASCAR knowledgeable

Great, thanks for the information and insight into the big business backing that it takes to run a NASCAR team. I am sure my wife will now appreciate how much cheaper it is for me to go to an occasional race than to own a team.

RE: A question for the NASCAR knowledgeable

Just for jollies the American made Hyundai Equus and Genesis are rear drive, V8 powered with 429hp. The Impala, Focus and Camry pretend names on the NASCAR clone bodies do not appear to come close to the race car's configuration. Come on guys, a little truth in advertising here. Your trucks are all big hairy chested V8's. The Mustang, Camero and Challenger are all available with more than 400hp motors but the NASCAR named street cars are wimps. I watch for the competition and entertainment value and appreciate the teamwork and dedication required to function at the highest levels. I have no ego envolvement in the big names who own the teams or who is behind the wheel. Just make noise, go fast and give me a good show when I go to Sonoma, Kansas City and Las Vegas. The question remains, what do the factories pay to have their brand name on the front of the cars who only finish in the lower third of the field?

A question for the NASCAR knowledgeable

I have an interest in anything that makes noise and goes fast, boats, bikes, planes, cars and have watched NASCAR in person since the early 60’s. Not since the late 60’s early 70’s when race cars were somewhat based on production vehicles have the brands Ford, Chevy, Dodge, Pontiac, Plymouth or Mercury had any meaning. What I would like to know is, what is the factory involvement behind the brand name painted on the front of the car? If I took $10 million or so from my lottery winnings and wanted to put together a back of the pack Sprint cup team I could go to the same parts bins and buy the same components, tube frame, suspension, engine and approved generic body shape as all others on the starting grid. So I line up a primary sponsor to go with a killer paint scheme but now, who pays me and how much and what name do I paint on the front? In addition to Toyota I think Kia, Honda, VW and Hyundai all assemble cars in the US which should qualify them for NASCAR consideration. I can just hear Mike Joy announcing, “And the Hyundai sweeps by to take the lead at the white flag with one lap to go at Darlington”. Again, NASCAR would not allow me to run a Parts Bin Brand car so what is the price of the nameplate and who writes me the check?

RE: Penske Racing going to Fords in '13

Not since the late 60’s early 70’s when the race cars were based on production vehicles have the brands Ford, Chevy, Dodge, Pontiac, Plymouth or Mecury had any meaning. What I would like to know is what is the factory involvement behind the painted on name on the front of the car? If I had $10 million or so to put together a Sprint cup team I could go out and buy all of the same components, tube frame, suspension, engine and approved generic body shape as all others on the starting grid. Now, who pays me and how much to put their manufacturers logo on the front? I don’t think Toyota, Ford or Chevy make a similar V8 powered, rear drive vehicle as seen on the track but come to think of it Hyundai has a couple of 400HP street cars of that configuration. Maybe if I went to Hyundai they may have a few dollars to spare and want to thumb their noses at the others in NASCAR. I’m sorry, that should read compete on even terms with the other teams which would probably tick off a few of the loyal fans in the stands. I can just hear Mike Joy announcing, “And the Hyundai sweeps by to take the lead at the white flag with one lap to go at Darlington”. Again, what is the price of the nameplate?

RE: outdoor recliner

When we got the rig I got one LaFuma because she liked it. That was followed by a $50.00 special the looked similar from a sporting goods store. There are also 3 or 4 assorted other chairs which make the trips. Upon setup the chairs come out and the one first taken by the dog is the LaFuma, always. They are not light or cheap but we don't backpack with them and after almost 6 years I have only bought it once. Try them all and get what you like.

RE: How fast do you drive on highways in your class C?

In CA when towing I join the commercial traffic at 60-65 when outside of populated areas. I may have all day to play in the slow lane but I wanted a rig which would not work hard at truck speeds in consideration of the people who earn their living on the road. And yes, everyone knows about the split 55/65-70 speed limits in CA. In AZ and NM it is 70 where the limit is 70 as there is no CA CHP fudge factor practiced there. Then maybe a little more when the limit is 75. The Seneca is comfortable at that speed and with 80 gal of diesel available I enjoy spending them frivolously.

Great, good to hear you are doing everything you can and making the most of what is now available. Perhaps others will learn and benefit from what we have found out. You can't enjoy the RV experience without decent health. See you on the road.
